Book Analyzing Multivariable Water Chemistry to Assess Water Quality of Reference Sites in Texas in Compliance with the National Rivers and Streams Assessment

Download or read book Analyzing Multivariable Water Chemistry to Assess Water Quality of Reference Sites in Texas in Compliance with the National Rivers and Streams Assessment written by Gabriel Wechter Nejad and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many streams and rivers in Texas, only a few have been previously included in the National Rivers and Streams Assessment (NRSA), a national water quality survey that recurs every five years. This research involved sampling a subset of 19 potential reference sites in Texas identified by NRSA but not previously sampled. All sites were located in the Colorado, Brazos, and Trinity River Basins. This study sought to bridge data gaps in the NRSA to include rural ecoregions, determine the extent to which rivers and streams support healthy biological conditions, and identify major stressors to inform management decisions. The study collected water chemistry data using field and laboratory methods in compliance with NRSA protocols. Each site was sampled in spring and summer to compare seasonal differences in water quality. Statistical analyses employed spatial comparisons of water quality among different streams by season, river basin, and watershed land use. Streamflow decreased at most sites from spring to summer. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) showed large variability with a general increase from spring to summer across all river basins. Total phosphorus (TP) also increased from spring to summer in the Colorado and Trinity River Basins but decreased in the Brazos River Basin. The various trends displayed in these four water quality parameters suggests that land use is a significant driver of seasonal water and nutrient inputs to small streams. Overall, the large variability in the dataset supports the argument that multiple samples should be collected in a water quality analysis to capture seasonal changes as well as differences among ecoregions within the same river basin.

Book Statistical Aspects of Water Quality Monitoring

Download or read book Statistical Aspects of Water Quality Monitoring written by A.H. El-Shaarawi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers from the ``Workshop on the Statistical Aspects of Water Quality Monitoring'', held on October 7-10 1985, at the National Water Research Institute in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The prime objective of the Workshop was to generate interaction between the statistical community and scientists working in the area of Water Quality Monitoring. To this end, topics covered in this Workshop fall into two categories: (1) Methods Development, and (2) the Imaginative Application of Existing Methodologies. Subjects covered include: Time Series, Estimation of Loading, Clustering, Model Development, Censoring Data Analysis, Quality Control and Data Acquisition. In the area of environmental sciences, statistical applications are still in their infancy, with few attempts to systematically develop techniques dealing with environmental issues. The publication of this book is one step towards identifying appropriate statistical techniques and diagnosing problems in Water Quality Monitoring which require new statistical methodologies. The papers presented in this volume represent international expertise, consolidating detailed information on both conventional and new methods.
