Book excerpt: Three aspects of information work in libraries, archives, museums and community information services are covered: the way in which information is controlled so that it can be retrieved; the bibliographies which provide this control; and the sources in which the information can be located. Bibliographies (ranging from catalogues to national bibliographies) and content sources (ranging from encyclopaedias to patents) are studied in all their forms: printed, microform and online databases, including CD-ROM. The book is specifically attuned to southern Africa. Although it is designed for students of information science and applied information science (librarianship), it also provides an effective guide to major South African and international reference and information sources.

Book Codex nutrient reference values

Download or read book Codex nutrient reference values written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication explains how Codex and the Committee for Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses worked over several years to develop the Codex nutrient reference values for protein, 13 vitamins and 6 minerals in the Codex guidelines for nutrition labelling. Nutrient reference values (NRVs) are a set of values used in nutrition labelling; they are derived from authoritative recommendations for daily nutrient intake. This publication documents the process and decisions involved in reviewing the Codex NRVs for protein, vitamins and minerals and provides a valuable record of many years of original and complex technical work. The Codex Alimentarius, or "Food Code" is a collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The Commission, also known as CAC, is the central part of the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme and was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO), to protect consumer health and promote fair practices in food trade. Drawing from primary evidence from several countries and one region that historically managed their own healthy food data and reported on national nutrient intake values, the review, which ended in 2016, will play a role in informing the general population about healthy eating for the next 10-20 years and forms the basis for establishing a suite of required NRVs for more specific population groups, the first of which are older infants and young children.

Book Vitamin and Mineral Requirements in Human Nutrition

Download or read book Vitamin and Mineral Requirements in Human Nutrition written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2004 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 20 years micronutrients have assumed great public health importance and a considerable amount of research has lead to increasing knowledge of their physiological role. Because it is a rapidly developing field, the WHO and FAO convened an Expert Consultation to evaluate the current state of knowledge. It had three main tasks: to review the full scope of vitamin and minerals requirements; to draft and adopt a report which would provide recommended nutrient intakes for vitamins A, C, D, E, and K; the B vitamins; calcium; iron; magnesium; zinc; selenium; and iodine; to identify key issues for future research and make preliminary recommendations for the handbook. This report contains the outcome of the Consultation, combined with up-to-date evidence that has since become available.
