Download or read book Management of Natural Forests of Dry Tropical Zones written by R. Bellefontaine and published by Fao. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses the topic of management of natural forests in tropical dry zones. In the first part, the document reviews relevant issues, the nature and diversity of these forest formations and the biological, socio-economic and human factors that affect their present evolution. It then introduces the concept of management and the fundamentals and principles underpinning it. An assessment of the tools available is made in the second part, which ends with considerations on prospects, indications and guidelines to help establish best practices. The document also features case studies exploring promising breakthroughs in the subject. The document has been long expected by many technicians involved in the management, conservation and sustainable development of forests, on which many people in Africa, Asia and Latin America depend.

Download or read book The Vegetation of Manyara written by Paul E. Loth and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on scale dependency, both temporal and spatial, of vegetation changes. At different spatial levels, starting from the level of the individual plant, via patch or stand, plant community, and, finally, at the level of ecosystems, the changes in the vegetation of an East African savanna in the Rift Valley are related to the time span considered. The dominant tree Acacia tortilis in Lake Manyara National Park plays an important role in plant-herbivore relationships, and was therefore taken as a typical case in this respect.
Download or read book Soil and Water Management in Spate Irrigation Systems in Eritrea written by Mehreteab Tesfai Hadera and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spate irrigation has been practised over 100 years in the Red Sea coastal zone of Eritrea such as the Sheeb area. Main problem of the spate irrigation system is water shortage caused by irregular rainfall in the highlands of Eritrea and breaching of the irrigation structures by destructive big floods. Annually, a tremendous amount of soil with nutrients is eroded from the adjacent highlands, transported by seasonal streams (wadis) and deposited on the lowlands in the irrigated fields. The dominant types of soils of Sheeb area are the Fluvisols, which have good physical and chemical properties. The annual sedimentation on the spate fields enables the farmers to harvest a crop without application of fertilisers. A nutrient balance study revealed no soil mining in the spate fields. Farmers in Sheeb could obtain a more uniform water distribution over their fields with better levelling. Of the total area of Sheeb (8,000 ha), about 3,160 ha of land was classified as highly and moderately suitable for spate irrigation. When the flood diversion structures (at wadis Laba and Maiule) are made more permanent, an additional 2, 000 ha of land can be irrigated. In general, spate irrigation production system is a 'cost effective' system if the irrigation structures are properly maintained at low cost and if the fields receive enough water and nutrients.
Download or read book Crop Residue Management in Relation to Sustainable Land Use written by Moumini Savadogo and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential contribution of crop residues to ruminant feeding in the four agro-ecological zones distinguished in Burkina Faso was estimated, applying the Java Program developed at the Animal Production Systems Group of Wageningen University (Chapter 2). The number of animals that can be fed and their production were estimated on the basis of availability and quality (digestibility and N content) of crop residues (cereal stovers and legume haulms).
