This book was released on 2017 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pacific sardine resource is assessed each year in support of the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) process of stipulating annual harvest specifications for the U.S. fishery. This report serves as a full stock assessment for purposes of advising management for the 2017-18 fishing year. Presently, the assessment/management schedule for Pacific sardine is based on a full assessment conducted every three years, with an update assessment conducted in the interim years. A full stock assessment was conducted in 2014 (Hill et al. 2014; STAR 2014) and update assessments were completed in 2015 and 2016 (Hill et al. 2015, 2016)"--Preface. This book was released on 2018 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The following Pacific sardine assessment update was conducted to inform U.S. fishery management for the cycle that begins July 1, 2018 and ends June 30, 2019. Two assessment approaches were reviewed at the STAR Panel in February 2017: an AT survey-based approach (preferred by the STAT); and a model-based assessment (model ALT). Given forecasting issues highlighted in the review (see STAR 2017 and 'Unresolved Problems and Major Uncertainties' below), the Panel ultimately recommended that management advice be based on model ALT for the 2017-18 fishing year. The following update of model ALT represents the final base model from the February 2017 STAR (Hill et al. 2017, STAR 2017) with the addition of updated/new landings (2016-17), one AT-based biomass estimate and age composition from the SWFSC's summer 2017 survey, along with one additional recruitment deviation for estimation of the 2017 year class"--Executive summary.

Book excerpt: The sardine is a paradoxical fish. Seemingly insignificant, it has made fortunes for some, and, when stocks have collapsed, caused hardship for many, its status shifting from utilitarian food to gourmand’s delight. And in this book, Trevor Day—diver, fish-watcher, and marine conservationist—travels across four continents to meet the sardine in both its natural and cultural environment. Tracing the fish’s journey from minuscule egg to dinner plate, Day interweaves the story of the sardine with the rise and fall of entire fisheries. A wide-ranging look at the cluster of fish species called sardines, Day’s book explores their relationship both with other marine creatures and with us. Elite predators feast on sardines, yet these silvery slivers are fast-breeding and opportunistic enough to likely survive their hunters for many millennia to come. Whether swimming free as a shoaling fish at the mercy of predators, packed in tins (and as a metaphor for overcrowding), or grilled on the streets of Lisbon as part of the Feast of St. Anthony, sardines have come to represent conformity, vulnerability, and tradition. And as Day’s biography of this familiar but under-appreciated fish reveals, the sardine is a barometer for the health of our oceans, a fish with lessons for us all about our stewardship of the seas.

The following assessment update for 2016-17 management is based on data and methods reviewed by a Stock Assessment Review (STAR) Panel during March 2014 (STAR 2014) and more fully described in Hill et al. (2014). A stock assessment update conducted in March-April 2015 served as the basis for management measures during the 2015-16 management year (Hill et al. 2015). The 2016 stock assessment update includes one additional year of data from fishery-dependent and fishery-independent sources. The draft assessment was reviewed by members of the Scientific and Statistical Committee’s CPS Subcommittee on March 10, 2016 in Sacramento, CA. The following final draft reflects minor modifications recommended during that review and was provided to the Pacific Fishery Management Council for their April 2016 briefing book"--Preface. Book excerpt: "The following Pacific sardine assessment update was conducted to inform U.S. fishery management for the fishing year that begins July 1, 2015 and ends June 30, 2016. Model 'T' represented the final base model from the most recent stock assessment review (STAR) conducted in March 2014 (Hill et al. 2014, STAR 2014). This update assessment appends Model T with one additional year of data from fishery-dependent and -independent sources and is based on similar parameterizations as included in the most recently reviewed Model T.... This assessment focuses on the Pacific sardine northern subpopulation (NSP) that ranges from northern Baja California, México to British Columbia, Canada and extends up to 300 nm offshore. In all past assessments, the default approach has been to assume that all catches landed in ports from Ensenada (ENS) to British Columbia (BC) were from the northern subpopulation"--Executive summary.
