Book City of the Future

Download or read book City of the Future written by Mateusz Laszczkowski and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astana, the capital city of the post-Soviet Kazakhstan, has often been admired for the design and planning of its futuristic cityscape. This anthropological study of the development of the city focuses on every-day practices, official ideologies and representations alongside the memories and dreams of the city’s longstanding residents and recent migrants. Critically examining a range of approaches to place and space in anthropology, geography and other disciplines, the book argues for an understanding of space as inextricably material-and-imaginary, and unceasingly dynamic – allowing for a plurality of incompatible pasts and futures materialized in spatial form.

Book excerpt: Amid the endless plains of Kazakhstan, an extraordinary architectural experiment has arisen: Astana. Formerly an outpost of the Tsarist Empire in the barren steppe, the location had developed into a typical Soviet provincial town. However, both internationally renowned and local architects are now designing spectacular and unique buildings in this dynamic city. Furthermore, Astana will host the Expo 2017 which will take place only twenty years after the city was built in the steppe alongside the old centre, based on a masterplan by Kisho Kurokawa. This exhibition is meant to finally promote the Kazakh capital to the premier league of global metropolises. The book documents eighty diverse buildings and projects, examining the contradictory nature at play within oriental traditions, western models and Soviet influences. Therefore, this publication represents a critical analysis of Central Eurasian architecture at the beginning of the 21st century.

Book An Atmosphere of Quiet Repression

Download or read book An Atmosphere of Quiet Repression written by Andrea Berg and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2008 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Kazakhstan is not a country with frequent or dramatic government crackdowns on freedoms and human rights, when it comes to exercising fundamental rights such as worship, press freedom, and assembly, Kazakhstan's people live in an atmosphere that is far more circumscribed and fearful than one would expect of a country that will soon take on the leadership of an organization grounded in human rights principles. This report documents human rights violations in these three areas. It analyzes overly restrictive measures, and draft laws that fail to correct them. It describes the often subtle but effective methods the government uses to prevent people from fully exercising these rights. Kazakhstan should implement, soon, consistently, and meaningfully the human rights reforms it has promised the OSCE and which are required of it as an OSCE participating state. In so doing, Kazakhstan would provide an important positive example to other countries of Central Asia.

Download or read book The Nazarbayev Generation written by Marlene Laruelle and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This social and cultural analysis provides a new understanding of Kazakhstan’s younger generations that emerged during the rule of Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has been presiding over Kazakhstan for the thirty years since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Half of Kazakhstan’s population was born after he took power and have no direct memory of the Soviet regime. Since the early 2000s, they have lived in a world of political stability and relative material affluence, and have developed a strong consumerist culture. Even with growing government restrictions on media, religion, and formal public expression, they have been raised in a comparatively free country. This book offers the first collective study of the “Nazarbayev Generation,” illuminating the diversity of the country’s younger generations and the transformations of social and cultural norms that have taken place over the course of three decades. The contributors to this collection move away from state-centric, top-down perspectives in favor of grassroots realities and bottom-up dynamics in order to better integrate sociological data.

Book Kazakhstan s Assassinated Democracy

Download or read book Kazakhstan s Assassinated Democracy written by Yerzhan Dosmukhamedov and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kazakhstan's Assassinated Democracy describes how the highest levels of government in Kazakhstan are attempting to suppress the country's genuine democratization, particularly through the case of a political party, Atameken. It is based on extensive interviews with Dr. Yerzhan K. Dosmukhamedov, Chairman of the Atameken Party. These interviews and articles -- most of which were originally published in Kazakh or Russian -- have created quite a public stir in Kazakhstan. Dr. Dosmukhamedov analyses problems in building a civic society in the country, key political events, major issues of domestic and foreign policy, and the objective and subjective influences affecting the deep historical process currently underway in the country -- nothing less than the transformation of relationships between the state and the person. Kazakhstan's Assassinated Democracy is directed to a broad range of readers, and is intended for anyone interested in the future of Kazakhstan, the development of political parties, and the forces holding back democracy in that country. a(c)

Download or read book Kazakhstan written by Jonathan Aitken and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Aitken has written an insightful and illuminating portrait of 21st Century Kazakhstan as it approaches its 20th Anniversary of independence from the former Soviet Union. Surprises abound in Aitken's lively pages as he captures the creative tensions between Old and New Kazakhstan. Thanks to his unique access, the author has probed the darkest corners of the fading Soviet era, reporting from inside the prisons, the KGB and the Special Prosecutor's Office. He has also enjoyed the bright lights of the country's cultural renaissance, particularly in Almaty with its four orchestras, 19 theatres, 27 concert halls and Opera Houses. Aitken is at his best unravelling the economic and political surprises which are flowing from the Caspian oil boom with its knock on effects on foreign policy, GDP, and political reform. 'Kazakhstan is the newest powerhouse of Asia. From its President to its painters, poets, economists and entrepreneurs, this is a nation confidently on the move.' says Aitken 'we need to understand the new national identity of this increasingly successful player on the world stage.'

