Book Transnational National and Personal Voices

Download or read book Transnational National and Personal Voices written by Begoña Simal González and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The growing heterogeneity of Asian American and Asian diasporic voices has also given rise to variegated theoretical approaches to these literatures. This book attempts to encompass both the increasing awareness of diasporic and transnational issues, and more ""traditional"" analyses of Asian American culture and literature. Thus, the articles in this collection range from investigations into the politics of literary and cinematic representation, to ""digging"" into the past through ""literary archeology"", or analyzing how ""consequential"" bodies can be in recent literature by Asian American and Asian diasporic women writers. The book closes with an interview with critic and writer Shirley Lim, where she insightfully deals with these ""transnational, national, and personal"" issues. Elisabetta Marino is Assistant Professor of English literature at the University of Rome ""Tor Vergata"". Her main fields of interest are Asian American and Asian British literature, children's literature, Italian American literature. Begoña Simal is Assistant Professor of English literature at the Universidade da Coruña, Spain. She has published critical work on both Asian American literature and comparative ""cross-ethnic"" studies. "

Book Voices of Asian Americans in Higher Education

Download or read book Voices of Asian Americans in Higher Education written by Festus E. Obiakor and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of Asian Americans in Higher Education: Unheard Voices is a unique and historical book. Asian Americans are often portrayed as “model minority,” yet their personal and educational experiences are often unheard. In this book, 10 Asian American educators and scholars present realistic pictures of America’s higher education using personal narratives. The contributors in this book come from different regions and teach in different colleges and universities; and coincidentally, they all endure the “outsider” category formerly as students and now as professors and leaders. This “outsider” status can be emotionally overwhelming and psychologically unnerving. This status hampers opportunities for Asian Americans to grow and maximize their fullest potential. Though they develop different strategies to address their “outsider” label, it does not make it comfortable. But, time and time again, they have proven that they can succeed! In this technological age, we must value unending truths as we educate ourselves and others. We hope that this book will be an educational and informational resource for students, administrators, and faculty in higher education and also educational policy makers and stakeholders.

Book excerpt: EXPLORING ASIAN VOICES explores literary and media texts suitable for Asian Studies within the secondary English Curriculum. Texts about Asian places, people, events and traditions give historical information as well as how their culture has been represented over time. Asian poets, writers and film makers often examine issues of migration, exile or the refugee experience and the traumatic emotional impact it can have on those who experience it first-hand. Similarly, Asian memoirs, autobiographies and diaries frequently deal with the hardships of coping with war, poverty and social injustice. The voices that are heard can be confronting but are often also inspirational in their desire to promote social and cultural reform and freedom. Cultural adjustment and assimilation problems are other recurring themes in many Asian texts. This is not surprising with estimates that as many as twenty million Asian migrants have left their homelands to settle elsewhere. Studying such texts deepens historical and cultural familiarity and builds empathy through identification with often youthful protagonists. They can also increase student appreciation for virtues such as resilience, courage and determination in overcoming physical, cultural and language barriers. The rich literary history and diversity of Asian texts offer students many opportunities to broaden their learning and communication skills

Book Learning English Learning America

Download or read book Learning English Learning America written by Juana Mora and published by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrants must navigate new practices and the challenges that come with intercultural exchange and interaction. The authors advance productive strategies and views for more expansive language-learning approaches by grounding their work in narratives of diverse Asian and Latina/o community members who experienced the processes of immigration and transmigration and negotiated a range of developmental tasks--tasks that are generally not factored into theories of learning and development or classroom pedagogies. We are introduced to individual stories of hardship, alienation, and resilience from which we can begin to understand better the regularity of experiences shared by members of Latino/a and Asian cultural communities. But equally important, these stories also make visible the significant variance in how individuals develop adaptive strategies to assist their movement across borders--national, linguistic, and cultural.--From introduction.
