Excerpt: ...as being pretty near the mark: At three years from the first crop, from 5 in. to 6 in.; at four years, from 6 in. to 7 in.; at five years, from 7 in. to 8 in.; at six years, and for all the following years, from 8 in. to 9 in. These differences in the heights of the lower mounds are dependent on the size of the stooL The stronger the stool the greater the depth of earth above it that it will support, seeing that the larger and stronger the heads the more easily can they penetrate the superincumbent soil, whilst a young and comparatively weak shoot will become sickly during the process of slowly pushing itself through, besides which, it will most likely become so deformed as to be unfit for market. By properly earthing up we may obtain heads of the following lengths: third year, 9 in.; fifth year, 10 in.; sixth year. 11 in.; and all the other years from 11 in. to 12 in. For making the lesser mounds we use the narrow or broad hoe, taking care to use fine open mould which has been well exposed to the atmosphere, so that the young heads may push through it easily. If it contains any stones they must be carefully sifted out and not allowed to remain in the plantation, for reasons already stated We must also be careful not to allow any manure to remain in these lesser mounds. In order to gain an exact notion of the way in which these lesser mounds are formed, we have only to glance at fig. 6, where we have the section of an Asparagus plantation before these lower mounds have been formed. The stools are at the bottom of the hollows T T, and the upper mounds A A are at their greatest height, whilst after the operation of earthing up the lesser mounds has taken place, the aspect of the ground becomes completely Fig. 6.--Asparagus trenches before...

Book Landscape as Infrastructure

Download or read book Landscape as Infrastructure written by Pierre Belanger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As ecology becomes the new engineering, the projection of landscape as infrastructure—the contemporary alignment of the disciplines of landscape architecture, civil engineering, and urban planning— has become pressing. Predominant challenges facing urban regions and territories today—including shifting climates, material flows, and population mobilities, are addressed and strategized here. Responding to the under-performance of master planning and over-exertion of technological systems at the end of twentieth century, this book argues for the strategic design of "infrastructural ecologies," describing a synthetic landscape of living, biophysical systems that operate as urban infrastructures to shape and direct the future of urban economies and cultures into the 21st century. Pierre Bélanger is Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and Co-Director of the Master in Design Studies Program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. As part of the Department of Landscape Architecture and the Advansed Studies Program, Bélanger teaches and coordinates graduate courses on the convergence of ecology, infrastructure and urbanism in the interrelated fields of design, planning and engineering. Dr. Bélanger is author of the 35th edition of the Pamphlet Architecture Series from Princeton Architectural Press, GOING LIVE: from States to Systems (pa35.net), co-editor with Jennifer Sigler of the 39th issue of Harvard Design Magazine, Wet Matter, and co-author of the forthcoming volume ECOLOGIES OF POWER: Mapping Military Geographies & Logistical Landscapes of the U.S. Department of Defense. As a landscape architect and urbanist, he is the recipient of the 2008 Canada Prix de Rome in Architecture and the Curator for the Canada Pavilion ad Canadian Exhibition, "EXTRACTION," at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale (extraction.ca).

Therefore, the subject matter has been pre sented in an integrated way to correlate it with these diverse disciplines. This book has been prepared as a text for this course. The most recent Cytogenetics text was published in 1972, and rapidly developing research in this field makes a new one urgently needed. This book includes many aspects of Cytogenetics and related fields and is written for the college student as well as for the researcher. It is recommended that the student should have taken preparatory courses in Principles of Genetics and Cytol ogy. The content is more than is usually taught during one quar ter of an academic year, thus allowing an instructor to choose what he or she would like to present to a class. This approach also allows the researcher to obtain a broad exposure to this field of biology. References are generously supplied to stimulate orig inal reading on the subject and to give access to valuable sources. The detailed index is intended to be of special assistance to researchers.

Book Golden Age of the Moor

Download or read book Golden Age of the Moor written by Ivan Van Sertima and published by Transaction Pub. This book was released on 1992 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the debt owed by Europe to the Moors for the Renaissance and the significant role played by the African in the Muslim invasions of the Iberian peninsula. While it focuses mainly on Spain and Portugal, it also examines the races and roots of the original North African before the later ethnic mix of the blackamoors and tawny Moors in the medieval period. The study ranges from the Moor in the literature of Cervantes and Shakespeare to his profound influence upon Europe's university system and the diffusion via this system of the ancient and medieval sciences. The Moors are shown to affect not only European mathematics and map-making, agriculture and architecture, but their markets, their music and their machines. The ethnicity of the Moor is re-examined, as is his unique contribution, both as creator and conduit, to the first seminal phase of the industrial revolution.
