Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas Phase Ion Chemistry, Volume 2 covers the advances in gas phase ion chemistry. The book discusses the stabilities of positive ions from equilibrium gas-phase basicity measurements; the experimental methods used to determine molecular electron affinities, specifically photoelectron spectroscopy, photodetachment spectroscopy, charge transfer, and collisional ionization; and the gas-phase acidity scale. The text also describes the basis of the technique of chemical ionization mass spectrometry; the energetics and mechanisms of unimolecular reactions of positive ions; and the photodissociation of gas-phase ions. The applications of molecular beam techniques to the study of ion-molecule collisions; as well as the variational treatment of charge transfer reactions are also encompassed. Chemists and biochemists will find the book invaluable.

Book Aspects of Gas phase Anion Spectroscopy

Download or read book Aspects of Gas phase Anion Spectroscopy written by Marcus Kettner and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a combined experimental and theoretical approach towards anion spectroscopy. Motivated by the rich chemistry occurring in the Earth's atmosphere, the first part of thesis describes the design, construction and implementation of an improved anion photoelectron spectrometer based on the velocity map imaging (VMI) principle. This instrument was attached to an existing time-offlight mass spectrometer and conventional anion photoelectron spectrometer. When coupled with a tunable laser, the new spectrometer will allow for high-resolution studies similar to the slow-electron velocity map imaging (SEVI) experiments described by Neumark and co-workers. The spectrometer has been constructed, and preliminary tests have been undertaken. Complementary to the instrument development, a theoretical methodology for the prediction of electron affinities and photoelectron spectra based on the W3-F12 protocol published by Karton and Martin was established. The methodology is applied to methanal-oxide, cis-ethanal-oxide and trans-ethanaloxide yielding electron affinities of 0.57 eV, 0.18 eV and 0.34 eV, respectively. For all of these molecules as well as their anions, total atomisation energies, harmonic frequencies and heats of formation (at 0 K and 298 K) were calculated alongside. Finally, a relatively inexpensive computational analysis of the anharmonic frequencies and intensities for methanal-oxide resulting from vibrational second-order perturbation theory (VPT2) CCSD(T) calculations with different basis sets were compared against experimental IR data as well as high-level vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) calculations. Surprisingly, the VPT2 calculations are on a par with computationally more expensive vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) calculations and hence the first simulation of a high-level IR spectrum of cis-ethanal-oxide is presented.

Book Two Studies in Gas Phase Ion Spectroscopy

Download or read book Two Studies in Gas Phase Ion Spectroscopy written by Matthew J. Simpson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis Matthew Simpson reportstwo areas of work in gas ion spectroscopy, each investigation in itself worthy of a PhD. The first study uses tunable vacuum-ultraviolet radiation from a synchrotron to identify negative ions from twenty four photoexcited polyatomic molecules in the gas phase. From these experiments, Matthew collects a vast amount of data and summarises and reviews ion-pair formation from polyatomic molecules. The second study is on selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry. Matthew investigates the reactions of cations and anions with ethene, monofluoroethene, 1,1-difluoroethene and tetrafluoroethene. In this study Matthew tries to explain why certain products are formed preferentially over other products at a microscopic level of understanding. The data recorded in this thesis form the most comprehensive collection of information about anion formation and are the basis of a review and numerous articles in specialist journals.

Download or read book Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry written by David H. Russell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of gas phase inorganic ion chemistry is relatively new; the early studies date back approximately twenty years, but there has been intense interest and development in the field in the last ten years. As with much of modern chemistry, the growth in gas phase inorganic ion chemistry can be traced to the development of instrumentation and new experimental methods. Studies in this area require sophisticated instruments and sample introduc tion/ ionization methods, and often these processes are complicated by the need for state-selecting (or collisionally stabilizing) the reactive species in order to assign the chemistry unequivocally. At the present level of experimental development, a wide range of experiments on diverse ionic systems are possible and many detailed aspects of the chemistry can be studied. Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry focuses on the reactions of metal ions and metal clusters, and on the study of these species using the available modern spectroscopic methods. Three of the twelve chapters cover the chemistry of ionic monometal transition metal ions and the chemistry of these species with small diatomics and model organics. Two of the chapters focus on the studies of the chemical and physical properties of (primarily) transition metal clusters, and these chapters review experimental methods and capabilities. Two chapters also deal with the chemistry of transition metal carbonyl clusters, and these chapters address issues important to cluster growth and activation as well as the characterization of such species.

  • Author : Eugen Illenberger

Download or read book Gaseous Molecular Ions written by Eugen Illenberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the matter in our solar system, and, probably, within the whole universe, exists in the form of ionized particles. On the other hand, in our natural environ ment, gaseous matter generally consists of neutral atoms and molecules. Only under certain conditions, such as within the path oflightning or in several technical devices (e. g. gas discharges, rocket engines, etc. ) will some of the atoms and molecules be ionized. It is also believed that the chemistry of the earth's troposphere predomi nantly proceeds via reactions between neutral particles. (The complex system of atmospheric chemistry will be treated in one of the forthcoming volumes to this series. ) Why, then, are ions considered so important that hundreds oflaboratories all over the world (including some of the most prestigious) are involved in research pro grams on ions, covering many different facets, from biochemistry to physics? One may obtain as many different answers as there are research groups busy in this field. There is, however, one simple, common feature which makes it attractive to work with ions: since they carry one or more net elementary charges, they can easily be gui ded, focused or separated by appropriate electric and magnetic fields, and, last but not least, they can easily be detected. Apart from these advantages, which are welcome and appreciated by the researcher, the study of molecular ions can provide insight into very fundamental aspects of the general behavior of molecules.

Book Gas Phase Metal Reactions

Download or read book Gas Phase Metal Reactions written by A. Fontijn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book brings together, for the first time, all aspects of reactions of metallic species in the gas phase and gives an up-to-date overview of the field. Reactions covered include those of atomic, other free radical and transient neutral species, as well as ions. Experimental and theoretical work is reviewed and the efforts to establish a closer link between these approaches are discussed. The field is mainly approached from a fundamental point-of-view, but the applied problems which have helped stimulate the interest are pointed out and form the major subject of the final chapters. These emphasize the competition between purely gas-phase and gas-surface reactions.
