Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just under two months New Zealanders Garth MacIntyre and Cam McLeay (who lives in Uganda) and Brit Neil McGrigor had travelled 5311 km up the world's largest river, and their expedition to find the source of the Nile was going as well as could be expected. But that all changed when they wrecked both a motorised craft and a support aircraft while battling heavy rapids in the Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda. When British friend Steve Willis rescued them in his Landrover - McGrigor having badly broken and burned his leg - they were ambushed by the RLA, a rebel group notorious for abducting and enslaving children. This ambush resulted in one of the group being killed. Grieving and traumatised, the men abandoned the expedition. Six months later they returned to complete it. They'd endured fear and fire, air accidents and toxic mushrooms, guerrillas and bullets and their comradeship had only strengthened. This is an epic adventure story that combines curiosity, geography and history with the dangers of a wild river, wildlife, disease and guerrillas. Excellently told by writer John McCrystal, this is a ripping yarn.

  • ISBN : 1804692395
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Rwanda written by Philip Briggs and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now into its eighth edition and written by Philip Briggs, the world’s leading author of African guidebooks, Bradt’s Rwanda has been the go-to guide for visitors to the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’ for more than 20 years. Still the only standalone guide in English to this increasingly popular destination, it remains in a class of its own for in-depth information. With fresh research into developments across the country, Bradt’s Rwanda includes expanded coverage of Gishwati-Mukura National Park, which opened to tourism in 2021, and up-to-date details of rapidly modernising Kigali, considered Africa’s cleanest city. Rwanda continues to change and develop at an unprecedented pace – no country has a higher proportion of female parliamentarians – and there’s hardly a more accessible part of Africa. It’s no less intriguing for the convenience, however, and Rwanda’s superlative natural attractions constantly improve, with growing animal populations, as in Akagera National Park, where Africa’s Big Five (rhino, lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo) can be seen. This new edition also includes extensive maps and natural history information, while details of kayak and canoe excursions on Lake Kivu and the Mukungwa River complement advice about staying on tea plantations at Sorwathe or Gisovu. It contains everything you need to know about tracking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park (workplace of primatologist Dian Fossey of Gorillas in the Mist fame) and chimpanzees in Nyungwe National Park (East Africa’s largest surviving montane forest, harbouring numerous endemic birds and primates) and Gishwati-Mukura (which is also the only location for the rare golden monkey outside the Virunga mountains). Also covered are Nyanza, with its hilltop Rukari King’s Palace Museum, and the Ethnographic Museum of Rwanda, the top cultural site in Butare (Huye). A chapter on nearby cities and national parks provides key necessary information to take an excursion into neighbouring DRC, including how to see lowland gorillas. As not only the most in-depth guide available in English, but also the guide with the longest history in the country itself, Bradt’s Rwanda is the indispensable companion for visitors, including wildlife enthusiasts and Africa aficionados.

Book Travels in Egypt and Nubia

Download or read book Travels in Egypt and Nubia written by Giovanni Battista Belzoni and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No study of the modern exploration of ancient Egypt is complete without the extraordinary work of Giovanni Belzoni. Once a circus strongman, trained as an engineer, he spent many years abroad in Egypt and Nubia studying the ancient ruins and shipping antiquities back to Europe. Though once considered a tomb robber, recent re-evaluations of Belzoni have given him credit for his remarkably keen powers of observation and, for his time, careful excavation methods and recording. A larger-than-life character, Belzoni was a true adventurer-explorer during a time of nationalist competition between the European powers for the best antiquities. This exciting and detailed account of his two journeys to Egypt and Nubia is a treasure of Egyptology. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book Americans in Egypt 1770 1915

Download or read book Americans in Egypt 1770 1915 written by Cassandra Vivian and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The voices of Americans have long been absent from studies of modern Egypt. Most scholars assume that Americans were either not in Egypt in significant numbers during the nineteenth century or had little of importance to say. This volume shows that neither was the case by introducing and relating the experiences and attitudes of 15 American personalities who worked, lived, or traveled in Egypt from the 1770s to the commencement of World War I. Often in their own words, explorers, consuls, tourists, soldiers, missionaries, artists, scientists, and scholars offer a rare American perspective on everyday Egyptian life and provide a new perspective on many historically significant events. The stories of these individuals and their sojourns not only recount the culture and history of Egypt but also convey the domination of the country by European powers and the support for Egypt by a young American nation.
