Book Integrated Nutrient Management INM in a Sustainable Rice Wheat Cropping System

Download or read book Integrated Nutrient Management INM in a Sustainable Rice Wheat Cropping System written by Anil Mahajan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is the main occupation in India and about 75% of its population depends directly or indirectly on agriculture for their livelihood. It is the dominant sector that contributes 18% of the gross domestic product. Thus, agriculture is the foundation of the Indian economy. The maximum share of Indian exports is also from the agriculture sector. As the population of the country is increasing trem- dously, approximately at the rate of 19 million every year over the existing popu- tion of more than 1 billion (approximately 1. 18 billion), the food grain production must necessarily be increased. This can be done by increasing crop production to match the population growth rate of 2. 2% per annum, which is expected to stabilize at 1. 53 billion around 2050. There is no doubt that the Green Revolution in India during the late 1960s brought self-sufficiency in food grain production, mainly through the increase in rice and wheat crop yields – the two main crops of the country which play an important role from food security point of view. However, the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, and the neglect of organic manures for these crops, has resulted in the deterioration of physical, chemical and biological health of the ri- and wheat-growing soils. Owing to the deterioration of the health of these soils, the productivity of the rice–wheat cropping system has now either got reduced or in some places has become constant for the last decade.

Book Agronomic Rice Practices and Postharvest Processing

Download or read book Agronomic Rice Practices and Postharvest Processing written by Deepak Kumar Verma and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses three important agricultural aspects of rice: physical characteristics, physico-chemical characteristics, and the organoleptic aspects. Divided into sections, the book first examines recent trends and advances for higher production and quality improvement, focusing on the effects of climate on rice cultivation and climate-resilient agricultural practices in rice. The volume goes on to cover nutrient management for rice production and quality improvement. Chapters also address weed management and postharvest processing practices for improved rice production. With chapters from renowned scientists, researchers, and professors, this book will be a useful reference for rice researchers working in the area of agronomic practices, postharvest processing, and quality improvement in rice.

Book Sustainable Management of Soil and Environment

Download or read book Sustainable Management of Soil and Environment written by Ram Swaroop Meena and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-02 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fertilizers have been used extensively around the globe since the Green Revolution, due to the high subsidies. However, extensive fertilizer use exacerbates soil degradation and causes yield stagnation, and as a result threatens food security and soil sustainability, especially in developing countries. This means that sustainable soil and environmental management are vital to provide food and nutritional security for present and future generations. This has led to the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS) declaring 2015-2024 the International Decade of Soils. This book focuses on the impact of sustainable management of soil and environment on improving the functioning of soil-ecosystems and agronomic productivity, and also discusses food security, nutrient cycling, recent advances in INM technologies, eco-friendly cultivation, agricultural practices to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as conservation agriculture and its effects, and strategies for soil sustainability. Offering a comprehensive overview of management in the context of the sustainability of soil and the agroecosystems that it supports, it demonstrates the options available and provides insights into restoring soil health and matching soil nutrient supply with crop demand to ensure nutritional security in an eco-friendly environment.
