Download or read book Sanctuary and Asylum written by Linda Rabben and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of sanctuary—giving refuge to the threatened, vulnerable stranger—may be universal among humans. From primate populations to ancient religious traditions to the modern legal institution of asylum, anthropologist Linda Rabben explores the long history of sanctuary and analyzes modern asylum policies in North America, Europe, and elsewhere, contrasting them with the role that courageous individuals and organizations have played in offering refuge to survivors of torture, persecution, and discrimination. Rabben gives close attention to the mid-2010s refugee crisis in Europe and to Central Americans seeking asylum in the United States. This wide-ranging, timely, and carefully documented account draws on Rabben’s experiences as a human rights advocate as well as her training as an anthropologist. Sanctuary and Asylum will help citizens, professionals, and policy makers take informed and compassionate action. A Capell Family Book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idealistic school teacher Ellen is bowled over by news that many of the survivors of the shipwrecked Golden Venture, run aground off the coast of New York in 1993, will be detained in her local York County Prison in York, PA. Upon attending vigils on behalf of these INS detainees now seeking political asylum, she becomes enthralled with the group of humanitarians she meets as well as with the cause of justice and freedom for the world's oppressed and downtrodden. On the other hand, her husband Dan is not the least enthralled with her involvement in this cause of "cutting illegals a break." Major problems develop on the home front, all the more so as their daughter Christi becomes drawn into the cause. Little does Ellen or the INS realize until the very end, but the detainee to whom Ellen has been assigned as his "Guardian Angel" is none other than the 20th century's most famous freedom icon: Tankman, the man who stood up to the tanks at Tiananmen Square. Tankman in America encapsulates the tragedies, both personal and national, that have been and are the result of America's often misguided treatment of people seeking asylum from this world's many oppressive regimes. Tankman in America is a story of great heroism, nobility, anguish, tragedy and joy. It is a thought-provoking, heart-breaking, inspiring and powerful story about the course of freedom in America.

Download or read book Refugee Protection and the Role of Law written by Susan Kneebone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixty years on from the signing of the Refugee Convention, forced migration and refugee movements continue to raise global concerns for hosting states and regions, for countries of origin, for humanitarian organisations on the ground, and, of course, for the refugee. This edited volume is framed around two themes which go to the core of contemporary ‘refugeehood’: protection and identity. It analyses how the issue of refugee identity is shaped by and responds to the legal regime of refugee protection in contemporary times. The book investigates the premise that there is a narrowing of protection space in many countries and many highly visible incidents of refoulement. It argues that ‘Protection’, which is a core focus of the Refugee Convention, appears to be under threat, as there are many gaps and inconsistencies in practice. Contributors to the volume, who include Erika Feller, Elspeth Guild, Hélène Lambert and Roger Zetter, look at the relevant issues from the perspective of a number of different disciplines including law, politics, sociology, and anthropology. The chapters examine the link between identity and protection as a basis for understanding how the Refugee Convention has been and is being applied in policy and practice. The situation in a number of jurisdictions and regions in Europe, North America, South East Asia, Africa and the Middle East is explored in order to ask the question does jurisprudence under the Refugee Convention need better coordination and how successful is oversight of the Convention?
