Book excerpt: In May 2019, the Institut für Arbeitsschutz der Deutschen Gesetzlichen Unfallversicherung (IFA) was hosting the 14th International Conference on Hand-Arm-Vibration. The event is organised every four years under the auspices of international expert bodies at changing places. It is aimed at all stakeholders in the subject, whether experts from the occupational safety and health and research communities or management personnel in the areas of manufacture and design. Mechanized manual work is often associated with exposure to vibration that may impact adversely upon the health and well-being of the affected individuals. Besides impairments to comfort and performance, harm to the hand-arm system, possibly permanent, must be prevented as a matter of priority. In a world of work that is becoming more and more complex, combined exposures are also becoming increasingly relevant. What influence does hand-arm vibration have in conjunction with noise or whole-body vibration? What contribution can be made by medicine, diagnostics, epidemiology, measurement technology and prevention to the identification and containment of risks, and better still, to their elimination? What is the role of international regulatory activity in this context? The 14th International Conference on Hand-Arm Vibration aimed to address these and many other questions concerning hand-arm vibration, and to find answers relevant to the field.

Stress in law enforcement personnel and the reasons why law enforcement professionals experience difficulty is explored. Common causes of unfit officers are examined, including major psychiatric syndromes, personality disorders, and interesting findings regarding family psychiatric history in officers found fit or unfit for duty. Many of the myriad of structured psychological tests that can be used in FFD evaluations are discussed. Medication issues in FFD evaluations are explored as well as the potential impact that medications may have on officers' fitness. Another section of the book explores police officers' expectations of mental health professionals and outlines stereotypes and expectations that law enforcement personnel have regarding mental health personnel. For evaluators, an understanding of the lack of information and misconceptions that officers have may assist them with interacting and educating officers and referring departments. Other sections consider gender and ethnic issues in hiring, stress, and FFD evaluations; duty death and the nature of the stress experienced by law enforcement personnel; police suicide and FFD; how to manage misfit officers; and legal considerations involved in the conduct of FFD evaluations. It is hoped that by reading this book, mental health professionals will be better able to understand and treat the difficulties that law enforcement professionals encounter in the performance of their hazardous and stressful public service. Law enforcement executives may also benefit from understanding how psychological experts determine fitness.

Ever since it was originally published in 1986, this standard has been unclear in its assessment of repeated isolated shocks. The current version of ISO 5349-1:2001 states in its scope that the time dependency for human response to repeated shocks is not fully known. Caution is therefore advised in the application of this part of ISO 5349 to such vibration (isolated shocks). In response to an initiative on the part of the ISO/TC 108 Technical Committee, a workshop was held at the 13th International Conference on Hand-Arm Vibration in Beijing in 2015 for the purpose of determining the current state of knowledge concerning exposure to repeated isolated shock vibration caused by machinery and tools and its pathophysiological and epidemiological assessment, and evaluating gaps in knowledge in the interests of future research activity. This report contains the papers presented at the workshop. Part I provides an overview of the results of the workshop and of details of two papers. Part II contains a research report containing background information on two further papers presented at the workshop.

Are the daily exposure levels of vibration to which construction workers are exposed within acceptable limits? HAVS is a group of symptoms related to the use of equipment and tools that vibrate. Symptoms range from vascular and neurological to musculoskeletal, and affect different parts of the hand-arm system. Vibration is the oscillatory motion of bodies. It is divided into hand transmitted vibration, which is vibration entering the body through hands, and whole-body vibration, which enters the body when it is supported by some vibrating surface. There are over 8 million workers that are exposed to vibration, and as an occupational hazard, it is not given much attention in Botswana and in most parts of the developing world. A quantitative cross-sectional study design was used since there were different groups whose results were compared. The vibrometer was be used to quantify the daily vibration levels in each sample population, and the questionnaire distributed provided additional information as to the presence of symptoms or history of any discomfort resulting from the type of work. The population of interest includes the workers at a construction site within the University of Botswana, and these were divided into 5 groups, each group comprised 2 to 3 workers selected systematically, from whom data was collected depending on the tools available on the construction site. This means that the study population was 15. When one looks at its negative effects on the human body, which range from simple nausea to HAVS, it is safe to say that vibration is not getting the attention it needs. Various technical developments in society have led to an increase in the number and types of sources of vibration to which people are exposed.
