Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume of the ASP Conference Series contains presentations that were given at the 17th annual conference on Astronomical Data Analysis Software and Systems (ADASS XVII), which was held on 23-26 September 2007 at the Kensington Town Hall, London, UK. A number of key topics are chosen by the Programme Organising Committe each year for special emphasis according to their timeliness and to aid in the selection of invited speakers. This year these included Data Preservation, Footprints and Mosaics, High Energy Physics Computing, Algorithms and Image Processing, and Data Mining and Visualisation. The Programme of oral presentations consisted of 13 invited speakers with another 38 speakers contributing smaller talks. The programme also contained a set of more than 150 informal presentations in the form of posters. The standard format of ADASS also includes a number of less structured yearly events which focus on topics of special interest. The first of these are the large group Birds of a Feather discussion sessions. Four of these took place in the late afternoon or early evening after the day's oral programme. Three Focus Demonstrations allowed speakers to display new software and facilities to a large audience, while fourteen Floor Demonstrations addressed very small groups. It has become tradition within ADASS to use the Sunday before the formal beginning of the conference as something of a training day. This year we were fortunate enough to have two very high quality tutorial sessions on the subjects of 3D Visualisation and Data Mining."--Publisher's website.

Book Future Professional Communication in Astronomy II

Download or read book Future Professional Communication in Astronomy II written by Alberto Accomazzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume gathers together the talks presented at the second colloquim on the Future Professional Communication in Astronomy (FPCA II), held at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) on 13-14 April 2010. This meeting provided a forum for editors, publishers, scientists, librarians and officers of learned societies to discuss the future of the field. The program included talks from leading researchers and practitioners and drew a crowd of approximately 50 attendees from 10 countries. These proceedings contain contributions from invited and contributed talks from leaders in the field, touching on a number of topics. Among them: - The role of disciplinary repositories such as ADS and arXiv in astronomy and the physical sciences; - Current status and future of Open Access Publishing models and their impact on astronomy and astrophysics publishing; - Emerging trends in scientific article publishing: semantic annotations, multimedia content, links to data products hosted by astrophysics archives; - Novel approaches to the evaluation of facilities and projects based on bibliometric indicators; - Impact of Government mandates, Privacy laws, and Intellectual Property Rights on the evolving digital publishing environment in astronomy; - Communicating astronomy to the public: the experience of the International Year of Astronomy 2009.

Book Astronomical Image and Data Analysis

Download or read book Astronomical Image and Data Analysis written by J.-L. Starck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With information and scale as central themes, this comprehensive survey explains how to handle real problems in astronomical data analysis using a modern arsenal of powerful techniques. It treats those innovative methods of image, signal, and data processing that are proving to be both effective and widely relevant. The authors are leaders in this rapidly developing field and draw upon decades of experience. They have been playing leading roles in international projects such as the Virtual Observatory and the Grid. The book addresses not only students and professional astronomers and astrophysicists, but also serious amateur astronomers and specialists in earth observation, medical imaging, and data mining. The coverage includes chapters or appendices on: detection and filtering; image compression; multichannel, multiscale, and catalog data analytical methods; wavelets transforms, Picard iteration, and software tools. This second edition of Starck and Murtagh's highly appreciated reference again deals with topics that are at or beyond the state of the art. It presents material which is more algorithmically oriented than most alternatives and broaches new areas like ridgelet and curvelet transforms. Throughout the book various additions and updates have been made.
