Book excerpt: "Overall, Asia's nuclear future is unsettled: it might get better, it might get worse, or it might continue as is. But across all of those possible futures, nuclear 'latency' - nuclear skills, materials and delivery vehicles appropriate for nuclear weapons - will be a rising tide." -- Book cover.

Book Asia the US and Extended Nuclear Deterrence

Download or read book Asia the US and Extended Nuclear Deterrence written by Andrew O'Neil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Cold War, significant attention has focussed on the issue of nuclear deterrence and in particular whether formal nuclear security guarantees from nuclear weapons states to non-nuclear weapons states involving the possible use of nuclear weapons have a place in the twenty-first century global strategic landscape. Growing support for nuclear disarmament in the US and elsewhere has seen serious doubts being raised about the ongoing utility of extended nuclear deterrence. This book provides the first detailed analysis of the way in which extended nuclear deterrence operates in contemporary Asia. It addresses the following key questions: What does the role of extended nuclear deterrence in Asia tell us about the broader role of extended nuclear deterrence in the contemporary international system? Is this role likely to change significantly in the years ahead? O’Neil uses a theoretical and historical framework to analyse the contemporary and future dynamics of extended nuclear deterrence in Asia and challenges many of the existing orthodox perspectives on the topic. Providing a new perspective on debates surrounding extended nuclear deterrence, this book will be of interest not only to students and scholars of Asian politics, international relations and security studies, but also to policy makers and professionals.

Book East Asia s Nuclear Future A Long Term View of Threat Reduction

Download or read book East Asia s Nuclear Future A Long Term View of Threat Reduction written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a long-term perspective, East Asia presents some of the most important nuclear challenges on the global scene. Preventing the emergence of new nuclear-armed states in the region remains a top U.S. priority. To reduce long-term risks, the U.S. has pursued strategies to promote regional security and nonproliferation, as now being updated by the Bush administration. The impact of ballistic missile defense (BMD) is hotly debated in Asia, with best- and worst case possibilities now coming into focus. With an eye toward achieving best-case outcomes, the U.S. should tailor its BMD and arms control strategies in ways that enhance not only deterrence but also reassurance.

Book Asia s Nuclear Futures

Download or read book Asia s Nuclear Futures written by Chung Min Lee and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the role of nuclear weapons in Asia since 1945, its implications for regional and global security, and the conditions under which more Asian countries might seek to acquire a nuclear capability in the future. It focuses in particular on understanding the nuclear proliferation networks that enabled small and middle ranking powers such as Pakistan and North Korea to pursue nuclear weapons programs. Three networks are included: the Soviet network which allowed for the proliferation of nuclear technologies to India, and also to North Korea the Chinese network which provided missile technology to North Korea, and nuclear technology to Pakistan the A.Q. Khan network which transferred nuclear weapons technology from Pakistan to North Korea, and missile technology from North Korea to Pakistan. Chung Min Lee considers the pressures upon other Asian powers to go nuclear, particularly Japan and South Korea as a response to the North Korea nuclear program, and Taiwan as a response to China; the role of key forces including the rise of new asymmetrical military capabilities in Asian militaries, and the complex interplay between failing states, weapons of mass destruction and transnational terror groups.

Download or read book The Long Shadow written by Muthiah Alagappa and published by . This book was released on 2009-09-09 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Shadow is the first comprehensive examination of the roles and implications of nuclear weapons in the post-Cold War security environment, focusing on a broadly defined Asian security region. It investigates the strategies for the employment of nuclear weapons, and the consequences for security and stability in a dramatically altered strategic landscape, and a substantially different nuclear environment. The canvas of study includes the six nuclear weapon states China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia, and the US; several nuclear weapon-capable states Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan; and the aspirants Iran and North Korea. A key conclusion of the study is that nuclear weapons influence national security strategies in fundamental ways; and that deterrence continues to be the dominant role and strategy for the employment of nuclear weapons. It further infers that although there could be destabilizing situations, on balance nuclear weapons have reinforced security and stability in the Asian security region. As nuclear weapons will persist in the foreseeable future, it is important to re-examine old ideas, concepts, and strategies, and develop new ones relevant for the contemporary era. In line with this, the global nuclear order should be constructed anew based on present realities. Book Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace

