Book Environmental Tolerance Spread and Diversification of the Sea Anemone Genus Metridium

Download or read book Environmental Tolerance Spread and Diversification of the Sea Anemone Genus Metridium written by Heather Glon and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of the sea anemone genus Metridium are widespread through the circumboreal waters of the northern hemisphere. Multiple populations of Metridium senile have been introduced to South America and also South Africa, but these populations and the ability of M. senile to be transported long-distances is not well understood. As marine species commonly exhibit minimal morphological variation, molecular studies have been instrumental in identifying divergence and relationships. My research seeks to describe and understand the processes driving the current distribution of the species within Metridium. Beginning with Chapter 1, I give an in-depth introduction to Metridium. In Chapter 2, I test the temperature and salinity tolerance of M. senile in Japan. I find that the tolerance of M. senile is very broad, particularly for a cold-water sea anemone, but that asexual reproduction only takes place within the comfortable temperature and salinity range. The ability of M. senile to withstand temperature and salinity fluctuations as it applies to being a successful invader is further examined in Chapter 3 through broadly looking at several species of sea anemones. In this chapter, I review and consolidate information on the ten most well-known species of sea anemones that have been introduced outside of their native range, and elucidate specific characteristics that are common among these species. I pair these characteristics with vector potential and suggest how conditions both at the new location and in transit facilitate the introduction of each these species. In Chapters 4 & 5, I move into examining relationships both at the species and population level within Metridium to answer questions directly related to their current distribution. Genetic data has not recently been used to elucidate relationships within Metridium; thus, with the rapid evolution of genomic scale data as applied to biogeographic questions, we can now apply these data to worldwide datasets. In Chapter 4, I test multiple types of genetic data on small test datasets of Metridium to determine which method would be most efficient to use to answer my remaining questions, and I find that sequence capture data provides high resolution at both the species level and at the population level. I apply this knowledge in Chapter 5 to a scaled-up dataset of Metridium (n=236) that encompasses both the native range and several introduced populations in the southern hemisphere to confirm species boundaries, explore the dispersal history, and assess the influence of anthropogenic activities on the current distribution and genetic structure. I identify that there are multiple introductions to the southern hemisphere oceans, and that the introduced populations are spreading to new areas. Within the native range, there is admixture between oceans due to transport of the species, and hybridization between Metridium farcimen and M. senile occurs in human-disturbed habitat.

Book A Functional Biology of Sea Anemones

Download or read book A Functional Biology of Sea Anemones written by J. Malcolm Shick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Editor: Peter Calow, Department of Zoology, University of Sheffield, England The main aim of this series will be to illustrate and to explain the way organisms 'make a living' in nature. At the heart of this - their Junctional biology - is the way organisms acquire and then make use of resources in metabolism, movement, growth, reproduction, and so on. These processes will form the fundamental framework of all the books in the series. Each book will concentrate on a particular taxon (species, family, class or even phylum) and will bring together information on the form, physiology, ecology and evolutionary biology of the group. The aim will be not only to describe how organisms work, but also to consider why they have come to work in that way. By concentrating on taxa which are well known, it is hoped that the series will not only illustrate the success of selection, but also show the constraints imposed upon it by the physiological, morphological and developmental limitations of the groups. Another important feature of the series will be its organismic orientation. Each book will emphasize the importance of functional integration in the day-to-day lives and the evolution of organisms. This is crucial since, though it may be true that organisms can be considered as collections of gene determined traits, they nevertheless interact with their environment as integrated wholes and it is in this context that individual traits have been subjected to natural selection and have evolved.

