Book The Asteroid Apocalypse

Download or read book The Asteroid Apocalypse written by Rajeev Raghuram and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all know what happened to the dinosaurs. Unable to do anything but observe, they watched as an asteroid hurled itself into Earth’s atmosphere and experienced the ramifications of the asteroid’s impact on the planet. Factors such as mass, velocity, type, and trajectory resulted in the extinction of seventy percent of life on Earth. Millions of years later, are we prepared for our battle against this same opponent? The Asteroid Apocalypse is an educational, nonfiction account of the asteroid threat to life on Earth. Detailing the latest science and technologies, The Asteroid Apocalypse guides readers through simulations and space missions that study the asteroid threat. Author Rajeev Raghuram provides readers with the historical context and accessible data to create a holistic understanding of the many potential threats Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) and Potentially Hazardous Objects (PHOs) pose to Earth, as well as how scientists and astronomers around the world prepare to respond to these possible threats. Young readers and aspiring space engineers, astronomers, and scientists everywhere will enjoy this introduction into the world of space rocks swirling around our planet and how we can work to ensure a fate different to that of the dinosaurs.

Book Asteroids

  • Author : Curtis Peebles
  • Publisher : Smithsonian Institution
  • Release : 2016-04-26
  • ISBN : 1944466045
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Asteroids written by Curtis Peebles and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asteroids suggest images of a catastrophic impact with Earth, triggering infernos, tidal waves, famine, and death -- but these scenarios have obscured the larger story of how asteroids have been discovered and studied. During the past two centuries, the quest for knowledge about asteroids has involved eminent scientists and amateur astronomers, patient research and sudden intuition, advanced technology and the simplest of telescopes, newspaper headlines and Cold War secrets. Today, researchers have named and identified the mineral composition of these objects. They range in size from 33 feet to 580 miles wide and most are found in a belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Covering all aspects of asteroid investigation, Curtis Peebles shows how ideas about the orbiting boulders have evolved. He describes how such phenomena as the Moon's craters and dinosaur extinction were gradually, and by some scientists grudgingly, accepted as the results of asteroid impacts. He tells how a band of icy asteroids rimming the solar system, first proposed as a theory in the 1940s, was ignored for more than forty years until renewed interest and technological breakthroughs confirmed the existence of the Kuiper Belt. Peebles also chronicles the discovery of Shoemaker-Levy 9, a comet with twenty-two nuclei that crashed into Jupiter in 1994, releasing many times the energy of the world's nuclear arsenal. Showing how asteroid research is increasingly collaborative, the book provides insights into the evolution of scientific ideas and the ebb and flow of scientific debate.

Download or read book Asteroid Hunters written by Carrie Nugent and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, scientists could have the knowledge to prevent a natural disaster epic in scale—an asteroid hitting the earth and in this exciting, adventuresome book, Carrie Nugent explains how. What are asteroids, and where do they come from? And, most urgently: Are they going to hit the Earth? What would happen if one was on its way? Carrie Nugent is an asteroid hunter—part of a group of scientists working to map our cosmic neighborhood. For the first time ever, we are reaching the point where we may be able to prevent the horrible natural disaster that would result from an asteroid collision. In Asteroid Hunters, Nugent reveals what known impact asteroids have had: the extinction of the dinosaurs, the earth-sized hole Shoemaker Levy 9 left in Jupiter just a few decades ago, how the meteorite that bursted over Chelyabinsk in Russia could have started a war, and unlucky Ms. Anne Hodges—the only person (that we know of) in US history to be the victim of a direct hit. Nugent also introduces the telescope she uses to detect near-Earth asteroids. Ultimately, detection is the key to preventing asteroid impact, and these specialized scientists are working to prevent the unthinkable from happening. If successful, asteroid hunting will lead to the first natural disaster humans have the know-how and the technology to prevent. The successful hunt and mapping of asteroids could mean nothing less than saving life on earth.

Book Blindsight

Book excerpt: Hugo and Shirley Jackson award-winning Peter Watts stands on the cutting edge of hard SF with his acclaimed novel, Blindsight Two months since the stars fell... Two months of silence, while a world held its breath. Now some half-derelict space probe, sparking fitfully past Neptune's orbit, hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever's out there isn't talking to us. It's talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer, something en route. So who do you send to force introductions with unknown and unknowable alien intellect that doesn't wish to be met? You send a linguist with multiple personalities, her brain surgically partitioned into separate, sentient processing cores. You send a biologist so radically interfaced with machinery that he sees x-rays and tastes ultrasound. You send a pacifist warrior in the faint hope she won't be needed. You send a monster to command them all, an extinct hominid predator once called vampire, recalled from the grave with the voodoo of recombinant genetics and the blood of sociopaths. And you send a synthesist—an informational topologist with half his mind gone—as an interface between here and there. Pray they can be trusted with the fate of a world. They may be more alien than the thing they've been sent to find. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: Set in the period 2012 2035 is based on a war between the Rigilion Empire and people of Earth which has been on-going for 3500 years when Emperor Kane last attacked the Earth. Earth is destroyed and the humans now live on Mars with the old Martians. Prof Mike Anderson is sent into deep space to find a new home and help for the humans. He finds the Federation of Planets and the Old Martians who left Mars 3800 years ago after the first war with the Rigilions. Emperor Kane is now out of his long, 3500 year sleep in charge of the Rigilion Empire and now rules it as it was in his youth, barbarically. The Old Ones were a very advanced civilisation, also very interested in Earth, formerly Utopia and left our galaxy 25000 years ago. The Federation have been waiting thousands of years for their return, and searching for the right man to do this job. When Prof. Mike Anderson is brought to Mirad, the capital planet of the Federation, the High Priests realise their long wait has come to an end. After long talks and learning more of him, Prof. Mike Anderson is named the Chosen One. It is up to him to defeat Emperor Kane and bring peace to the galaxy. To accomplish this, he will need all the help he can get from Admiral Hayes and King Ramesses IV on Mars. The only way back is through the Miranda Gate, but it is locked closed and in the middle of the star Miranda, the same star Emperor Kane sent into their system to destroy the Earth. Mike must retake planets that have been under Rigilion control for thousands of years and try to overthrow Emperor Kane. He must accomplish this and find the Light Bearer, who will assist him in bringing back the Old Ones from where they have been for the past 25000 years. However, if they bring back the Old Ones, will they help the current people of the galaxy move forward, take over the galaxy themselves or bring another species with them who might be deadlier than the Rigilions?