Download or read book Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace written by Michael Krepon and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the history of nuclear arms control by a wise eavesdropper and masterful storyteller, Michael Krepon. The greatest unacknowledged diplomatic achievement of the Cold War was the absence of mushroom clouds. Deterrence alone was too dangerous to succeed; it needed arms control to prevent nuclear warfare. So, U.S. and Soviet leaders ventured into the unknown to devise guardrails for nuclear arms control and to treat the Bomb differently than other weapons. Against the odds, they succeeded. Nuclear weapons have not been used in warfare for three quarters of a century. This book is the first in-depth history of how the nuclear peace was won by complementing deterrence with reassurance, and then jeopardized by discarding arms control after the Cold War ended. Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace tells a remarkable story of high-wire acts of diplomacy, close calls, dogged persistence, and extraordinary success. Michael Krepon brings to life the pitched battles between arms controllers and advocates of nuclear deterrence, the ironic twists and unexpected outcomes from Truman to Trump. What began with a ban on atmospheric testing and a nonproliferation treaty reached its apogee with treaties that mandated deep cuts and corralled "loose nukes" after the Soviet Union imploded. After the Cold War ended, much of this diplomatic accomplishment was cast aside in favor of freedom of action. The nuclear peace is now imperiled by no less than four nuclear-armed rivalries. Arms control needs to be revived and reimagined for Russia and China to prevent nuclear warfare. New guardrails have to be erected. Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace is an engaging account of how the practice of arms control was built from scratch, how it was torn down, and how it can be rebuilt.

Book Filling the Hole in the Nuclear Future

Download or read book Filling the Hole in the Nuclear Future written by Robert Jacobs and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the dawn of the atomic age, art and popular culture have played an essential role interpreting nuclear issues to the public and investigating the implications of nuclear weapons to the future of human civilization. Political and social forces often seemed paralyzed in thinking beyond the advent of nuclear weapons and articulating a creative response to the dilemma posed by this apocalyptic technology. Art and popular culture are uniquely suited to grapple with the implications of the bomb and the disruptions in the continuity of traditional narratives about the human future endemic to the atomic age. Filling the Hole in the Nuclear Future explores the diversity of visions evoked in American and Japanese society by the mushroom cloud hanging over the future of humanity during the last half of the twentieth century. It presents historical scholarship on art and popular culture alongside the work of artists responding to the bomb, as well as artists discussing their own work. From the effect of nuclear testing on sci-fi movies during the mid-fifties in both the U.S. and Japan, to the socially engaged visual discussion about power embodied in Japanese manga, Filling the Hole in the Nuclear Future takes readers into unexpected territory

Book Nuclear Logics

  • Author : Etel Solingen
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book Nuclear Logics written by Etel Solingen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Logics examines why some states seek nuclear weapons while others renounce them. Looking closely at nine cases in East Asia and the Middle East, Etel Solingen finds two distinct regional patterns. In East Asia, the norm since the late 1960s has been to forswear nuclear weapons, and North Korea, which makes no secret of its nuclear ambitions, is the anomaly. In the Middle East the opposite is the case, with Iran, Iraq, Israel, and Libya suspected of pursuing nuclear-weapons capabilities, with Egypt as the anomaly in recent decades. Identifying the domestic conditions underlying these divergent paths, Solingen argues that there are clear differences between states whose leaders advocate integration in the global economy and those that reject it. Among the former are countries like South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, whose leaders have had stronger incentives to avoid the political, economic, and other costs of acquiring nuclear weapons. The latter, as in most cases in the Middle East, have had stronger incentives to exploit nuclear weapons as tools in nationalist platforms geared to helping their leaders survive in power. Solingen complements her bold argument with other logics explaining nuclear behavior, including security dilemmas, international norms and institutions, and the role of democracy and authoritarianism. Her account charts the most important frontier in understanding nuclear proliferation: grasping the relationship between internal and external political survival. Nuclear Logics is a pioneering book that is certain to provide an invaluable resource for researchers, teachers, and practitioners while reframing the policy debate surrounding nonproliferation.
