Book excerpt: Excerpt from At Home and Abroad: Or Things and Thoughts in America and Europe There are at least three classes of persons who travel in our own land and abroad. The first and largest in number consists of those who, "having eyes, see not, and ears, hear not," anything which is profitable to be remembered. Crossing lake and ocean, passing over the broad prairies of the New World or the classic fields of the Old, though they look on the virgin soil sown thickly with flowers by the hand of God, or on scenes memorable in man's history, they gaze heedlessly, and when they return home can but tell us what they ate and drank, and where slept, - no more; for this and matters of like import are all for which they have cared in their wanderings. Those composing the second class travel more intelligently. They visit scrupulously all places which are noted either as the homes of literature, the abodes of Art, or made classic by the pens of ancient genius. Accurately do they mark the distance of one famed city from another, the size and general appearance of each; they see as many as possible of celebrated pictures and works of art, and mark carefully dimensions, age, and all details concerning them. Book The American Republic

Download or read book The American Republic written by Bruce Frohnen and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many reference works offer compilations of critical documents covering individual liberty, local autonomy, constitutional order, and other issues that helped to shape the American political tradition. Yet few of those works are available in a form suitable for classroom use, and traditional textbooks give short shrift to these important issues. The American Republic overcomes that knowledge gap by providing, in a single volume, critical, original documents revealing the character of American discourse on the nature and importance of local government, the purposes of federal union, and the role of religion and tradition in forming America’s drive for liberty. The American Republic is divided into nine sections, each illustrating major philosophical, cultural, and policy positions at issue during crucial eras of American development. Readers will find documentary evidence of the purposes behind European settlement, American response to English acts, the pervasive role of religion in early American public life, and perspectives in the debate over independence. Subsequent chapters examine the roots of American constitutionalism, Federalist and Anti-Federalist arguments concerning the need to protect common law rights, and the debates over whether the states or the federal government held final authority in determining the course of public policy in America. Also included are the discussions regarding disagreements over internal improvements and other federal measures aimed at binding the nation, particularly in the area of commerce. The final section focuses on the political, cultural, and legal issues leading to the Civil War. Arguments and attempted compromises regarding slavery, along with laws that helped shape slavery, are highlighted. The volume ends with the prelude to the Civil War, a natural stopping-off point for studies of early American history. By bringing together key original documents and other writings that explain cultural, religious, and historical concerns, this volume gives students, teachers, and general readers an effective way to begin examining the diversity of issues and influences that characterize American history. The result unquestionably leads to a deeper and more thorough understanding of America's political, institutional, and cultural continuity and change. Bruce P. Frohnen is Associate Professor of Law at Ohio Northern University College of Law. He holds a J.D. from the Emory University School of Law and a Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.

Book excerpt: This book is an examination of national identity in a crucial period. The United States first announced its power on the international scene at the Centennial Exhibition in 1876 and first demonstrated that power during World War I. The years in between were a period of dramatic change, when the dynamics of industrialization rapidly accelerated the rate at which Americans were coming in contact with foreign peoples, both at home and abroad. In this work, the author shows how American conceptions of peoplehood, citizenship, and national identity were transformed in these crucial years by escalating economic and military involvements abroad and by the massive influx of immigrants at home. Drawing upon a diverse range of sources, not only traditional political documents, but also novels, travelogues, academic treatises, and art, he demonstrates the close relationship between immigration and expansionism. By bridging these two areas, so often left separate, he rethinks the texture of American political life in a keenly argued and persuasive history. This book shows how these years set the stage for today's attitudes and ideas about "Americanism" and about immigrants and foreign policy, from Border Watch to the Gulf War.

Book Art and Beauty in the Heartland

Download or read book Art and Beauty in the Heartland written by Jan Stilson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919 eight Chicago White Sox ballplayers teamed up with gamblers to throw the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. The eight players were banned for life from organized baseball for their involvement in or knowledge of the fix, and because of the scandal the players came to be known as the "Black Sox". One of the "Black Sox" was Charles "Swede" Risberg. Swede Risberg came to Minnesota in 1922 with a team called the Mesaba Range Black Sox and he went on to play for Rochester Minnesota in 1923, 1924 and 1926. Swede also played for Scobey Montana in 1925, Watertown South Dakota in 1926 and 1927, Virden Manitoba Canada in 1929, Jamestown North Dakota in 1929 and 1930, and Sioux Falls South Dakota in 1931 and 1932. This book documents the career of Swede Risberg in semi-professional baseball from June 1922 through the 1932 season with the Sioux Falls Canaries. Although this book presents detailed statistical information on Swede's post White Sox career in semi-professional baseball, the book goes beyond a dry accounting of innings pitched, at bats, and hits. Swede played against many different teams and many different individuals. Some of these teams and individuals are themselves interesting stories. Swede would never have played in games against teams with only African-American players or against integrated teams if he had remained in professional baseball, and Swede would not have played on integrated teams if he had remained in the major leagues. Unfortunately, some of the detail about Swede's career in semi-professional baseball is lost forever as newspaper summaries were sometimes not complete, negatives of pictures have been destroyed, and the people that played the games are gone. Even with these limitations, I hope that you enjoy the story of Swede Risberg's life in semi-professional baseball.
