Book Assessment of Iris Reflection Artifacts and Alignment in Fundus Images

Download or read book Assessment of Iris Reflection Artifacts and Alignment in Fundus Images written by Jafet A. Morales and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatic detection of retinal diseases can reduce the amount of work done by manual image graders. However, the performance of automated techniques is affected by the quality of the digital image. Studies have shown that a significant percentage of retinal images are not of adequate quality for automatic detection of eye diseases, or even for manual grading. This thesis introduces two methods for automatically evaluating two important aspects of quality of retinal images. The first method for fundus image quality assessment detects iris reflection artifacts in the field of view, caused by misalignment of the camera. Detection and segmentation of these artifacts is based on properties of the gradient of intensity in the blue channel over the region covered by these type of artifacts. The results for the proposed method are promising. A sensitivity of 97.2 percent and specificity of 96.9 percent were obtained for detecting halo artifacts with this method. The second method proposed in this thesis evaluates alignment of a fundus image in terms of translation and rotation. These two metrics are calculated after locating two landmarks in the fundus image, the optic disc and the fovea. The optic disc is located by template matching. The acute angle between the horizontal and the segment that joins the optic nerve head (ONH) and fovea is estimated by correlation of an elliptical local vessel density (ELVD) function centered on the optic disc with a template. This angle and the average separation between optic disc and fovea are used to reduce the search space for the fovea. The correlation between translation obtained from the algorithm and translation obtained from the true data is .72. The correlation between rotation obtained from the algorithm and rotation obtained from the true data is also .72, if images where the fovea cannot be located manually and images where the translation algorithm fails are excluded. Possible improvements for alignment evaluation are discussed.

Book Retinal Angiography and Optical Coherence Tomography

Download or read book Retinal Angiography and Optical Coherence Tomography written by J. Fernando Arévalo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OCT is a relatively new imaging technique that is becoming increasingly popular among ophthalmologists in both private and academic settings. Imaging has been a slow moving area in ophthalmology for some time, but now OCT is providing another, more detailed source of demonstrable change in the eye, in diagnostic, therapeutic or post-surgical setting. OCT and ultrasound both measure advancing disease states and post surgical healing. The difference is that OCT shows more subtle changes, particularly post-surgically.
