The effects were indeed disastrous and 227,898 people were killed. Tsunami events are a natural part of the Earth's geophysical system. There have been numerous events in the past and they will continue to be a threat to humanity; even more so today, when the coastal zone is occupied by so much more human activity and many more people. Therefore, tsunamis pose a very serious threat to humanity. The only way for us to face this threat is by increased knowledge so that we can meet future events by efficient warning systems and aid organizations. This book offers extensive and new information on tsunamis; their origin, history, effects, monitoring, hazards assessment and proposed handling with respect to precaution. Only through knowledge do we know how to behave in a wise manner. This book should be a well of tsunami knowledge for a long time, we hope.

Book excerpt: The earthquake and tsunami of 26 December 2004 devastated coastal communities in 12 countries in the Indian Ocean region, with Aceh Province, Sumatra, Indonesia the hardest hit. This report sets out the findings of the UNEP Asian Tsunami Disaster Task Force, set up to help national environmental authorities in the affected countries with their assessment and response to the environmental impact of the disaster. It summarises the interim findings from ongoing assessments in Indonesia, the Maldives, the Seychelles, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Yemen, including evidence of environmental concerns that require immediate action. The short term clean-up programme must be coupled with policy development and strengthened institutions, and the recovery agenda will require the clean-up of contamination hotspots, and rehabilitation of critical livelihoods and ecosystems.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami: The Global Response to a Natural Disaster is the first comprehensive assessment of the environmental, social, and economic costs of this tragedy. Soon after the tsunami, an international team of geographers, geologists, anthropologists, and political scientists traveled to the most damaged areas to observe and document the tsunami's impact. The Indian Ocean Tsunami draws on data collected by this team. Editors Pradyumna P. Karan and Shanmugam P. The Second SCSTW was organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University on 1–3 December 2008 in Shanghai. This proceedings book contains a collection of 46 articles selected among 69 articles presented in the Third SCSTW held on 3–5 November 2009 in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Pulau Pinang. This collection of selected articles explores a variety of issues related to tsunami as well as other natural disasters such as earthquakes, storm surge and landslide. The proceedings consists of two books, with the first book focusing on tsunami simulation for impact assessment, while the second book covers education, protection and preparedness to face tsunami and other natural disasters. The contributors of the articles in the proceedings come from differing academic and professional background including but not limited to engineering, mathematics, physics, biology, geography, environmental and marine sciences, sustainable studies, education, humanities and architecture. Book excerpt: To build a tsunami-resilient coastal community it is fundamental to understand the characteristics of past tsunami patterns and likely impact of possible future events. The MOST model (Method of Splitting Tsunami) and ComMIT (Community Model Interface for Tsunami) were used to model patterns of water levels, wave speed and direction, and inundation distances resulting from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami on the Khao Lak coast of Thailand. The model of the 2004 tsunami was calibrated against estimates of water depths made along the coast in early 2005; an M, = 9.3 earthquake in the model was found to best match observations. The model was verified against a variety of other evidence, including digital photographs and video clips taken on the day of the tsunami, mainly from two sites along the Khao Lak coast at Nang Thong and Bang Niang beaches, together with aerial surveys and a tide-gauge record. The timing and extent of water recession prior to the arrival of the first wave, the heights and number of the subsequent waves, and the inundation distances corresponded well providing confidence in the application of the MOST model to this coastal region. Historical evidence suggest that tsunami of the magnitude of 2004 are rare (200-700 y) so for mitigation planning in the Khao Lak area a smaller tsunami genic-earthquake (M; =8.9) was chosen (l00-500 y). Sensitivity to the choice of M, was also considered. The tsunami from such an event is similar in its character to the 2004 event, less extreme but still highly destructive, reaching the Khao Lak coast in ~ 2 h 15 min, and preceded by receding water levels. The first wave (5.0-6.5 m high) arrives 2h 25 min after the earthquake travelling at 6-8 mls at the coastline.

Book excerpt: Of all the huge natural disasters that claimed the lives of thousands in Asia, the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 was the largest, estimated to have killed more than 230,000 people. The scope of damage brought about by this natural disaster urges focus on recovery and post-disaster reconstruction from several perspectives. Here we find an in-depth ethnography of Thailand and the role of culture and religion as an underpinning issue in post-disaster recovery. Following the post-tsunami recovery over five years, the book provides knowledge on socio-cultural responses from affected local communities after natural hazards, and is based on original material collected in Thailand after the 2004 tsunami. With a focus on how culture and religion interplay in the processes of building resilience and decreasing vulnerability, it gives a deeper understanding of how disasters are experienced and dealt with on a local level. It examines survivors’ experiences of rituals and ceremonies that became a part of the survivors’ lives in new ways after the tsunami, offering psychological reassurance and religious efficaciousness as well as communication links between themselves and the deceased. Using observations, narratives and material from in-depth interviews with survivors, relatives, relief workers, officials and Buddhist monks and nuns, this book contributes to the research on anthropology of disaster and to the development of research on cultural resilience and religion in post-disaster recovery. Book excerpt: The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami raised concern among marine park managers and hazard mitigation professionals about the significant impact of major coastal hazards on marine park natural resources and ecosystems. The main reason for this concern is the strong linkage of marine parks and their rich assortment of ecosystem services to coastal community social and economic well-being, particularly as it relates to park tourism. This relationship was examined for marine national parks (MNPs) along Thailand?s Andaman coast in the aftermath of the devastating 2004 tsunami. Four principal issues were examined: the impacts of the tsunami on marine parks and how they affected the tourism economy; the recovery efforts undertaken and their effectiveness; other actions that, if taken, might have improved preparedness and made recovery efforts more effective; and how marine parks might be made more resilient to natural disasters in the future. The principal method used to address these issues was a Delphi expert opinion process, supplemented by field investigations, interviews, and spatial data collection and analysis. Four specific parks with different degrees of tsunami impacts were selected as a basis for this study. Direct and indirect tsunami impacts to the business community were judged to have the most significant effects on tourism, followed by the direct impacts of the tsunami on the built environment and associated infrastructure. Social, health and safety impacts and impacts to natural resources and ecosystems were of lesser importance to the park tourism. However, recovery actions taken to rebuild infrastructure and park-serving facilities inside and outside park boundaries were judged most effective at helping to get park tourism back on its feet; tourism recovery actions associated with natural resources, the business community, and social services were judged to be only moderately effective. Numerous barriers and constraints to marine park tourism recovery were identified, some natural, but most human-caused. An idealized set of preparedness, response, and recovery actions were also identified and prioritized. These proved useful in designing planning guidelines that will help marine parks evaluate their vulnerability, set priorities for mitigation and preparedness, and become more resilient to hazards in the future.
