Book Rethinking Film Festivals in the Pandemic Era and After

Download or read book Rethinking Film Festivals in the Pandemic Era and After written by Marijke de Valck and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. This edited collection aims to document the effects of Covid-19 on film festivals and to theorize film festivals in the age of social distancing. To some extent, this crisis begs us to consider what happens when festivals can’t happen; while films have found new (temporary) channels of distribution (most often in the forms of digital releases), the festival format appears particularly vulnerable in pandemic times. Imperfect measures, such as the move to a digital format, cannot recapture the communal experience at the very core of festivals. Given the global nature of the pandemic and the diversity of the festival phenomenon, this book features a wide range of case studies and analytical frameworks. With contributors including established scholars and frontline festival workers, the book is conceived as both a theoretical endeavour and a practical exploration of festival organizing in pandemic times.

Book Aerial Environments on the Early Modern Stage

Download or read book Aerial Environments on the Early Modern Stage written by Chloe Kathleen Preedy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early days of the professional English theatre, dramatists including Dekker, Greene, Heywood, Jonson, Marlowe, Middleton, and Shakespeare wrote for playhouses that, though enclosed by surrounding walls, remained open to the ambient air and the sky above. The drama written for performance at these open-air venues drew attention to and reflected on its own relationship to the space of the air. At a time when theories of the imagination emphasized dramatic performance's reliance upon and implication in the air from and through which its staged fictions were presented and received, plays written for performance at open-air venues frequently draw attention to the nature and significance of that elemental relationship. Aerial Environments on the Early Modern Stage considers the various ways in which the air is brought into presence within early modern drama, analyzing more than a hundred works that were performed at the London open-air playhouses between 1576 and 1609, with reference to theatrical atmospheres and aerial encounters. It explores how various theatrical effects and staging strategies foregrounded early modern drama's relationship to, and impact on, the actual playhouse air. In considering open-air drama's pervasive and ongoing attention to aerial imagery, actions, and representational strategies, the book suggest that playwrights and their companies developed a dramaturgical awareness that extended from the earth to encompass and make explicit the space of air.

Download or read book Tourism and COVID 19 written by Richard W. Butler and published by CABI. This book was released on 2024-08-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global tourism industry were unprecedented. International travel fell by 72% in 2020, the worst year on record for tourism. Tourism operations, from family businesses to national tourism organizations all faced potential economic ruin. They had to adapt their business practices and adopt new ways of operating, in order to work around ever-changing restrictions. This book is comprised of chapters and case studies previously published by CABI, that deal with the impacts of, and responses to, the COVID-19 pandemic, along with specially written introductory and concluding chapters that provide context. It provides invaluable snapshots of reactions to the pandemic from individuals and organizations involved in a variety of forms of tourism. Many authors have included postscripts, to record or update their views following the end of the pandemic. Key themes and issues addressed include: anticipation of and preparedness for the pandemic, the scale of the problem, the adjustments made during the pandemic, likely future directions of change and the implications for sustainability. The book is a useful resource for researchers, students and practitioners in tourism, hospitality and related disciplines.

Book Digital Museums in the Global South

Download or read book Digital Museums in the Global South written by Emma Duester and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on digital museums in the context of Vietnam and contributes to global discussions on the development of digital museum offerings needed to meet audience demands, requirements for sustainable digitisation methods for cultural heritage, demands for the development of intellectual property protection for the digital environment, and shows ways for national governments to support digital museums. Duester provides insight into museums in part of the Global South, where infrastructure funding and technical and human resource constraints impact the take-up and display of digital content. With on-the-ground research from three Vietnamese museums, Duester argues for a museum framework that is sustainable, ethical, and culturally appropriate. The Vietnamese government’s strategy for digitalisation of culture, heritage, and museums is assessed, and the book includes a list of recommendations on sustainable digitisation methods, intellectual property protection measures for the digital environment, management, phygital business models, and new digital revenue streams. The volume will benefit scholars involved in the cultural and creative industries, as well as museum professionals and cultural policymakers who will value the book’s assessment of international standards, treaties, and conventions on copyright law and how they apply to museums, as well as the recommendations listed above.

Book Gender Equality and the Cultural Economy

Download or read book Gender Equality and the Cultural Economy written by Helmut K. Anheier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-12 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of women in the creative and cultural industries remains precarious. This comparative analysis provides insights from seven key economies to help understand progress towards gender equality in culture and the arts and the broader cultural economy. With empirical and policy analysis spanning Europe and the US, the authors investigate the extent to which gender equality has entered the mainstream along dimensions of leadership, access and awards, pay and pension gaps, work-life balance, and the monitoring of gender equality. While many of the structural barriers have been erased, countries differ significantly in how much gender equality has been achieved in the creative economy and how much female talent is lost and unrecognized. This book is essential reading for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners across the human and social sciences, especially those involved with arts management and the creative or cultural economy more broadly.