Book Kazakhstan and the Soviet Legacy

Download or read book Kazakhstan and the Soviet Legacy written by Jean-François Caron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Kazakhstan’s struggle to distance itself from its Soviet past over 25 years after its independence. To a very large extent, the affirmation of its sovereignty and a unique Kazakhstani way remain largely a matter of rhetoric. This book looks to explain the various aspects that show the continuity of Kazakhstan’s political system and governance with its colonial legacy, namely through its foreign policy, the country’s environmental policies, the judicial system, the management of religious diversity, the way youth organizations are structured and administered or how those who were born after the collapse of Soviet Union are still showing a typical Soviet behavioral attitude towards the political sphere. What are the reasons for this reluctance or incapacity to break away from these ties of the past? Will the unavoidable political transition that will bring new individuals to the head of the state contribute to a real change? Will this lead to a break with the country’s past and a radical shift in the country’s policies or will things remain as they have been since 1991? This book provides some valuable insights on what may happen in the near future to the biggest country of Central Asia.

Book Images of the Post Soviet Kazakhstan

Download or read book Images of the Post Soviet Kazakhstan written by Suchandana Chatterjee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study revolves round the relationship between space and transitional identity in Kazakhstan in the post-Soviet period. Emergent discourses about cosmopolitanism suggest multiple interactions in a transitional space. The cosmopolitanism of our times implies the dynamic responses of communities in transition. The diversities and heterogeneities instead of the specifics, the encounters, the networks, the challenges, the ways of living, the multitude of fates need to be considered. The picture is far bigger as there are infinite ways of being and belonging. The images are of the many, and as suggested here, relate to the Kazakh conscience. The Kazakh conscience represents a repertoire of diverse opinions regarding Eurasianism, intellectuals’ reformist agenda, zhuz legacy, people’s histories. What stands out is the wider milieu of a cosmopolitan Almaty which is the home of a cultural elite or a citified Astana that has been showcased as the “appropriate site” of the Kazakhs’ steppe identity. The variety is also seen in the case of Uyghur neighbourhoods of Almaty, in the frontiers of Akmolinsk oblast reminiscent of Tsarist Russia’s Cossack military fortresses, in gulag memorials near Astana and in the Caspian hub Atyrau that is iconised as the oil fountain of the present century. Kazakh borderlands have a completely different profile—that of shared spaces. The Kazakhs’ attachment to their homeland is a constant—but the question is whether that territorial reality fits into other paradigms of identity and belonging. Such questions arise in the case of Mongolian Kazakhs and Uyghurs of Semirechie—in both cases the sentiment of place is strong compared to the overwhelming global experiences of the mainland Kazakhs. Book Russia s Relations with Kazakhstan

Download or read book Russia s Relations with Kazakhstan written by Yelena Nikolayevna Zabortseva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent political developments in post-Soviet countries have raised novel issues regarding the stability of the post-Cold War world order. A new direction in policy has been exemplified by the recent bolstering of a number of post-Soviet political and economic institutions - such as CSTO, SCO and the Eurasian Economic Union - in which the role of Kazakhstan is considerable. In addition to its unique geopolitical location, Kazakhstan’s importance in regional integration structures and international relations more broadly is reinforced by its rich oil and uranium deposits. This book centres on an exploration of the changing relations between Russia and Kazakhstan and their impact on post-Soviet interactions with the rest of the world. The role of specific factors in the formation of the post-Soviet regional system will be explored in historical perspective. The multifaceted relations between Kazakhstan and Russia from 1991 to the contemporary period will be analysed in terms of relations in several spheres: political, military and security, Kazakhstan’s nuclear withdrawal, ethnicity and national identity, economic, foreign policies, regionalism and international trends and the impact of historic trends. An important analysis of Kazakhstan, the second largest country in the post-Soviet world, this book is of interest to researchers of International Relations, Post-Soviet Studies and Central Asia Studies.
