Book excerpt: Welsh footballer Alan Curtis is synonymous with Swansea City, having played for the club during three different spells, but he also played for Leeds United, Southampton and Cardiff City, and won thirty-five caps for his country during an action-packed playing career that spanned two decades. Alan experienced the highs of the game at the top level with Swansea during their meteoric rise through all four divisions to reach the top flight, but this success came after he'd experienced the low of the Swans having to apply for re-election to the Football League in 1975. In this eventful autobiography, Alan recounts the topsy-turvy turns his career has taken, including a disappointing spell at Leeds United in 1979-80. He was the club's most expensive signing ever at the time, but a nasty clash with Peter Shilton left him sidelined for nine months. Determined to prove his critics wrong and overcome his injury, he played some of the best football of his career upon returning to Swansea, before moving to Southampton in 1983 to help the club challenge the Merseyside dominance of the time. Since his playing career wound down in 1987, Alan has remained in the game as a coach with both Swansea City and Wales, giving back to the game the wisdom and experience he garnered during his years as a player. In Curt, Alan reflects upon his colourful career, highlights just how much the beautiful game has changed since his playing days and explains why he's living proof that nice guys don't always finish second.

Book The Red Apprentice

Download or read book The Red Apprentice written by Jamie Jackson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returned to Old Trafford as caretaker manager midway through the 2018-19 season, he breathed new life into a team that was drifting. In this new and definitive biography, Jamie Jackson investigates why he was the perfect man for the job to bring back the glory days. After the confusion under David Moyes, the stagnation of Louis van Gaal and the growing trauma under Jose Mourinho, Manchester United were a club increasingly struggling to challenge for major honours, something the fans had been accustomed to during the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson. So when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a match-winning hero of the Reds' great Treble-winning side returned to Old Trafford on 19 December 2018 as caretaker manager, he was welcomed with open arms. Here was a man who understood what it was that the fans demanded, and he had a plan to give it to them. They went on a record-breaking run of victories that secured him the position on a permanent basis, before old frailties re-emerged, showing the scale of the job he had always dreamed of taking on. During the summer transfer window, he began a dramatic reshaping of the team's personnel to set them up for the 2019-20 season. The Red Apprentice, Jamie Jackson's fascinating biography of Solskjaer, takes the reader back to the Norwegian's early days to discover the making of the man, relives the highlights of a stunning playing career - and that Champions League-clinching goal in 1999 - and explains why he is the natural choice for United in the future.

Book Why the U S Men Will Never Win the World Cup

Download or read book Why the U S Men Will Never Win the World Cup written by Beau Dure and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: October 10, 2017. The U.S. men’s soccer team loses in Trinidad and Tobago, and fails to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Winning soccer’s greatest prize never seemed more distant. Immediate fixes—a new coach, a revamped professional league, a commitment to coaching education—won’t put the USA in the global elite. The nation is too fractious, too litigious, too wrapped up in other sports, and too late to the game. In Why the U.S. Men Will Never Win the World Cup: A Historical and Cultural Reality Check, Beau Dure shows what American soccer is really up against. Using hundreds of sources to trace more than 100 years of history, Dure delves into the culture that only recently lost its disdain for the global game and still doesn’t have the depth of soccer insight and passion that much of the world has had for generations. The difficulty isn’t any single thing—the mismanagement of failed leagues, the inability to agree on a path forward, the lawsuits that stem from an inability to agree, or the unique American culture that treasures its homegrown sports. It’s everything. And yet, Why the U.S. Men Will Never Win the World Cup is ultimately optimistic. Dure argues that with the right long-term changes, the U.S. can build a soccer environment that consistently produces quality players, strong results, and a lot more fun on the international stage. Soccer fans and skeptics alike will find this a fascinating examination of America’s past, present, and future in the beautiful game.

Download or read book Football Society The Law written by David Mcardle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a new dimension to the exciting and rapidly expanding field of sport and the law. David McArdle contemplates laws influence over the development of football between the founding of the English Football League in 1888 and the European Court of Justices seminal ruling in the Bosman case over a century later. From Boot Money to Bosman provides insights into how the law on violence and consent impacts upon acts of on-field violence, the courts role in securing players a greater degree of contractual freedom and the football governing bodies responses to player power. It also looks at the games, and the legislatures, attempts to prevent hooliganism and racism and considers the impact of the move towards all-seater stadia in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster. The book provides information on how race and sex discrimination law impact upon footballs employment practices, explains why the sports governing bodies are immune to public law remedies such as judicial review (but are possibly not immune the provisions of the Human Rights Act 1998) and exhorts footballs governing bodies to take the lead in participant protection initiatives. Lucid and thought-provoking, this book will be required reading for sports studies students and particularly those who are concerned with football and the law. It will also appeal to people working within the football industry and others who wish to understand how the law has influenced, and will continue to influence, the development of football.