Book Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates of the Northern Pacific Coast

Download or read book Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates of the Northern Pacific Coast written by Megumi F. Strathmann and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference work is designed to provide background information on an array of northeastern Pacific marine invertebrate species so that they can be more easily included in comparative studies of morphology, cell biology, reproduction, embryology, larval biology, and ecology. It is meant to serve biologists who are new to the field as well as experienced investigators who may not be familiar with the invertebrate fauna of the northern Pacific Coast. The species discussed in this volume are mostly from the cold temperate waters of the San Juan Archipelago, near Puget SOund and the Strait of Georgia, but the information and methods given will be useful in laboratories from Alaska to central California and applicable to some extend in other coastal or inland facilities. An introductory chapter discusses basic prodcedures for collecting and maintaining mature specimens, for initiating spawning, and for culturing embryos and larvae in the laboratory. Subsequent chapters summarize reproduction and development in thirty different invertebrate groups and provided ercent references through which additional information can be traced, cite monographs or keys needed to identify species, and give methods useful for studying an array of selected species. Available information on habitat, diet, reproductive mode, egg size, developmental pattern, developmental times, larval type, and conditions for settlement and metamorphosis is reported for over 450 species.

Book Behavioral Adaptation to Intertidal Life

Download or read book Behavioral Adaptation to Intertidal Life written by Guido Chelazzi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Behavioural Adaptation to Intertidal Life" held in Castiglioncello, Italy (May, 1987) was attended by 50 participants, most of whom presented requested lectures. It was perhaps the first time that specialists of various animal groups, from cnidarians to birds, were able to meet and discuss the importance of behavioural adaptation to this peculiar, sometimes very harsh environment. But the taxonomic barrier is not the only one which the meeting attemped to over come. Lately, the research on intertidal biology has spread from pure taxonomy and static analysis of community structure to such dynamic aspects as intra- and interspecific relationships, and physiological mechanisms aimed at avoiding stress and exploitation of limited-resources. This increasing interest stems not only from an inclination for this particular ecological system and some of its typical inhabitants, but also from the realization that rocky and sandy shore communities are suitable models for testing and improving some global theories of evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology and sociobiology. The number of eco-physiological and eco-ethological problems emerging from the study of intertidal animals is fascinatingly large and a complete understanding of this environment cannot be reached using a strictly "reductionistic" or a pure "holistic" approach.

Book Phylogenesis of Immune Functions

Download or read book Phylogenesis of Immune Functions written by Gregory W. Warr and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses recent advances in research regarding the evolution of specific and nonspecific defense responses in a taxonomically diverse array of species. Topics regarding invertebrates include the protective mechanisms (cellular and molecular) employed by insects, the protective roles of lectins, and the self-nonself discrimination revealed by tissue incompatibility reactions. With vertebrates, the evolution of the immunoglobulin-related superfamily of recognition molecules (including immunoglobulins and the major histocompatibility complex molecules) is examined over several chapters. Other topics reviewed include the evolution of nonimmunoglobulin mediators of defense (e.g., cytokines and eicosanoids), lymphocyte subpopulations (including effects of ambient temperature on function) and the phylogenetic emergence of natural killer cells. Phylogenesis of Immune Functions provides invaluable information for evolutionary biologists, as well as all immunologists and other researchers interested in discovering how inhabitants in our increasingly threatened biosphere protect themselves against environmental pathogens and toxins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the classic works of marine biology, a favorite for generations, has now been completely revised and expanded. Between Pacific Tides is a book for all who find the shore a place of excitement, wonder, and beauty, and an unsurpassed introductory text for both students and professionals. This book describes the habits and habitats of the animals that live in one of the most prolific life zones of the world--the rocky shores and tide pools of the Pacific Coast of the United States. The intricate and fascinating life processes of these creatures are described with affectionate care. The animals are grouped according to their most characteristic habitat, whether rocky shore, sandy beach, mud flat, or wharf piling, and the authors discuss their life history, physiology, and community relations, and the influence of wave shock and shifting tide level. Though the basic purpose and structure--and much of the text--of the book remain the same, content has been increased by about 20 percent; a multitude of changes and additios has been made in the text; the Annotated Systematic Index and General Bibliography have been updated and greatly expanded (now almost 2,300 entries); more than 200 new photographs and drawings have been incorporated; and an entirely new chapter has been added--a topical presentation of the several factors influencing distribution of organisms along the shore. This edition also includes John Steinbeck's Foreword to the 1948 edition.
