This enterprise sprang up in seventh-century China and seventeenth-century India, encouraged by the patronage and openness of the Chinese and Indian imperial courts. While the Western quest was largely a Protestant preoccupation, in Asia the search was marked by its diversity: participants included Hindus, Jains, Muslims, Catholics, and members of the Church of the East. During the age of European colonialism, Jesus was first seen by many Asians as a tribal god of the farangis, or white Europeans. But as his story circulated, Asians remade Jesus, at times appreciatively and at other times critically. R. S. Sugirtharajah demonstrates how Buddhist and Taoist thought, combined with Christian insights, led to the creation of the Chinese Jesus Sutras of late antiquity, and explains the importance of a biography of Jesus composed in the sixteenth-century court of the Mughal emperor Akbar. He also brings to the fore the reconstructions of Jesus during the Chinese Taiping revolution, the Korean Minjung uprising, and the Indian and Sri Lankan anti-colonial movements. In Jesus in Asia, Sugirtharajah situates the historical Jesus beyond the narrow confines of the West and offers an eye-opening new chapter in the story of global Christianity.

The author here attempts to formulate an Asian Christology in line with the thoughts of Fr. Tissa Balasuriya. Late Fr. Tissa Balasuriya was a leading and also one of the earliest interpreters of Christ from an Asian perspective. Balasuriya was critical to the western, traditional, classical interpretations of Christ that were indifferent and ignorant to the contextual realities of Asia. This scholarly research provides a lucid picture of how Asians respond and interpret Christ in terms of their context. The author takes Balasuriya's model of interpretation to provide what could be the basic thrust of Asian Christology. In the Asian context, Jesus Christ is divine because he is human and he is human because he is divine. Hence, to make it brief, Christology from below must start with Jesus Christ who is very much from the people and for the people. Indeed, this makes God's incarnation in Christ more meaningful and beautiful. Accordingly, Jesus is not only the son of God, but also had the human face. Grace Ji-Sun Kim asks, what is the "good news" for these women, and how can they come to understand God is with them? Kim's visionary work is also a pioneering effort -- Korean North American women's theology is in an early stage of development and she is one of only a few Korean North American women theologians. Kim exposes an additional layer of oppression for Korean North American women -- an accumulation of han. She characterizes han as a prevalent sense of unresolved resentment against injustice suffered and a sense of helplessness because of the overwhelming odds against them. The Grace of Sophia proposes that linking Jesus with Sophia can be a meaningful way of portraying Christ to Korean North American women. The biblical figure Sophia, understood in conjunction with wisdom elements of Asian religious tradition, will offer a liberating and healing Christology for these women.

It's so much easier to reject it, than to allow it to threaten your whole frame of reference. That tug of war, that vague unease, that's supposed to happen too. Aside from being an addictive and lazy habit, it just may deprive you someday of knowing that wonderful excruciating panic of having your mind blown open.
