Passage of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938, which made support mandatory for certain commodities, increased the importance of price support in stabilizing prices of farm commodities. During World War II and the Korean War, the program was used to encourage increased agricultural output by minimizing price risks. In recent years, heavy production of many supported crops has put pressure on market prices, making greatly expanded support activity necessary.
