Book Protostellar Jets in Context

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kanaris Tsinganos
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-09-24
  • ISBN : 3642005764
  • Pages : 662 pages

Download or read book Protostellar Jets in Context written by Kanaris Tsinganos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is over a quarter of a century since the discovery of out?ows from young stars. The intervening years have led to remarkable advances in our understanding of this phenomenon. Much of the progress can be attributed to advances in facilities and technologies, including not only larger telescopes but also improved instrument and detector performance. In addition protostellar out?ows have now been imaged from the ground and space at high spatial resolution, e. g. with HST, and at a wide - riety of wavelengths from X-rays to radio waves, revealing more and more about their physics. This veritable revolution in observation has been accompanied by an exponential growth in our ability to numerically simulate the launching and pro- gation of jets. Codes continue to improve: they now incorporate more physics and are increasingly ef?cient through, for example, techniques such as adaptive mesh re?nement and the use of parallel processing in cluster environments. Simulating the launching and propagation of a jet all the way from the vicinity of the star up to 4 several thousand AU (a size range of10 ) is now much closer. In more recent times, developments in observation, theory and numerical s- ulation have been joined by laboratory jet experiments reproducing, on centimetre scales, that which is seen in astrophysics to stretch for several parsecs.

Book Light Elements in the Universe IAU S268

Download or read book Light Elements in the Universe IAU S268 written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-13 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 268 presents an overview of the most recent observational and theoretical research on the formation and evolution of light elements in the Universe: H, He, Li, Be, B, and their isotopes. Astrophysicists from a variety of subfields discuss recent developments that will improve our understanding of the light elements and provide important clues to stellar and galactic evolution, Big Bang nucleosynthesis, and cosmology. Striking observational progress has been achieved recently through the advent of next generation ground- and space-based telescopes, such as the cosmic microwave background experiments that allow the accurate determination of the baryon density of the Universe. New theoretical breakthroughs in describing stellar interiors and the chemical evolution of complex systems and the remaining challenges in this field are also addressed. This critical review is a useful resource for all those interested in the chemical evolution of the Universe.

Book Transactions of the International Astronomical Union

Download or read book Transactions of the International Astronomical Union written by Derek McNally and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The XXth General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union was held in Baltimore, Maryland USA from August 02 to 11, 1988. The Inaugural Ceremony on August 02 was held in the presence of representatives of the United States Governn:ent, t~e S~ate of Maryland, the City of Baltimore and the host institution -the Johns Hopkins Umverslty- as well as of the National and Local Organising Committees. The scientific programme maintained the high standards of the Union and the scientific proceedings may be found either in this volume or in volume 8 of Highlights of Astronomy. The scientific programme was organised by the 40 Commission Presidents and coordinated by the General Secretary (1985-1988), Dr. J.-P. Swings. The local arrangements were effectively made through the National Organising Committee under the Chairmanship of Prof. F. Drake and the Local Organising Committee under the co-Chairmanship of Prof. A. Oavidsen and Dr. R. Giacconi. The smooth day to day operation of the meeting resulted from the incomparable dedication of Karen Weinstock and Harold Screen.

Book Formation and Evolution of Low Mass Stars

Download or read book Formation and Evolution of Low Mass Stars written by A.K. Dupree and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Insti tute on Formation and Evolution of Low Mass Stars held from 21 September to 2 October 1987 at Viana do Castelo, Portugal. Holding the meeting in Portugal recognized both the historical aspects and the bright future of astronomy in Portugal. In the early sixteenth century, the Portugese played an important role in the critical diffusion of classical and medieval knowledge which formed so large a part of scientific activity at that time. Navigation and course setting, brought to a high level by Portugese explorers, relied on mathematics and astronomy to produce precise tables of solar positions. In contemporary Portu gal, astronomy is the focus of renewed interest and support at the universities. It is thus particularly appropriate that the NATO Advanced Study Institute was held on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the friendly surroundings of the Costa Verde.
