Book excerpt: Astrophel And Other Poems This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astrophel Stella: Wherein the Excellence of Sweet Poesy Is Concluded ON the morning of Thursday, September 22, 1586, a body of two hundred English horsemen, with Sir Philip Sidney at their head, advanced, in the midst of a thick mist, to attack a Spanish convoy on its way to the town of zutphen. As Sidney left the camp he had met its Marshal, Sir William Pelham, clad only in light armour, and, with the emulation of a knight errant had thrown aside his own cuisses, that he might be no better protected. Now the fog lifted, and the little force found itself under the very walls of Zutphen, and confronted by the enemy's cavalry, a thousand strong. Twice the English charged, and only retreated after hard fighting, during which Sidney's horse was killed under him. Reinforced from the camp, a third time they hurled themselves against the Spanish troops, once more to be forced to retire, after having slain almost their own number of the enemy. Book The Stella Poems

Download or read book The Stella Poems written by Duane Locke and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Still writing well beyond his 96th year, Duane Locke's most recent collection, THE STELLA POEMS, invites the reader to accompany him through a thoughtful though sad journey across the landscape of our current trends and the reactions these trends have on our relationships not only with other human beings but with the wide-open natural world as well. As always, there is an impeccable imagery when our poet guides us through this natural world and we see for the first time what was right in front of us had we only opened our eyes. Which is also why we can always expect to be amazed. Though a twist on Sir Philip Sydney's Astrophel & Stella, Locke's ability to make contemporary the kind of love it takes to exist in this world is, as usual, exceptional.

Apart from her memor able association with Sir Philip in regard to the latter's famous pastoral romance, and to their joint authorship of a metrical version of the Psalter apart, moreover, from the loveliness of her own character, Mary Sidney merits grateful recognition and remem brance as a bountiful and disinterested patroness of poets - among whom was the writer represented in the concluding section of this booklet - and as, in point of time, the first English authoress of repute. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Satin Bow, and Other Poems A Satin Bow. A little shining satin bow From off my lady's wedding-gown, Where, 'mid the folds like driven snow, You held some fractious ruffle down! I saw thee not that happy day, - I only saw a mist of white, My darling's eyes, an orange spray, - And felt my heart throb with delight. But somehow, somewhere, thou didst hold High carnival for one glad hour. Now, limp and yellow, crushed and old, Bereft of all adorning power. Your mistress dropped you on the floor, And at my feet you idly lay: - "My love, some trash I'll keep no more; I wore it on my wedding day." The little woman, you must know, Could make no use of such a thing. Most of her ribbons long ago Made baby's sash or bonnet string. And so, she threw you quite away, Poor victim of her happy pride! She wore you on her wedding day, - A gleeful, girlish, bonny bride! They tell me she is faded, too, Is growing thin, and worn, and wan; But gazing in those eyes so true, I dare you prove it if you can. Book A C Swinburne and the Singing Word

Download or read book A C Swinburne and the Singing Word written by Yisrael Levin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Algernon Charles Swinburne's later writings, this collection makes a case for the seriousness and significance of the writer's mature work. While Swinburne's scandalous early poetry has received considerable critical attention, the thoughtful, rich, spiritually and politically informed poetry that began to emerge in his thirties has been generally neglected. This volume addresses the need for a fuller understanding of Swinburne's career that includes his fiction, aesthetic ideology, and analyses of Shakespeare and the great French writers. Among the key features of the collection is the contextualizing of Swinburne's work in new contexts such as Victorian mythography, continental aestheticism, positivism, and empiricism. Individual essays examine, among other topics, the dialect poems and Swinburne's position as a regional poet, Swinburne as a transition figure from nineteenth-century aesthetic writing to the professionalized criticism that dominates the twentieth century, Swinburne's participation in the French literary scene, Swinburne's friendships with women writers, and the selections made for anthologies from the nineteenth century to the present. Taken together, the essays offer scholars a richer portrait of Swinburne's importance as a poet, critic, and fiction writer.
