Book Breastfeeding Knowledge Attitudes Previous Exposure and Future Intention of Undergraduate Students in Honduras

Download or read book Breastfeeding Knowledge Attitudes Previous Exposure and Future Intention of Undergraduate Students in Honduras written by Mariana Rendon and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: In Honduras, over 95% of mothers initiate breastfeeding but less than a third meet the World Health Organization recommendation to exclusively breastfeed through 6 months. Understanding the breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, prior exposure and future intent of young adults may provide significant insight into the relatively low exclusivity rates reported in the Honduran population and may be important targets for future interventions in this population. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to explore these concepts among young adults in Honduras. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe, identify, and explore any relationships between demographics, breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, prior exposure, and future breastfeeding intent in a sample of undergraduate students in Honduras. Methods: This was an exploratory, cross-sectional study, conducted with a convenience sample of 283 undergraduate students attending a major public university in Honduras in February 2015. Results: Honduran undergraduate students have moderate breastfeeding knowledge, neutral breastfeeding attitudes, high prior breastfeeding exposure, and high intention to breastfeed or support their partners to breastfeed in the future. Knowledge on the health benefits of breastfeeding was low. Less than a third of students knew that women who have breastfed have a lower risk of breast cancer (28.8%) and only 47.9% knew that breastfeeding helps prevent respiratory infections in the infant. Slightly over half of students considered breastfeeding in public to be acceptable (53.4%) and less than a third reported that seeing a woman breastfeeding in public would make them uncomfortable (28.2%). Over three-fourths of students (82.0%) expressed an intention to breastfeed or support a partner to breastfeed in the future, though female students were more likely to report this intention than male students (88.8% vs. 74.4%, p

Book Breastfeeding Knowledge and Attitudes of Nursing Students Toward Hispanic Clients

Download or read book Breastfeeding Knowledge and Attitudes of Nursing Students Toward Hispanic Clients written by Rona Tagayun and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extensive research has proven the mutual benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and infants. Although this is an important health topic worldwide, there is evidence that health professionals lack the skills and knowledge to properly guide and support lactating women. In addition, there is a significant gap that needs to be bridged in breastfeeding practices among Hispanics. The purpose of this study was to explore the breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes among nursing students towards Hispanic clients."--Excerpt from abstract.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this project was to assess nursing students' knowledge of breastfeeding guidelines and benefits. A nonexperimental, descriptive design was used with a convenience sample of 40 students enrolled in a nursing program at a southern California university. Participants took a modified Breastfeeding Knowledge Questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 17 knowledge items covering the benefits and guidelines of breastfeeding. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze student knowledge and to test for differences in knowledge levels. Of a possible 17 points, the mean knowledge score was 14.08 1.56. There was a significant difference between male and female students' knowledge scores (p = .023). More than one third of the students scored below 80%. Improving breastfeeding education in nursing curricula is necessary to prepare future nurses with essential knowledge about breastfeeding.

Book Exploration of Breastfeeding Concepts Among Current and Future Parents

Download or read book Exploration of Breastfeeding Concepts Among Current and Future Parents written by Zixin Lou and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives were to explore breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, and intention of future parents, and to investigate indicators and causes of perceived insufficient milk (PIM) supply among Chinese mothers. Objectives were accomplished using a cross-sectional study design. Two questionnaires were developed, one targeting Chinese and US undergraduates, and a second targeting Chinese mothers. In total, 597 undergraduates (395 Chinese; 202 US) and 392 Chinese mothers participated in the study. Data cleaning resulted in a final sample size of 572 for undergraduates (383 Chinese; 189 US) and 341 for Chinese mothers. Results showed that undergraduates in both countries possessed some breastfeeding knowledge and expressed similar concerns. These concerns included perceived inconvenience and embarrassment associated with breastfeeding. In general, US students demonstrated a greater knowledge level than their Chinese counterparts. However, Chinese students possessed better attitudes about breastfeeding. For both groups, greater breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes, and having been breastfed as an infant, were associated with a greater likelihood of breastfeeding, or supporting a partner to breastfeed, a future child. The results of the questionnaire administered among Chinese mothers showed that perceived insufficient milk (PIM) supply was a common occurrence, as it was reported by over half of these mothers. In addition, nearly half of those reporting PIM experienced it within 2 days postpartum. Subjective indicators were frequently used by mothers to assess milk quantity, examples of which included not feeling the presence of milk, receiving a hungry look from the infant after a breastfeed, and having an infant that cried after a breastfeed. Objective indicators, such as the number of wet/soiled diapers, were rarely used. Most mothers were unable to explain why they experienced PIM. However, among those who did report perceived reasons for PIM, these were often diet-related, including having a poor appetite or not being able to "eat enough soup". Results from both samples indicate the need to develop culturally relevant interventions to address identified misperceptions of future parents and to assist new mothers in correctly identifying and addressing PIM.

