Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Portuguese Politics written by Jorge M. Fernandes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-13 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Portuguese Politics brings together the best scholars in the field offering an unrivalled coverage of the politics (broadly defined) of the country over the past 50 years. The Handbook includes eight sections. First, it looks at the past and present by making an overview of Portuguese political developments since democratization in the 1970s. Second, it looks at political institutions as the building blocks of Portuguese democracy. The third section examines mass politics and voters, that is, a thorough analysis of the demand-side of mass politics. The fourth section turns to the supply side of mass-politics by looking at parties and the party system. The fifth section looks at the Portuguese society by unpacking a plethora of societal aspects with direct implications for politics. The sixth section examines governance and public policies, with a view to understanding how a constellation of public policies has an impact on the quality of governance and in fostering well-being. The seventh section looks at Portugal and the European Union. The eighth and final section unpacks Portuguese foreign policy and defence.

Book Os dois um s mundo o Portugal de Bandeira

Download or read book Os dois um s mundo o Portugal de Bandeira written by Paulo Ricardo KRALIK and published by Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. ABSTRACT: Literary relations between Brazil and Portugal have been more fruitful in a not too distant past. Camões, Eugénio de Castro, António Nobre, Fernando Pessoa… Manuel Bandeira’s upbringing dwells deeply into the Lusitanian world, as he notes in his book of memories, Itinerário de Pasárgada. This paper attempts to highlight the presence of Portugal in Manuel Bandeira’s work. Symbolist poet António Nobre, for example, is an inspiring force, particularly in A cinza das horas, where we can find a very rich intertextual dialogue between Brazilian and Portuguese poets. In addition, he dedicates many other poems to Portuguese writers, and his work consistently plunges into Lusitanian Symbolism. Bandeira often focuses on important themes to Portugal, like the sea, the melancholy, the «saudade» and Salazar. This paper also investigates the recurrent Portuguese presence on his essays and chronicles. Key words: Brazil-Portugal relation; Portuguese literature; Intertextuality; Manuel Bandeira.

Download or read book Geographers written by Elizabeth Baigent and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 40th volume of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies focuses exclusively on geographers from the Global South. For the first time in the serial's history, the entire volume is devoted to geographers who were born or who lived in South America and is combined with an editorial which roots their lives and careers in the context of the Global South more generally. These geographers' biobibliographies, which consider their personal and professional trajectories and encounters, deepen our understanding of geography as a whole, and raise important wider questions of the scope and place of Southern scholarship. This volume includes meticulously detailed volumes on five of the most prominent and ground-breaking geographers in the Global South, including: · The Argentinian geographer Elina González Acha de Correa Morales, who was the first woman to apply for membership of the Argentinean Geographical Institute in 1888 and who played an important role in developing geographical science in Argentina · The Brazilian geographer Bernardino de Souza, active in Brazil in the late nineteenth century as a secretary of the Geographical and Historical Institute of Bahia · The Portuguese scholar Jaime Zuzarte Cortesão, Director of the National Library of Portugal, who was exiled in Brazil between 1940 and 1957 and greatly influenced research into the exploration and mapping of South America. · The Brazilian geographer Josué Apolônio de Castro who was a member of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation's international advisory group on nutrition during the 1940s and the 1950s · The late twentieth-century Brazilian geographer Antônio Carlos Robert Moraes, who was a key figure in the circulation of critical approaches in Brazilian geography Together these biobibliographies allow the reader to focus on the Global South as a place of geographical knowledge production, translation and reception, enlarging our discipline's histories. The volume also links the serial firmly to wider debates on decolonisation and post colonialism and is the latest manifestation of the editorial drive to broaden the serial's reach and impact and to consolidate its place as an important vehicle in narrating geography's international story.

Book An Economic History of Portugal 1143 2010

Download or read book An Economic History of Portugal 1143 2010 written by Leonor Freire Costa and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fascinating exploration of the evolution of the Portuguese economy over the course of eight centuries, from the foundation of the kingdom in 1143, when political boundaries began to take shape in the midst of the Christian Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula, and the formation of an empire, to the integration of the nation into the European Communities and the Economic and Monetary Union. Through six chapters, the authors provide a vibrant history of Portugal's past with a focus ranging from the medieval economy and the age of globalization, to war and recovery, the Atlantic economy, the rise of liberalism and patterns of convergence. The book provides a unique long-term perspective of change in a southern European country and its empire, which responds to the fundamental broader questions about when, how and why economies expand, stagnate or contract.

Book The Portuguese Speaking Diaspora

Download or read book The Portuguese Speaking Diaspora written by Darlene J. Sadlier and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the concept of “globalization,” the Portuguese constructed a vast empire that extended into Africa, India, Brazil, and mid-Atlantic territories, as well as parts of China, Southeast Asia, and Japan. Using this empire as its starting point and spanning seven centuries and four continents, The Portuguese-Speaking Diaspora examines literary and artistic works about the ensuing diaspora, or the dispersion of people within the Portuguese-speaking world, resulting from colonization, the slave trade, adventure seeking, religious conversion, political exile, forced labor, war, economic migration, and tourism. Based on a broad array of written and visual materials, including historiography, letters, memoirs, plays, poetry, fiction, cartographic imagery, paintings, photographs, and films, The Portuguese-Speaking Diaspora is the first detailed analysis of the different and sometimes conflicting cultural productions of the imperial diaspora in its heyday and an important context for understanding the more complex and broader-based culture of population travel and displacement from the former colonies to present-day “homelands.” The topics that Darlene J. Sadlier discusses include exploration and settlement by the Portuguese in different parts of the empire; the Black Atlantic slave trade; nineteenth-century travel and Orientalist imaginings; the colonial wars; and the return of populations to Portugal following African independence. A wide-ranging study of the art and literature of these and other diasporic movements, this book is a major contribution to the growing field of Lusophone studies.
