Book Assessment of Climate Variability of the Greenland Ice Sheet Integration of in Situ and Satellite Data

Download or read book Assessment of Climate Variability of the Greenland Ice Sheet Integration of in Situ and Satellite Data written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed research involves the application of multispectral satellite data in combination with ground truth measurements to monitor surface properties of the Greenland Ice Sheet which are essential for describing the energy and mass of the ice sheet. Several key components of the energy balance are parameterized using satellite data and in situ measurements. The analysis will be done for a ten year time period in order to get statistics on the seasonal and interannual variations of the surface processes and the climatology. Our goal is to investigate to what accuracy and over what geographic areas large scale snow properties and radiative fluxes can be derived based upon a combination of available remote sensing and meteorological data sets. Operational satellite sensors are calibrated based on ground measurements and atmospheric modeling prior to large scale analysis to ensure the quality of the satellite data. Further, several satellite sensors of different spatial and spectral resolution are intercompared to access the parameter accuracy. Proposed parameterization schemes to derive key component of the energy balance from satellite data are validated. For the understanding of the surface processes a field program was designed to collect information on spectral albedo, specular reflectance, soot content, grain size and the physical properties of different snow types. Further, the radiative and turbulent fluxes at the ice/snow surface are monitored for the parameterization and interpretation of the satellite data. The expected results include several baseline data sets of albedo, surface temperature, radiative fluxes, and different snow types of the entire Greenland Ice Sheet. These climatological data sets will be of potential use for climate sensitivity studies in the context of future climate change. Steffen, K. and Abdalati, W. and Stroeve, J. and Key, J. Book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space

Download or read book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space (National Academies Press, 2018) provides detailed guidance on how relevant federal agencies can ensure that the United States receives the maximum benefit from its investments in Earth observations from space, while operating within realistic cost constraints. This short booklet, designed to be accessible to the general public, provides a summary of the key ideas and recommendations from the full decadal survey report.

Book Global Outlook for Ice Snow

Download or read book Global Outlook for Ice Snow written by Pål Prestrud and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2007 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by more than 70 scientists from around the world, this publication assesses the state of the environment and the trends in ice and snow-covered regions (the cryosphere). It looks at the significance of climate changes for ecosystems and human well-being, both now and in the years to come, given that changes in ice and snow alter the distribution of the earth's heat and water, and influence regional and global ocean circulation. This publication is an official project of the International Polar Year 2007-2008.

This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 1807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the science related to climate change. It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Book Meteorological Processes Controlling the Variability of Net Annual Accumulation Over the Greenland Ice Sheet

Download or read book Meteorological Processes Controlling the Variability of Net Annual Accumulation Over the Greenland Ice Sheet written by Deborah J. Bathke and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Climatic information available from the spatially extensive suite of firn and ice cores collected under the Program for Arctic and Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA), in conjunction with other data, provides an unparalleled opportunity to investigate accumulation changes over the Greenland ice sheet and to assess its ability to record and preserve a history of North Atlantic climate variability. The ice core derived accumulation histories demonstrate that the influence of glaciological noise on the climate signal is strongly influenced by the accumulation rate. Thus, it may be difficult to discern regionally representative climate signals from individual cores at lower accumulation sites on short time scales suggesting that either time or spatial averaging of the records is necessary. Individual rotated principal components analysis (RPCA) on the time series of net annual accumulation, the total concentration of insoluble dust particles, and the (delta)18O annual average and seasonal extrema reveal that cores located in different regions of the ice sheet do not vary consistently for the period of record in this study (1965-1996). Specifically, cores from southern Greenland vary in a manner different from those in the central west region. Thus, proxy climate histories drawn from a single core record are not necessarily representative of the entire ice sheet. Comparison of the scores associated with the central west and southern Greenland spatial patterns with atmospheric and oceanic data suggest that different processes may be responsible for delivery of precipitation to each region. Correlations of the North Atlantic Oscillation with the core data, combined with composites of mean sea level pressure and 500 hPA heights for accumulation extremes, suggest a negative relationship with the central west region during winter, spring, and summer. Conversely, the same analyses for the southern region suggest a positive relationship to the NAO during summer. Accumulation in the central west region is likely influenced by the NAO during winter and spring, as well as by associated changes in surface temperatures over Canada and sea surface temperatures in the Baffin Bay/Davis Strait. Alternatively, accumulation in southern Greenland is consistently associated with changes in the Pacific.