Book Introduction to Psychometric Theory

Download or read book Introduction to Psychometric Theory written by Tenko Raykov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-07 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new text provides a state-of the-art introduction to educational and psychological testing and measurement theory that reflects many intellectual developments of the past two decades. The book introduces psychometric theory using a latent variable modeling (LVM) framework and emphasizes interval estimation throughout, so as to better prepare readers for studying more advanced topics later in their careers. Featuring numerous examples, it presents an applied approach to conducting testing and measurement in the behavioral, social, and educational sciences. Readers will find numerous tips on how to use test theory in today’s actual testing situations. To reflect the growing use of statistical software in psychometrics, the authors introduce the use of Mplus after the first few chapters. IBM SPSS, SAS, and R are also featured in several chapters. Software codes and associated outputs are reviewed throughout to enhance comprehension. Essentially all of the data used in the book are available on the website. In addition instructors will find helpful PowerPoint lecture slides and questions and problems for each chapter. The authors rely on LVM when discussing fundamental concepts such as exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, test theory, generalizability theory, reliability and validity, interval estimation, nonlinear factor analysis, generalized linear modeling, and item response theory. The varied applications make this book a valuable tool for those in the behavioral, social, educational, and biomedical disciplines, as well as in business, economics, and marketing. A brief introduction to R is also provided. Intended as a text for advanced undergraduate and/or graduate courses in psychometrics, testing and measurement, measurement theory, psychological testing, and/or educational and/or psychological measurement taught in departments of psychology, education, human development, epidemiology, business, and marketing, it will also appeal to researchers in these disciplines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s natural... It’s unsightly... It’s normal... It’s dangerous. To breastfeed or not? For millions of women around the world, this personal decision is influenced by numerous social, cultural, and health factors. Infant Feeding Practices is the first book to delve into these factors from a global perspective, revealing striking similarities and differences from country to country. Dispatches from Asia, Australia, Africa, the U.K., and the U.S. explore as wide a gamut of salient issues affecting feeding practices as traditional beliefs about colostrums, “breast is best” campaigns, partner attitudes, workplace culture, direct government intervention, and the pressure to be a “good mother.” Throughout these informative pages, women are seen balancing innovation and tradition to nurture healthy, thriving babies. A sampling of topics covered: • Policy versus practice in infant feeding. • Infant feeding in the age of AIDS. • Managing the lactating body: the view from the U.S. • Motherhood, work, and feeding. • The effects of migration on infant feeding. • From breastfeeding tradition to optimal breastfeeding practice. Infant Feeding Practices is a first-of-its-kind resource for researchers and practioners in maternal and child health, public health, global health, and cultural anthropology seeking empirical findings and culturally diverse information on this sensitive issue.

Book Latching on to Breastfeeding

Download or read book Latching on to Breastfeeding written by Chelsea Lysette Ortiz and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breastfeeding is the most natural form of infant feeding to organically enhance an infant’s immune system from birth (CDC, 2019; UNICEF, 2017). Breast milk has been associated with lower risks of acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, certain cancers, and postpartum depression (WHO, 2019). Data indicated an estimated annual $13 billion in savings associated with breastfeeding, with more than 900 preventable deaths (Bartick & Reinhold, 2010). Current breastfeeding duration rates fall below Healthy People 2020 (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2014) goals despite its biological and economic benefits. Registered nurses make up 70% of the healthcare workforce and are a constant source of support and guidance during the prenatal and postpartum period of maternity. Because of the short and long term benefits to both mother and infant through breastfeeding, coupled with the vital role nurses play in a mother’s breastfeeding duration, it was important to evaluate current and future nurse’s knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs on breastfeeding. Using data through a self-reported survey, this study investigated the breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of student nurses. Results indicated low levels of breastfeeding knowledge, unfavorable attitudes towards breastfeeding, and favorable beliefs about breastfeeding among nursing students. Independent-t tests and One-Way ANOVA tests were conducted.
