Book Ecotoxicology of Wild Mammals

Download or read book Ecotoxicology of Wild Mammals written by Richard F. Shore and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-04-25 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark book, which contains contributions from the world's foremost mammalian ecotoxicologists, is a truly impressive summary of research undertaken in this field in recent years. It is also the first book to draw such information together in a seamless and unified approach. In examining the exposure and effects of environmental contaminants in wild mammal populations, this book addresses four core questions: * What exactly do we know about environmental contaminants in wild mammals? * What are the commonalities and differences between mammal orders/species in the effects that contaminants have? * How and to what degree of accuracy can we predict the adverse effects of environmental contaminants on mammalian wildlife? * How significant are contaminant insults compared with other density-independent and -dependent factors such as habitat loss, climatic factors and disease? The key underlying scientific principles and issues raised by the team of international authors will have significance throughout the world, making this an invaluable book not only for all those studying the effects of environmental pollutants on mammals, but also on regulatory agencies, and those carrying out environmental impact assessment.

Book excerpt: Verbal attacks against Israel for human rights violations have turned into physical attacks against the Jewish community worldwide. How has that happened? This book attempts to explain the phenomenon. Anti-Zionists, whose primary goal is destruction of the State of Israel, use accusations of the worst forms of human rights violations against Israel to delegitimize the state. These accusations criminalize the Jewish population worldwide for actual or presumed support of the State of Israel. The contemporary international human rights system and the existence of the State of Israel are twin legacies of the Holocaust. The failure of the human rights system to prevent attacks on Israel and the Jews is an aftershock of the Holocaust.

  • Author : Jonathan M. Hall
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2021-12-15
  • ISBN : 1501761021

Download or read book Reclaiming the Past written by Jonathan M. Hall and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming the Past examines the post-antique history of Argos and how the city's archaeological remains have been perceived and experienced since the late eighteenth century by both local residents and foreign visitors to the Greek Peloponnese. The first western visitors to Argos—a city continuously inhabited for six millennia—invariably expected to encounter landscapes described in classical texts—yet what they found fell far short of those expectations. At the same time, local meanings attributed to ancient sites reflected an understanding of the past at odds with the supposed expertise of classically educated outsiders. Jonathan M. Hall details how new views of Argos emerged after the Greek War of Independence (1821–1830) with the adoption of national narratives connecting the newly independent kingdom to its ancient Hellenic past. With rising local antiquarianism at the end of the nineteenth century, new tensions surfaced between conserving the city's archaeological heritage and promoting urban development. By carefully assessing the competing knowledge claims between insiders and outsiders over Argos's rich history, Reclaiming the Past addresses pressing questions about who owns the past.
