Book Devonian Events and Correlations

Download or read book Devonian Events and Correlations written by R. T. Becker and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Devonian was a peculiar period, characterized by simplified plate tectonic configurations, climatic overheating and widely flooded continents. The bloom of fishes and ammonoids, extensive reef complexes, and the conquest of land indicate major biosphere innovations, punctuated by many global events, including two of the biggest mass extinctions. The Devonian was the first system for which subdivisions were formally defined. This was achieved by significant advances in pelagic biostratigraphy. The chronostratigraphic framework and interdisciplinary techniques allow us to correlate intervals or sudden events across facies boundaries, in order to reconstruct the sedimentary and evolutionary history of the system with highest precision. This volume honors the lifetime stratigraphic achievements of Michael Robert House (1930-2002). Based on case studies from Europe, North Africa and North America, it shows how the combination of biostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy and event stratigraphy can contribute to a much deeper understanding of both regional and global environmental change.

Book Understanding Late Devonian and Permian Triassic Biotic and Climatic Events

Download or read book Understanding Late Devonian and Permian Triassic Biotic and Climatic Events written by Jeff Over and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Devonian and Permian-Triassic intervals are among the most dynamic episodes of Earth history, marked by large secular changes in continental ecosystems, dramatic fluctuations in ocean oxygenation, major phases of biotic turnover, volcanism, bolide impact events, and rapid fluctuations in stable isotope systems and sea level. This volume highlights contributions from a broad range of geological sub-disciplines currently striving to understand these critical intervals of geologically rapid, global-scale changes. * Provides updated, current models for the mid-Late Devonian and Permian-Triassic mass extinction episodes * Highlights several new analytical approaches for developing quantitative datasets * Takes an integrated approach presenting datasets from a broad range of sub-disciplines

Book Palaeogeography and Palaeobiogeography Biodiversity in Space and Time

Download or read book Palaeogeography and Palaeobiogeography Biodiversity in Space and Time written by Paul Upchurch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biogeography represents one of the most complex and challenging aspects of macroevolutionary research, requiring input from both the earth and life sciences. Palaeogeographic reconstruction is frequently carried out by researchers with backgrounds in geology and palaeontology, who are less likely to be familiar with the latest biogeographic techniques: conversely, biogeographic methods are often devised by neontologists who may be less familiar with the fossil record, stratigraphy, and palaeogeography. Palaeogeography and Palaeobiogeography: Biodiversity in Space and Time bridges the gap between these two communities of researchers, who work on the same issues but typically use different types of data. The book covers a range of topics, and reflects some of the major overall questions in the field such as: Which approaches are best suited to reconstructing biogeographic histories under a range of circumstances? How do we maximize the use of organismal and earth sciences data to improve our understanding of events in earth history? How well do analytical techniques devised for researching the biogeography of extant organisms perform in the fossil record? Can alternative biodiversity metrics, particularly those based on morphological measurements, enhance our understanding of biogeographic patterns and processes? This book approaches palaeobiogeography with coverage of technological applications and detailed case studies. It spans a wide selection of overlapping and integrative disciplines, including evolutionary theory, vicariance biogeography, extinctions, and the philosophical aspects of palaeogeography. It also highlights new technological innovations and applications for research. Presenting a unique discussion of both palaeogeography and palaeobiogeography in one volume, this book focuses both historically and philosophically on the interface between geology, climate, and organismal distribution.

Book Magill s Survey of Science Physical properties of minerals

Download or read book Magill s Survey of Science Physical properties of minerals written by Frank Northen Magill and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Survey makes accessible the core knowledge of the sciences to curious readers with no special preparation. Within the 377 articles here, 141 cover the major subfields of physical geology, 26 treat areas of economic geology, from essential minerals and other earth resources to the variety of ways man harnesses geothermal, wind, ocean, solar, and nuclear power. Thirty articles examine a range of issues in geochemistry. Geophysics is given full coverage in 35 articles. The planet's history, as well as its impact on the development of life and various early life forms, is explored in 22 articles on fossils, ice ages, dinosaurs, mass extinctions, and evolution. Water is examined in all its forms and sources in 27 articles. There are 36 articles on the solar system, eight on major mountain ranges, soils are done in eight, the atmosphere in 18. Averaging seven pages, articles begin with ready-reference matter and a list of principal terms. A summary section forms the major part of each article, providing a description of either the phenomenon or the methodology. "Context," the concluding section of each essay, presents the conclusions, applications, and implications derived from investigation of the topic. Finally, an annotated, selected bibliography directs the reader to sources that are accessible to the nonspecialist. Cross-references lists articles that offer additional information on the same or a related topic.
