Book Discourses on Nations and Identities

Download or read book Discourses on Nations and Identities written by Daniel Syrovy and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. In addition to these chapters, the volume also collects a number of thematically related group sections from the ICLA congress, preserving their original context.

It begins with Adolf Hitler's staging of the armistice at Rethondes and moves across the dark years - analyzing the official junket by French artists to Germany, the exhibition of Arno Breker's colossi in Paris, the looting of the state museums and Jewish collections, the glorification of Philippe P?tain and a pure national identity, the demonization of modernists and foreigners, and the range of responses by artists and artisans. The sum is a pioneering expos? of the deployment of art and ideology to hold the heart of darkness at bay"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Crisis and the Arts Dada and the press

Download or read book Crisis and the Arts Dada and the press written by Stephen C. Foster and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any understanding of Dada requires a serious consideration of its reception, most discernable through the press. To the degree that Dada entered and engaged the dominant cultural discourse of the period and amounted to something more significant than the mere assertion of its agendas, Dada was required to, and made an enormous effort to, engage its potential public. Dada also fully understood that there is no such thing as a one-sided discourse and courted the attention and response of majority culture. Volume nine goes far in describing and measuring the strategies and effectiveness of Dada's confrontation of establishment society. Enormous evidence is brought to detailing and defining the positions of those responsible for Dada's critique and the reactions of both Dada's advocates and enemies. As one of the most exhaustive studies of reception to date, this volume helps to fill a serious gap in the literature of cultural history.

Book History of Linguistics 2008

Download or read book History of Linguistics 2008 written by Gerda Hassler and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 11th International Conference on the History of the Language Sciences (Potsdam 2008) which are especially representative of the concerns of the conference and its thematic range. The reflection about language and the individual languages has characterized cultures since ancient times and has brought forth different traditions of the language sciences. The contributions cover the period from antiquity to contemporary history. In addition to terminological and social history approaches, they also include research results based on corpora or which reconstruct theoretical approaches. More than other scholars, linguists are turning to the history of their science for answers to current questions. This underscores the value of the history of language sciences for understanding the present state of linguistics and its development. Interdisciplinarity necessary for the research of many issues and manifestations of language makes historical reflections on the disciplines indispensable.

Book Antillanit cr olit litt rature monde

Download or read book Antillanit cr olit litt rature monde written by Isabelle Constant and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores concepts present in literatures in French that, since the 2007 manifesto, more and more critics, suspicious of the term Francophonie, now prefer to designate as littérature-monde (world literature). The book shows how the three movements of antillanité, créolité and littérature-monde each in their own way break with the past and distance themselves from the hexagonal centre. The critics in this collection show how writers seek to represent an authentic view of their history, culture, identities, reality and diversities. According to many of the contributors, creolization and littérature-monde offer new perspectives and possibly a new genre of literature.
