Book Early Encounters between East Asia and Europe

Download or read book Early Encounters between East Asia and Europe written by Ralf Hertel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While inquiries into early encounters between East Asia and the West have traditionally focused on successful interactions, this collection inquires into the many forms of failure, experienced on all sides, in the period before 1850. Countering a tendency in scholarship to overlook unsuccessful encounters, it starts from the assumption that failures can prove highly illuminating and provide valuable insights into both the specific shapes and limitations of East Asian and Western imaginations of the Other, as well as of the nature of East-West interaction. Interdisciplinary in outlook, this collection brings together the perspectives of sinology, Japanese and Korean studies, historical studies, literary studies, art history, religious studies, and performance studies. The subjects discussed are manifold and range from missionary accounts, travel reports, letters and trade documents to fictional texts as well as material objects (such as tea, chinaware, or nautical instruments) exchanged between East and West. In order to avoid a Eurocentric perspective, the collection balances approaches from the fields of English literature, Spanish studies, Neo-Latin studies, and art history with those of sinology, Japanese studies, and Korean studies. It includes an introduction mapping out the field of failures in early modern encounters between East Asia and Europe, as well as a theoretically minded essay on the lessons of failure and the ethics of cross-cultural understanding.

Book Asia Materialized Perceptions of China in Renaissance Florence

Download or read book Asia Materialized Perceptions of China in Renaissance Florence written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Ming China was largely inaccessible to outsiders during the sixteenth century, myriad goods washed into the European market via newly established maritime trade routes. China was of particular interest to Europeans as a country that had attained quasi-mythical status through travel narratives such as Marco Polo's tenacious account; it was believed to have superior technological prowess in manufacturing materials such as ceramics and silk, and to be a land of vast natural abundance. Yet, despite the panoply of commodities, there was a remarkable absence of images illustrating China in cinquecento Italy, which was a period that valued accurately naturalistic visual rendering of the natural world.

Book New Worlds Reflected

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chloë Houston
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-05-06
  • ISBN : 1317087755
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book New Worlds Reflected written by Chloë Houston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utopias have long interested scholars of the intellectual and literary history of the early modern period. From the time of Thomas More's Utopia (1516), fictional utopias were indebted to contemporary travel narratives, with which they shared interests in physical and metaphorical journeys, processes of exploration and discovery, encounters with new peoples, and exchange between cultures. Travel writers, too, turned to utopian discourses to describe the new worlds and societies they encountered. Both utopia and travel writing came to involve a process of reflection upon their authors' societies and cultures, as well as representations of new and different worlds. As awareness of early modern encounters with new worlds moves beyond the Atlantic World to consider exploration and travel, piracy and cultural exchange throughout the globe, an assessment of the mutual indebtedness of these genres, as well as an introduction to their development, is needed. New Worlds Reflected provides a significant contribution both to the history of utopian literature and travel, and to the wider cultural and intellectual history of the time, assembling original essays from scholars interested in representations of the globe and new and ideal worlds in the period from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, and in the imaginative reciprocal responsiveness of utopian and travel writing. Together these essays underline the mutual indebtedness of travel and utopia in the early modern period, and highlight the rich variety of ways in which writers made use of the prospect of new and ideal worlds. New Worlds Reflected showcases new work in the fields of early modern utopian and global studies and will appeal to all scholars interested in such questions.

Book excerpt: Menzies makes the startling argument that in the year 1434, China -- then the world¿s most technologically advanced civilization -- provided the spark that set the European Renaissance ablaze. From that date onward, Europeans embraced Chinese intellectual ideas, discoveries, and inventions, all of which form the basis of western civilization today. This history argues that a Chinese fleet arrived in Tuscany in 1434, where they were received by Pope Eugenius IV. The delegation presented the pope with a wealth of Chinese learning from a range of fields: art, geog., astronomy, math, printing, architecture, steel mfg., military weaponry, and more. This treasure trove of knowledge spread across Europe, igniting the Renaissance. Illus.
