Book excerpt: As schools change their teaching methods to incorporate technology and specifically online learning environments, students can sometimes feel overwhelmed because they do not know how to use it or that is not properly designed for student use. Teachers need to be more aware of how well the students can use the websites and various pieces of technology. Schools believe that by providing students with the ability to access educational content online, they are enabling students of all abilities to learn. Universal design for learning (UDL) tries to help educators change students into experts and prepared learners by ?providing teachers with a framework for understanding how to create lessons and content that meets the needs of all learners from the start? (?UDL guidelines: Version 2.0,?2012, para.2). This project focuses on the accessibility and usability of online learning environments. With guidelines from the government website on usability, the Website Accessibility Initiative, Universal Design for Learning, and the study of previous research performed on accessibility and usability, I will attempt to increase teachers’ awareness of these guidelines and incorporate them into the online learning environment. With the creation of a rubric and essential concepts of accessibility and usability, teachers can assess their online learning environments and gain student’s reactions about the usability and accessibility of the technology using student surveys.
