Book Immigration Policy and the People of Latin America

Download or read book Immigration Policy and the People of Latin America written by Bryce W. Ashby and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-20 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking on historical events in Latin America as its starting point, this book examines the migration of its inhabitants to the United States with case studies from seven nations: Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Venezuela. Combining the disciplines of history and law, the authors explore the economic and historical challenges present in each nation that force "out" migration, including corruption, historical exploitation, racism, unequal/unfair trade arrangements, and the oftentimes unilateral, exploitative operations of multinational corporations. Readers will learn about the contemporary socio/political and economic realities of the seven sending nations and understand the complexity of immigration laws (as passed by the Congress), executive actions taken by individual presidents in the United States, and some state initiatives. They will hear the voices of immigrants themselves, as well as those who have stayed behind or been deported from the United States back to their home nations. This book will be of interest to students of Latin American history, as well as US history and politics.

Book Territorial Disputes and State Sovereignty

Download or read book Territorial Disputes and State Sovereignty written by Jorge E. Núñez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, this book opens new ground for research on territorial disputes. Many sovereignty conflicts remain unresolved around the world. Current solutions in law, political science and international relations generally prove problematic to at least one of the agents part of these differences. Arguing that disputes are complex, multi-layered and multi-faceted, this book brings together a global, inter-disciplinary view of territorial disputes. The book reviews the key conceptual elements central to legal and political sciences with regards to territorial disputes: state, sovereignty and self-determination. Looking at some of the current long-standing disputes worldwide, it compares and contrasts the many issues at stake and the potential remedies currently available in order to assess why some territorial disputes remain unresolved. Finally, it offers a set of guidelines for dispute settlement and conflict resolution that current remedies fail to provide. It will appeal to students and scholars working in international relations, legal theory and jurisprudence, public international law and political sciences.

Book Remembrance History and Justice

Download or read book Remembrance History and Justice written by Vladimir Tismaneanu and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century has left behind a painful and complicated legacy of massive trauma, monstrous crimes, radical social engineering, or collective/individual guilt syndromes that were often the premises for and the specters haunting the process of democratization in the various societies that emerged out of these profoundly de-structuring contexts. The present manuscript is a state of the art reassessment and analysis of how the interplay between memory, history, and justice generates insight that is multifariously relevant for comprehending the present and future of democracy without becoming limited to a Europe-centric framework of understanding. The manuscript is structured on three complementary and interconnected trajectories: the public use of history, politics of memory, and transitional justice. Key words 1. Europe, Eastern—Politics and government—1989– 2. Collective memory—Europe,Eastern. 3. Memory—Political aspects—Europe, Eastern. 4. Democratization—Social aspects—Europe, Eastern. 5. Download or read book Posts and Pasts written by Alfred J. Lopez and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2001-05-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Posts and Pasts: A Theory of Postcolonialism, Alfred J. Lopez argues for a formulation of postcolonial studies which diverges in three significant ways from current academic and institutional practices: 1) the postcolonial as diasporic, constituted by a series of dispersed and irregular criticisms not at all containable within a single set of parameters, whether historical, geographical, or socioeconomic; 2) the postcolonial as a distinct ontological moment in the life of a nation or people, in which it conceives itself as doubly haunted--on the one hand by the "memory in advance" of a collective national future and on the other by its colonial past; and 3) the postcolonial as a distinct phenomenological moment, a radical break in the history of a relation between lords and bonds-women and -men. Going further than previous studies to address the postcolonial as a diasporic body of texts and discourses, it looks at a remarkable variety of writers—Joseph Conrad, Wilson Harris, Jose Marti, Edward Kamau Brathwaite, Michelle Cliff, J. M. Coetzee, Franz Fanon, Gabriel Marcia Marquez, and Salman Rushdie.

ABC-CLIO offers the finest comprehensive reference available on an essential topic in modern world history. Across four volumes, Nations and Nationalism: A Global Historical Overview covers all aspects of nationalism, in all parts of the world, from the time of the French Revolution to the present day. Nations and Nationalism helps students, researchers, and other interested readers explore national identities and nationalistic movements in historical context. Organized chronologically, its four volumes combine thematic essays on different characteristics of nationalism with case studies of key historical developments involving specific nations at specific times. The encyclopedia focuses on Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia, with featured coverage of nationalist cultural creations, including literature, music, symbols, and mythologies.
