Book excerpt: Sarah Margaret nee Fuller Ossoli (1810-1850) was a journalist, critic and women's rights activist. She was the first full-time female book reviewer in journalism, becoming the first editor of the Transcendental publication The Dial in 1840 before joining the staff of the New York Tribune in 1844. She was sent to Europe in 1846 by the Tribune, specifically England and Italy, as its first female foreign correspondent. Her book Woman in the Nineteenth Century (1845) is considered the first major feminist work in the United States. It began as an essay, The Great Lawsuit, written in serial form for The Dial. Ossoli was an advocate of women's rights and, in particular, women's education and the right to employment. She also encouraged many other reforms in society, including prison reform and the emancipation of slaves in the United States. Soon after her death, many of her writings were collected and published. In 1852, Memoirs of Margaret Fuller Ossoli was published, though much of the work was censored or reworded. Her brother Arthur also later published At Home and Abroad (1856) and Life Without and Life Within (1858).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from At Home and Abroad: Or Things and Thoughts in America and Europe There are at least three classes of persons who travel in our own land and abroad. The first and largest in number consists of those who, "having eyes, see not, and ears, hear not," anything which is profitable to be remembered. Crossing lake and ocean, passing over the broad prairies of the New World or the classic fields of the Old, though they look on the virgin soil sown thickly with flowers by the hand of God, or on scenes memorable in man's history, they gaze heedlessly, and when they return home can but tell us what they ate and drank, and where slept, - no more; for this and matters of like import are all for which they have cared in their wanderings. Those composing the second class travel more intelligently. They visit scrupulously all places which are noted either as the homes of literature, the abodes of Art, or made classic by the pens of ancient genius. Accurately do they mark the distance of one famed city from another, the size and general appearance of each; they see as many as possible of celebrated pictures and works of art, and mark carefully dimensions, age, and all details concerning them. Book excerpt: "A significant new voice in fiction, Norris has written what may be one of the defining novels of the era at the intersection between Black Lives Matter and COVID-19." --BuzzFeed One of Publishers Weekly's Best Novels of the Summer ∙ One of The Millions' Most Anticipated Books of June ∙ One of ALTA's Recommended Reads for June ∙ One of BuzzFeed's Amazing Small Press Books To Add To Your Summer Reading List Copeland Cane V, the child who fell outta Colored People Time and into America, is a fugitive... He is also just a regular teenager coming up in a terrifying world. A slightly eccentric, flip-phone loving kid with analog tendencies and a sideline hustling sneakers, the boundaries of Copeland's life are demarcated from the jump by urban toxicity, an educational apparatus with confounding intentions, and a police state that has merged with media conglomerates--the highly-rated Insurgency Alert Desk that surveils and harasses his neighborhood in the name of anti-terrorism. Recruited by the nearby private school even as he and his folks face eviction, Copeland is doing his damnedest to do right by himself, for himself. And yet the forces at play entrap him in a reality that chews up his past and obscures his future. Copeland's wry awareness of the absurd keeps life passable, as do his friends and their surprising array of survival skills. And yet in the aftermath of a protest rally against police violence, everything changes, and Copeland finds himself caught in the flood of history. Set in East Oakland, California in a very near future, The Confession of Copeland Cane introduces us to a prescient and contemporary voice, one whose take on coming of age in America becomes a startling reflection of our present moment.
