Book Uncle Rico s Encore

Download or read book Uncle Rico s Encore written by Peter Bacho and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1950s through the 1970s, blue-collar Filipino Americans, or Pinoys, lived a hardscrabble existence. Immigrant parents endured blatant racism, sporadic violence, and poverty while their US-born children faced more subtle forms of racism, such as the low expectations of teachers and counselors in the public school system. In this collection of autobiographical essays, acclaimed novelist and short-story writer Peter Bacho centers the experiences of the Pinoy generation that grew up in Seattle’s multiethnic neighborhoods, from the Central Area to Beacon Hill to Rainier Valley. He recounts intimate moments of everyday life: fishing with marshmallows at Madison Beach, playing bruising games of basketball at Madrona Park, and celebrating with his uncles in Chinatown as hundreds of workers returned from Alaska canneries in the fall. He also relates vivid stories of defiance and activism, including resistance to the union-busting efforts of the federal government in the 1950s and organizing for decent housing and services for elders in the 1970s. Sharing a life inextricably connected to his community and the generation that came before him, this memoir is a tribute to Filipino Seattle.

Download or read book Fresh Angels and Markings written by M. S. Lynch and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miraculous events occur every day in a Christian's life if they have the "eyes of their heart opened" as St. Paul prayed. Most supernatural events are unseen or not spiritually appraised by the average Christian. But at certain times, God breaks through our rationalizations and unbelief and reveals his Real Presence to us in the most amazing ways. This memoir is based on forty-four years of dreams, visions, angels and demons that were manifested to me, my wife Jane, and other family members. Of course, there were many days and nights when I experienced the "dark night of the soul," where God seemed distant and my spiritual soul was dry and in need of the water that comes from Jesus. This book was started fifteen years ago but I stopped writing as it was not the time to do it as God had other things for me to learn. Then, in 2011 I had a brain stroke caused by a blood clot. I was not able to work as a teacher for six months and I was left with mild paralysis on my right side. God allowed the stroke to happen but also taught me to be thankful for each day as life itself is a miracle! My prayer and hope for you is that you would take seriously the bible account of miracles in the four Gospels and in Luke's account of the early church in the book of Acts in the New Testament. St. Augustine said it best,"NOVERIM TE, NOVERIM ME." This translated is, "May I know you, may I know me."

Book Dreams Hauntings Nightmares and Alternate Realities

Download or read book Dreams Hauntings Nightmares and Alternate Realities written by Mensah Watts and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is beyond our world? That is a question I wanted the answer to so badly while growing up. Little did I know that question was being answered through my forgotten and dismissed childhood experiences, with the king of darkness himself. As I got older, the horrible haunting of my past began to come back to the front of my mind. The evil spirit continued haunting me as I grew older, only he did it in different ways then he did when I was a child. I did not fully remember my childhood haunting until I decided to write down the stories I did remember from childhood to adulthood. It was then that it all started coming back to me. I then realized that the king of darkness had been haunting my life as fare back as I could remember. And as I began talking to people about my stories, I began to realize that people were interested in my stories of the other world and its darkness of many forms. After consulting with a close friend, I was inspired to tell the story and to write this book.

Book City at the End of Time

Download or read book City at the End of Time written by Greg Bear and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Hugo and Nebula award-winning author, Greg Bear is one of science fiction’s most accomplished writers. Bold scientific speculation, riveting plots, and a fierce humanism reflected in characters who dare to dream of better worlds distinguish his work. Now Bear has written a mind-bendingly epic novel that may well be his masterpiece. Do you dream of a city at the end of time? In a time like the present, in a world that may or may not be our own, three young people–Ginny, Jack, and Daniel–dream of a doomed, decadent city of the distant future: the Kalpa. Ginny’s and Jack’s dreams overtake them without warning, leaving their bodies behind while carrying their consciousnesses forward, into the minds of two inhabitants of the Kalpa–a would-be warrior, Jebrassy, and an inquisitive explorer, Tiadba–who have been genetically retro-engineered to possess qualities of ancient humanity. As for Daniel: He dreams of an empty darkness–all that his future holds. But more than dreams link Ginny, Jack, and Daniel. They are fate-shifters, born with the ability to skip like stones across the surface of the fifth dimension, inhabiting alternate versions of themselves. And each guards an object whose origin and purpose are unknown: gnarled, stony artifacts called sum-runners that persist unchanged through all versions of time. Hunted by others with similar powers who seek the sum-runners on behalf of a terrifying, goddess-like entity known as the Chalk Princess, Ginny, Jack, and Daniel are drawn, despite themselves, into an all but hopeless mission to rescue the future–and complete the greatest achievement in human history.

  • Publisher : Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
  • Release : 2018-11-20
  • ISBN : 0544932102
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Why We Dream written by Alice Robb and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A science journalist explores the latest research on dreams—how they work, what they’re for, and how we can reap the benefits. While on a research trip in Peru, science journalist Alice Robb became hooked on lucid dreaming—the uncanny phenomenon in which a sleeping person can realize that they’re dreaming and even control the dreamed experience. Finding these forays both puzzling and exhilarating, Robb dug deeper into the science of dreams at an extremely opportune moment: just as researchers began to understand why dreams exist. They aren’t just random events; they have clear purposes. They help us learn and even overcome psychic trauma. Robb draws on fresh and forgotten research, as well as her experience and that of other dream experts, to show why dreams are vital to our emotional and physical health. She explains how we can remember our dreams better—and why we should. She traces the intricate links between dreaming and creativity, and even offers advice on how we can relish the intense adventure of lucid dreaming for ourselves. Why We Dream is both a cutting-edge examination of the meaning and purpose of our nightly visions and a guide to changing our dream lives in order to make our waking lives richer, healthier, and happier. “Robb offers a welcome antidote to the medicine administered by most sleep gurus.” —New Yorker
