Book A Man among Other Men

Download or read book A Man among Other Men written by Jordanna Matlon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Man among Other Men examines competing constructions of modern manhood in the West African metropolis of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Engaging the histories, representational repertoires, and performative identities of men in Abidjan and across the Black Atlantic, Jordanna Matlon shows how French colonial legacies and media tropes of Blackness act as powerful axes, rooting masculine identity and value within labor, consumerism, and commodification. Through a broad chronological and transatlantic scope that culminates in a deep ethnography of the livelihoods and lifestyles of men in Abidjan's informal economy, Matlon demonstrates how men's subjectivities are formed in dialectical tension by and through hegemonic ideologies of race and patriarchy. A Man among Other Men provides a theoretically innovative, historically grounded, and empirically rich account of Black masculinity that illuminates the sustained power of imaginaries even as capitalism affords a deficit of material opportunities. Revealed is a story of Black abjection set against the anticipation of male privilege, a story of the long crisis of Black masculinity in racial capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning two and a half centuries, from the earliest contacts in the 1540s to the crumbling of Spanish power in the 17908, Storms Brewed in Other Men's Worlds is a panoramic view of Indian peoples and Spanish and French intruders in the early Southwest. The primary focus is the world of the American Indian, ranging from the Caddos in the east to the Hopis in the west, and including the histories of the Pueblo, Apache, Navajo, Ute, and Wichita peoples. Within this region, from Texas to New Mexico, the Comanches played a key, formative role, and no less compelling is the story of the Hispanic frontier peoples who weathered the precarious, often arduous process of evolving coexistence with the Indians on the northern frontier of New Spain. First published in 1975, this second edition includes a new preface and afterword by Elizabeth A. H. John, in which she discusses current research issues and the status of the Indian peoples of the Southwest.

Book Still Straight

  • Author : Tony Silva
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2021-03-23
  • ISBN : 1479801097
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book Still Straight written by Tony Silva and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why some straight men have sex with other men Why do some straight men in rural America have sex with other men? In Still Straight, Tony Silva convincingly argues that these men—many of whom enjoy hunting, fishing, and shooting guns—are not gay, bisexual, or “just experimenting.” As he shows, these men can enjoy a range of relationships with other men, from hookups to sexual friendships to secretive loving partnerships, all while strongly identifying with straight culture. Drawing on riveting interviews with straight white men who live in rural America, Silva explores the fascinating, and unexpected, disconnect between sexual behavior and identity. Some use sex with men to bond with other men in an acceptably masculine way; some are not particularly attracted to men, but are wary of emotional attachment with women; and others view sex with men—as opposed to women—as a more acceptable form of extramarital sexual behavior. Taking us inside the lives of straight white men who have sex with other men, Still Straight shows us that heterosexuality in rural America is not always, in fact, what it seems.

Book My Wife With Other Men Overcoming the Barriers

Download or read book My Wife With Other Men Overcoming the Barriers written by Karina Muller and published by Edição Digital. This book was released on 2021-07-18 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My Wife With Other Men - Overcoming the Barriers..." This is a trilogy written in great detail, during the COVID 19 pandemic by the couple's wife, Karina and reviewed by her husband Fabio (Pseudonyms). Each of the e-Books tells a "different sexual story based on true facts", of the couple's sexual adventures with other men. The couple had their upbringing and education based on concepts of a puritanical and conservative family, where such sexual practices would never be allowed or accepted in the real world (work, friends, family, etc.). However, like many other couples, they also have great sexual fantasies and desires and have decided to put them into practice, unlike other couples who choose "betrayal". The couple chose truth, open dialog, complicity, companionship, and love, to start this "new world of fetishes and sexual fantasies" together. In this THIRD e-book of the trilogy, the couple sets out on an adventure that few couples have the courage to explore, but many have the desire to put into practice this tempting and highly exciting desire, both for the husband and the wife! They also tell us in THIS THIRD PART, how everything was a "surprise" although the desire and fantasy already existed inside both of them, during this new and highly exciting experience things were molding without getting out of control and at each... well, without spoilers you better read on to see and get excited about this wonderful couple that shared their experiences with us, although they are and remain anonymous. The three e-books are narrated by the WIFE of the couple, with a wealth of details, and are recommended to be read by singles (people alone) even as a learning to know correctly how to behave and or approach a couple that enjoys male ménage and or cuckold, also recommended for couples to spice up their relationships, or even that push that was missing to start in this liberal world together, and of course, recommended for every lover of a good real story, erotic, sexual and spicy. ATTENTION: This e-book is about REAL EXPERIENCES, we only changed the names using pseudonyms and changed the locations to respect the secrecy and privacy of the people involved. Any resemblance to real names and places is mere coincidence. This trilogy is dedicated to all couples, men, women and people of all genders, who also have healthy sexual desires and fantasies and would like to fulfill them in liberal sex, but responsible and conscious! (Erotic literature recommended for ages 18+).

Book Men Explain Things to Me

Download or read book Men Explain Things to Me written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Critics Circle Award–winning author delivers a collection of essays that serve as the perfect “antidote to mansplaining” (The Stranger). In her comic, scathing essay “Men Explain Things to Me,” Rebecca Solnit took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters. She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!” This book features that now-classic essay with six perfect complements, including an examination of the great feminist writer Virginia Woolf’s embrace of mystery, of not knowing, of doubt and ambiguity, a highly original inquiry into marriage equality, and a terrifying survey of the scope of contemporary violence against women. “In this series of personal but unsentimental essays, Solnit gives succinct shorthand to a familiar female experience that before had gone unarticulated, perhaps even unrecognized.” —The New York Times “Essential feminist reading.” —The New Republic “This slim book hums with power and wit.” —Boston Globe “Solnit tackles big themes of gender and power in these accessible essays. Honest and full of wit, this is an integral read that furthers the conversation on feminism and contemporary society.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Essential.” —Marketplace “Feminist, frequently funny, unflinchingly honest and often scathing in its conclusions.” —Salon

Book Why Men Hurt Women and Other Reflections on Love Violence and Masculinity

Download or read book Why Men Hurt Women and Other Reflections on Love Violence and Masculinity written by Kopano Ratele and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using conversations, observations, and reflections, psychologist Kopano Ratele meditates on love, violence and masculinity This book seeks to imagine the possibility of a more loving masculinity in a society where structural violence, failures of government and economic inequality underpin much of the violent behavior that men display. Enriched with personal reflections on his own experiences as a partner, father, psychologist and researcher in the field of men and masculinities, Why Men Hurt Women and Other Reflections on Love, Violence and Masculinity is Kopano Ratele’s meditation on love and violence, and the way these forces shape the emotional lives of boys and men. At the core of these critical and deeply insightful texts is the question of why men hurt women they love. Ratele contends that many men in our society suffer from a painful, unrecognized, yet consequential love hunger that sets in during boyhood. This need for love may lie at the root of some of the male violence that damages the lives of women, children and men themselves. Blending academic analysis and rigor in a readable narrative style, Ratele illuminates the complex nuances of gender, intimacy and power in the context of the human need for love and care. While unsparing in his analysis of men’s inner lives, Ratele lays out a path for addressing the hunger for love in boys and men. He argues that just as the beliefs and practices relating to gender, sexuality and the nature of love are constantly being challenged and revised, so our ideas about masculinity, and men’s and boys’ capacity to show genuine loving care for each other and for women, can evolve.
