Oftentimes, elevated blood lead levels are not recognized until serious health issues are found. In the United States, approximately 250,000 children aged 1-5 years have elevated blood lead levels greater than 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2004). However, there is no effective treatment for lead poisoning. Chelation can merely decrease the blood lead levels but cannot reverse the existing damage. To prevent and control childhood lead poisoning, many studies have been conducted to investigate the sources of lead and analyze effective prevention strategies. Blood lead screening tests, as preventive methods for childhood lead poisoning, have been implemented by several states for years. However, some still question the effectiveness of blood lead screening tests, and the cost of these tests creates another barrier. These factors largely hinder the progress of eliminating childhood lead poisoning. To institute blood lead screening tests among different populations, some crucial factors must be considered, such as the children's demographic information and the barriers of accessing health care. The data used in this study was provided by the Nevada Kindergarten Health Survey conducted in 2010. This study aims to analyze the association between the likelihood of obtaining blood lead screening tests and childhood demographic characteristics, namely annual household income, race/ethnicity, home zip code, and barriers to accessing to healthcare. The study results signal the barriers for children's blood lead screening tests and provide recommendations for public health professionals and policy makers to implement effective preventive methods for childhood lead poisoning.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The substantial impact of indoor air quality and environmental hazards in the home on one's health has long been recognized in the field of public health. This cross-sectional study investigates the risk between home based hazards, specifically lead, and respiratory health in children. The objective of this study is to examine the extent to which children testing positive for blood lead exposure are at an increased risk for having poor respiratory health. Methods: A nationally representative sample of 977 children ages 1- 6 years was obtained from the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Information from the demographic, blood lead level, and respiratory health questionnaire databases were combined to assess the impact of lead exposure on respiratory health. Blood lead exposure (BLL) was assessed at the following cut-off values: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10ug/dL. Respiratory health status was dichotomized as good and poor respiratory health based on the study participant's answers to the questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between blood lead levels and respiratory health status while controlling for the following potential confounders: race, age, sex, and annual family income. Results: This study was unable to establish a relationship between lead exposure and poor respiratory health in children ages 1-6 years, and the lack of relationship held for increasing levels of lead exposure. However, this study did reveal the significant impact of low level lead exposure in children with approximately 77% exposed at BLL [greater or equal to]1ug/dL and 39% at BLL [greater or equal to 2] ug/dL. It is important to note that this is only a snapshot of the amount of lead exposure within this population; it is very likely that the levels fluctuate. Conclusion: While the percentage of study population decreases as the lead exposure increases, it is still alarming at the number of children exposed to low levels of lead. A large and growing body of literature documents the adverse health effects associated with low levels of lead exposure in children. This finding further supports the need for continuing research in examining the true impact of low level lead exposure and in determining a threshold dose level. In addition, a stronger study with a larger sample size and a more clearly defined respiratory health variable would allow for the relationship to be more closely examined before a definitive "no association" result can be made.

It was organized jointly by the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in association with the UK Department of the Environment and the Scottish Home and Health Department. It brought together most of the internationally recognized groups working on the effects of lead exposure on child development including child psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, epidemiologists, toxicologists, stati sticians, and medical practitioners. One of the unique features of the meeting was that it included workers from initially separate fields of lead research, in particular those undertaking studies in infants and in older children, and those carrying out behavioural research in animals, as well as those undertaking biochemical studies on mechanisms of lead effect. The structure of this book reflects the main elements of the meeting. As such it includes three main sections. The first consists of two major state-of the-art reviews, and two invited introductory papers. The reviews were prepared for the organizers of the conference by two of the Editors. The objectives were to assess critically the state of current knowledge in this field and to provide a scientific basis both for policy decisions and for further research. The review prepared by Marjorie Smith for the Commission of the European Communities focusses on methodological and design issues, and summarizes our present scientific knowledge in this area.
