Book excerpt: The history of art in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance has generally been written as a story of elites: bankers, noblemen, kings, cardinals, and popes and their artistic interests and commissions. Recent decades have seen attempts to recast the story in terms of material culture, but the focus seems to remain on the upper strata of society. In his inclusive analysis of art from 1300 to 1600, Rembrandt Duits rectifies this. Bringing together thought-provoking ideas from art historians, historians, anthropologists and museum curators, The Art of the Poor examines the role of art in the lower social classes of Europe and explores how this influences our understanding of medieval and early modern society. Introducing new themes and raising innovative research questions through a series of thematically grouped short case studies, this book gives impetus to a new field on the cusp of art history, social history, urban archaeology, and historical anthropology. In doing so, this important study helps us re-assess the very concept of 'art' and its function in society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the relationship between art and cybernetics and their intersections, with works that use the powerlessness of art. Cybernetics of the Poor examines the relationship between art and cybernetics and their intersections in the past and present. From the late 1940s on, the term cybernetics began to be used to describe self-regulating systems that measure, anticipate, and react in order to intervene in changing conditions. Initially relevant mostly in the fields of administration, planning, criminology, and early ecology, under digital capitalism cybernetics has since become an economic factor (particularly in the realm of big data). In such a cybernetic totality, art must respond to a new situation: a cybernetics of the poor. Cybernetics of the Poor presents work that uses the powerlessness of art--its poverty--vis-à-vis the cybernetic machine to propose countermodels: work that is both recent and historical by artists who believed in cybernetics as a participatory, playful practice or were pioneers in delineating a counter-cybernetics. How much of what Thomas Pynchon termed "counterforce" exists within art when it is conceived as a cybernetics of the poor?

Book excerpt: Van Gogh: a poor Artist? Van Gogh and Money focuses on Vincent's financial situation. Known as the ultimate embodiment of the notion of the "poor artist", Vincent was largely unable to sell his work during his lifetime. The letters between Vincent and his brother Theo tell of an eternal lack of money, and the difficulties this created when it came to practising his art. Paint, canvases and models were, as he discovered, not cheap. He was, however, more than happy to sacrifice his physical wellbeing in the interest of producing his masterpieces. Van Gogh and Money follows Vincent during two critical periods of his artistic career, his time spent in The Hague and Arles. At both stages, he was supported by his brother Theo, who sent him a monthly allowance that never seemed sufficient. This dependency on his brother caused Vincent immense guilt. From his letters we get a good insight into Vincent's financial affairs, since the brothers' correspondence often touched on the subject of money. This book presents a more nuanced view of Vincent as the impoverished artist, as Van Gogh was in fact in a rather fortunate position compared to many of his peers. Regardless of the actual amount of money he received from his brother, it becomes clear that Vincent was poor in the light of his ambition. By reading this publication, we hope that you will be able to better appreciate and understand Vincent's work by shedding light on the man behind the iconic paintings. Van Gogh and Money combines enlightening quotations from archival material with an entertaining and easy-to-read format, staying clear of jargon. Book Why was this Not Given to the Poor

Download or read book Why was this Not Given to the Poor written by Abigail A. Woolley and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis works toward an answer to the question, "Should resources be devoted to the arts despite the persistence of poverty in the world?" This question is a perennial one, but it straddles disciplines to such an extent that little work has been done to answer the question systematically. The answer to this question depends on developing a theological framework for the callings of Christians that establishes a clear role for both art and care for the poor, so that judgments can be made regarding priorities in different circumstances. To this end, chapter one begins by laying out a framework for humans' intended activities on the basis of their purposeful creation by God. The theological tradition that contributes the most helpful answers to this question is Dutch Neo-Calvinism of the nineteenth century. The chapter lays out the tasks associated with "general calling" and "special calling," and it establishes the significance of Sabbath rest on the basis of the intrinsic worth of creation and human life as created by God. Chapter two then seeks to establish a place for art within this picture of humans' tasks on earth, by developing a definition based on approaches to art throughout history. Key thinkers in this chapter are twentieth-century successors of the Dutch Neo-Calvinists, who emphasize the "expansiveness" of art and, I argue, identify art mostly closely with a theology of Sabbath. The chapter also suggests boundaries for art's proper use, by investigating medieval classifications of gluttony. It concludes that art is necessary but must honor certain principles for right use. Chapter three then turns to the problem of poverty, aiming to discover the place that care for the poor should occupy in a person's life. It evaluates the causes of poverty according to both economists and a theology of the Fall and seeks to reconcile the experience of scarcity with a theology of abundance. It concludes that care for the poor is commanded and may require sacrifice but is not as simple as mere sacrifice. Chapter four explores the relationship between art and care for the poor, suggesting that the relationship is parallel to that between the meaning-oriented Sabbath and the productivity-oriented work week. It interacts with three pericopes in the Gospels in which Christ establishes priorities in circumstances when service and worship seem to be in conflict. It concludes that all meaning-oriented activity cannot be sacrificed for further productivity, even for the good of humanity, without undermining the good of humanity itself. Art develops our perception of value, which is necessary in order to care for the poor in a truly honoring way.
