Book Influence of Temperature and Microstructure on the Fatigue Behaviour in the Threshold Regime for a Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Download or read book Influence of Temperature and Microstructure on the Fatigue Behaviour in the Threshold Regime for a Super Duplex Stainless Steel written by S. Hansson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack propagation behaviour of a super duplex stainless steel in the near threshold regime at -50°C, 20°C (RT) and 150°C has been studied. The fatigue threshold values of the stress intensity factor range and the effective threshold value of this material are higher at -50°C and 150°C than at RT. The closure threshold value is also smaller at RT than at -50°C, but comparable with that at 150°C. The material aged at 475°C for 3 hours shows similar effective threshold value, but a smaller closure threshold value. Crack propagation mismatch at the interface of the two phases and brittle to ductile fracture transition in the material at -50°C or in the aged material at RT were observed, and possible mechanisms were discussed.

Download or read book Fatigue of Materials written by Subra Suresh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-29 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading researcher in the field, this revised and updated second edition of a highly successful book provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, non-metals and composites. The author discusses the principles of cyclic deformation, crack initiation and crack growth by fatigue, covering both microscopic and continuum aspects. The book begins with discussions of cyclic deformation and fatigue crack initiation in monocrystalline and polycrystalline ductile alloys as well as in brittle and semi-/non-crystalline solids. Total life and damage-tolerant approaches are then introduced in metals, non-metals and composites followed by more advanced topics. The book includes an extensive bibliography and a problem set for each chapter, together with worked-out example problems and case studies. This will be an important reference for anyone studying fracture and fatigue in materials science and engineering, mechanical, civil, nuclear and aerospace engineering, and biomechanics.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics of Several Austenitic Stainless Steels at High Temperature

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Characteristics of Several Austenitic Stainless Steels at High Temperature written by P. Shahinian and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resistance to fatigue crack growth of annealed stainless steels, Types 304, 316, 321, and 348, was determined at 77, 800, and 1100 F (25, 427, and 593 C). Crack growth rates were related to the stress intensity factor range (?K). With increase in temperature the rate of crack growth for a given (?K) increased. At room temperature the four steels had the same resistance to crack growth. However, at high temperatures crack growth became sensitive to the differences in composition and properties among the steels. At 1100 F (593 C), Type 348 steel had the greatest resistance to crack growth and Type 316 the lowest resistance. As a result, fatigue life was 3.4 times longer for Type 348 steel over Type 316 steel at this temperature. The characteristics of high-temperature fatigue crack growth were examined.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Different Stainless Steels in Pressurized Water Reactor Environments

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Different Stainless Steels in Pressurized Water Reactor Environments written by C. Amzallag and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program has been conducted in order to determine the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) curves of different stainless steels for nuclear pressure vessels and pipings in pressurized water reactor environments and to define reference fatigue crack growth rate curves for these materials. The parameters studied are: the steel structure, the load ratio (R), and the water chemistry. A slight, but clear effect of environment was observed for the five steels studied. The paper presents the FCGR curves and the fractographic examinations for the different testing conditions and stresses the differences between FCGR behavior of stainless steels and low-alloy steels.

Book Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Crack Propagation in Some Steels

Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Crack Propagation in Some Steels written by Saurindranath Majumdar and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a previous report, a fatigue crack propagation model was analyzed by considering fatigue crack propagation as a sequence of fatigue crack initiation events. This permitted correlation to be made between the fatigue crack growth resistance and low cycle fatigue properties of metals. Four steels were tested for low cycle fatigue behavior at the University of Illinois. Good correlation was obtained between the theoretically predicted crack propagation rate based on the measured low cycle fatigue properties of the four metals and experimentally observed crack propagation rates that were reported in the literature. Further, good estimates of crack propagation rates can be obtained on the basis of static tensile properties of the metals alone where cyclic properties are not available. (Author).

Download or read book Physical Aspects of Fracture written by Elisabeth Bouchaud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main scope of this Cargese NATO Advanced Study Institute (June 5-17 2000) was to bring together a number of international experts, covering a large spectrum of the various Physical Aspects of Fracture. As a matter of fact, lecturers as well as participants were coming from various scientific communities: mechanics, physics, materials science, with the common objective of progressing towards a multi-scale description of fracture. This volume includes papers on most materials of practical interest: from concrete to ceramics through metallic alloys, glasses, polymers and composite materials. The classical fields of damage and fracture mechanisms are addressed (critical and sub-critical quasi-static crack propagation, stress corrosion, fatigue, fatigue-corrosion . . . . as well as dynamic fracture). Brittle and ductile fractures are considered and a balance has been carefully kept between experiments, simulations and theoretical models, and between the contributions of the various communities. New topics in damage and fracture mechanics - the effect of disorder and statistical aspects, dynamic fracture, friction and fracture of interfaces - were also explored. This large overview on the Physical Aspects of Fracture shows that the old barriers built between the different scales will soon "fracture". It is no more unrealistic to imagine that a crack initiated through a molecular dynamics description could be propagated at the grain level thanks to dislocation dynamics included in a crystal plasticity model, itself implemented in a finite element code. Linking what happens at the atomic scale to fracture of structures as large as a dam is the new emerging challenge.
