Most of these papers were presented by the authors at a NATO Science for Peace Workshop held in Izmir on 13 - 14 May, 2003 and reflect a part of their latest work conducted within the general confines of the title of the NATO Project. Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey serves as the hub of Project SfP977231 and coordinates research under the project with universities within Turkey, e. g. Istanbul Technical University and Kocaeli University, and with partner institutions in Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: A few articles have also been contributed by invited experts, who are all noted researchers in the field. Altogether, the contents of the volume deal with a vast array of problems in Seismic Assessment and Rehabilitation and cover a wide range of possible solutions, techniques and proposals. It is intended to touch upon many of these aspects separately below. Earthquakes constitute possibly the most widely spread and also the most feared of natural hazards. Recent earthquakes within the first six months of 2003, such as the Bingol Earthquake in Turkey and the Algerian earthquake, have caused both loss of life and severe damage to property.

The first chapter of the book deals with the geotechnical and structural aspects of the 2010-2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Aspects related to the mitigation of pounding effects as well as the design of structures prone to pounding are also discussed. Earthquake-induced structural pounding between insufficiently separated buildings, and between bridge segments, has been repeatedly observed during ground motions. The reports after earthquakes indicate that it may result in limited local damage in the case of moderate seismic events, or in considerable destruction or even the collapse of colliding structures during severe ground motions. Pounding in buildings is usually caused by the differences in dynamic properties between structures, which make them vibrate out-of-phase under seismic excitation. In contrast, in the case of longer bridge structures, it is more often the seismic wave propagation effect that induces collisions between superstructure segments during earthquakes.

It examines six sets of concrete and steel frames, which vary in terms of their height (3-, 6- and 9-storey) and include regular and irregular frames. Each structure frame was designed based on Eurocode 2 and 3 with the aid of Eurocode 8 for earthquake loading. The SAP2000 software was used as the main tool for the pushover analysis and incremental dynamic analysis. Subsequently, each chapter begins with a detailed explanation of the collapse of the structures and the application in nonlinear analysis. The role of the analysis of strong motion records in damage assessment codes based on expert system is pointed out. A literature survey on damage assessment and structural system identification is presented. A program for the identification of linear structures, based on strong motion records, has been written out and implemented by the authors. The theoretical and computational aspects of the identification algorithm are discussed. Strong motion records from six buildings that experienced different levels of damage during the San Fernando earthquake (1971) are analyzed. The analysis of strong motion records of buildings that have been damaged during the San Fernando earthquake shows a good agreement between the numerical values of the damage indices and the levels of damage observed in the actual structures. If this result is confirmed by further analysis of both strong motion records from actual structures and small scale experiments, these damage indices can be used as a measure of structural damage. Areas of future research are outlined"--Abstract.

It covers the latest advances in three widely popular research areas in Earthquake Engineering: Performance-Based Seismic Design, Seismic Isolation Systems, and Structural Health Monitoring. The book shows the vulnerability of high-rise and seismically isolated buildings to long periods of strong ground motions, and proposes new passive and semi-active structural seismic isolation systems to protect against such effects. These systems are validated through real-time hybrid tests on shaking tables. Structural health monitoring systems provide rapid assessment of structural safety after an earthquake and allow preventive measures to be taken, such as shutting down the elevators and gas lines, before damage occurs. Using the vibration data from instrumented tall buildings, the book demonstrates that large, distant earthquakes and surface waves, which are not accounted for in most attenuation equations, can cause long-duration shaking and damage in tall buildings. The overview of the current performance-based design methodologies includes discussions on the design of tall buildings and the reasons common prescriptive code provisions are not sufficient to address the requirements of tall-building design. In addition, the book explains the modelling and acceptance criteria associated with various performance-based design guidelines, and discusses issues such as selection and scaling of ground motion records, soil-foundation-structure interaction, and seismic instrumentation and peer review needs.
