Book Assessing the Representativeness of Forest Ecosystem and Growth and Yield Plots in Ontario

Download or read book Assessing the Representativeness of Forest Ecosystem and Growth and Yield Plots in Ontario written by Daniel William McKenney and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representativeness is often identified as a criterion for ecological studies and assessments of parks and reserve networks. In this report, an assessment was made of the environmental representativeness of forest plot data from a number of Forest Ecosystem Classification and Growth and Yield surveys in Ontario. The researchers examined the frequency distribution of the survey plots in terms of selected climatic, soil, and topographic gradients. In addition, they evaluated the distributions of plots against site regions and new climatic classifications (or regionalisations) that were generated for the province. Undersurveyed climatic domains were identified and recommendations are included regarding the design and location of future Forest Ecosystem Classification and Growth and Yield survey plots.

Book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape

Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Book excerpt: The goal of the Ecological Land Classification Program (ELC) is to establish a comprehensive and consistent province-wide approach for ecosystem description, inventory, and interpretation that will facilitate key conservation objectives at a variety of scales from site to landscape levels. This prospectus expresses the range of needs and priorities for work in Ontario. The document gives a history of the concept and describes the analysis of needs; program components, including classification development and rationalization, wetlands classification, ecosystem succession, mapping and inventory, and education and transfer; program structure and delivery; and program length and review.

Book A User Need Survey on Forest Landscape Ecology in Ontario

Download or read book A User Need Survey on Forest Landscape Ecology in Ontario written by R. W. Arnup and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1995 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landscape-scale approach to ecological issues has been made part of the forest policy framework in Ontario and has been incorporated into the Crown Forest Sustainability Act of 1994. Resource managers and policymakers in the province must integrate the landscape ecological perspective into established systems of resource management planning. The Forest Landscape Ecology Program commissioned a survey of their concerns and information needs with respect to this process. This report summarizes the issues and concerns reported by the respondents into 28 common themes grouped into the following general areas of activity: managing for biodiversity, wildlife management and habitat supply, ecosystem inventory and management, natural heritage definition and conservation, managing for multiple use, and assessing effects of development activities. The participants also reported on four main types of information needs.

Book Global to Local Ecological Land Classification

Download or read book Global to Local Ecological Land Classification written by Richard A. Sims and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Land Classification (ELC) refers to the description of land resources at a range of spatial resolutions (i.e. global to local) and for a range of purposes or values. The emerging science of ELC is in fact a very carefully integrated blend of vegetation and earth sciences, climatology, cartography and ecology with a range of new technologies and methodologies including computer-based geographic information systems, remote sensing and simulation modelling. This publication defines the current `state-of-the-art' of ELC. It provides particular insight into the role of ELC in current and future forest resource planning and management, and emphasizes its application and usefulness at various spatial scales, for a variety of geographic locations, and under a range of management scenarios/constraints. The book is an invaluable and substantial reference source about the current trends in ELC and will be of particular value to ecologists, foresters, geographers, resource managers, wildlife biologists, GIS and remote sensing specialists, educators and students.

Book Simulating Forest Growth and Carbon Dynamics of the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in Northeastern Ontario

Download or read book Simulating Forest Growth and Carbon Dynamics of the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in Northeastern Ontario written by Xiaolu Zhou and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assessed the temporal and spatial variability in forest growth & carbon storage to provide a comprehensive estimate of the carbon budget for boreal ecosystems in the Lake Abitibi Model Forest in northern Ontario. In the study, stand-level growth & carbon dynamics were simulated using TRIPLEX1.0, a new process-based forest growth & carbon dynamics model. The model was recently calibrated & tested using field measurements collected in Ontario, and was validated using 49 permanent sample plots in the Model Forest. Simulated carbon storage (net primary productivity, forest biomass, and soil carbon) are compared with field data and results from other studies on Canadian boreal forests. Estimates of carbon based on stand variables & analysis of the net carbon balance suggest whether the Model Forest ecosystem was acting as a carbon sink. The results provide information needed by local forest managers to develop ecological & carbon-based indicators and to monitor the sustainability of their forest ecosystems.

Book Development of a Landscape Ecological Model for Management of Ontario Forests

Download or read book Development of a Landscape Ecological Model for Management of Ontario Forests written by Larry E. Band and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1994 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work accomplished under Phase 2 of a project to develop and apply a landscape ecological model to aid in the understanding and management of Ontario forest ecosystems. The first year concentrated on the initial development and testing of a data and simulation system to predict and understand forest productivity and water cycling for a test area in the Temagami District of Ontario. The second year's efforts further extended and developed the landscape model for three additional ecosystems along a significant east-west gradient across the province. The sites were chosen to provide both a broad geographic range in location and biome and a set of comprehensive measurements of forest productivity and hydrology for model diagnosis and validation. The three areas incorporated into the east-west gradient are the Petawawa National Forest Institute near Pembroke, the Turkey Lakes Experimental Watershed north of Sault Ste. Marie, and the area around Rinker Lake, north of Thunder Bay. Modifications and improvements were implemented in the digital terrain analysis methods, in the user interface, and in specific process modules.
