Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Community Fisheries Centre (CFC) strategy is presented as an organizational concept for providing the basic infrastructure and services needed to deal with the problems confronting small-scale fisheries development. Various types of fishermen's organizations, integrated development strategies, and the options for the technical services and support modules which go together to make up a CFC are examined in detail. Particular attention is given to participatory identification of important problems facing the fisherfolk, and the planning, mobilization of local resources, and implementation of locally based microprojects to deal with them. The operation and management of the CFC, and of the associated multidisciplinary Fisheries Development Unit which provides technical support and training to one or more CFCs, is covered in some detail. A final chapter is devoted to the possible role of fisheries cooperatives in a CFC context.

Download or read book Fisheries Development written by Bjørn Hersoug and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All coastal states have ambitions for the development of their fisheries. Not only do fisheries play an important role in sustaining peoples' livelihoods, but also in many countries in the north and the south, fisheries are important for the national economy. Moreover, fisheries are part of the process of globalisation, which, for better or worse, means that fisheries issues and problems have implications that extend beyond the level of the nation state. Fisheries development: the institutional challenge is the result of a long-term research programme on fisheries in developing countries. The book explains how fisheries development strategies changed over the years, from simple ideas of modernising the production equipment (boats and gear) to complex programmes involving management and institution building. It highlights the role of the state and the community in resource management and the challenges offered by new concepts such as ecosystem management in a Third World setting. Book jacket.
Download or read book Biodiversity and Climate Change Adaptation in Tropical Islands written by Chandrakasan Sivaperuman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity and Climate Change Adaptation in Tropical Islands provides comprehensive information on climate change, biodiversity, possible impacts, adaptation measures and policy challenges to help users rehabilitate and preserve the natural resources of tropical islands. While biodiversity and climate change of tropical islands has previously received less attention, it is ironically one of the most vulnerable regions in this regard. The core content of the work derives largely from the ideas and research output from various reputed scientists and experts who have recorded climate change impacts on aquatic and coastal life in tropical regions. Contributors have direct working experience with the tribes in some of the tropical islands. All of their expertise and information is compiled and presented in the work, including coverage related to climate change. This work highlights the ever-growing need to develop and apply strategies that optimize the use of natural resources, both on land and in water and judicious use of biodiversity. It functions as a critical resource on tropical island biodiversity for researchers, academicians, practitioners and policy makers in a variety of related disciplines. - Covers a huge range of biodiversity documentation, conservation measures and strategies that can be applied to various sectors, from forests to agriculture - Brings together expertise from researchers in the area who have direct experience in the regions described - Contains a wealth of field research related to biodiversity conservation and its applications from a variety of tropical islands

Download or read book Fish for the future Fisheries development and food security for Kiribati in an era of global climate change written by Campbell, B.[Author]; Hanich, Q.[Author] and published by WorldFish. This book was released on with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Kiribati is a vast South Pacific island group with one of the largest exclusive economic zones (EEZs) in the world. Kiribati waters support a wealth of marine fisheries activities. These activities occur in oceanic, coastal and inshore environments and range from large, foreign, industrial-scale oceanic fishing operations to small-scale, domestic, inshore subsistence fisheries, aquaculture and recreational fisheries. Kiribati has developed a framework of domestic and international governance arrangements that are designed to sustainably manage its wealth of marine resources. The report provides background information for fisheries projects in Kiribati that aim to build food security, improve artisanal livelihoods and strengthen community engagement in fisheries governance. It provides information on the current status of Kiribati fishery resources (oceanic and coastal), their current governance and future challenges. Fish and fisher alike pay little heed to maritime boundaries and bureaucratic distinctions. This report covers both sides of the oceanic/coastal boundary because of the I-Kiribati communities’ interest in oceanic fisheries such as tuna and their heavy dependence on its fisheries resources for food security and economic development. The report focuses on two potential pilot sites for community-based fisheries management projects: North Tarawa and Butaritari.

Download or read book Politics and the African Development Bank written by Karen A. Mingst and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African continent has long been plagued by economic problems. During the 1970s, with famines and two oil crises, the attention of the international donor community was riveted on Africa. In the 1980s international organizations, both governmental and private, have responded to the African crises. One increasingly visible organization is the African Development Bank, recently heralded by the Wall Street Journal as "the rarest of African species: a success." Founded in 1964 by African governments, its mandate was to solve African problems using African resources. But the devastation of the 1970s forced bank members to reexamine the implications of Africanicity, and in 1982 the bank courted nonregional members. In this first academic study of the ADB, Karen Mingst argues that the bank is a political institution, not the functional, economically neutral organization originally envisioned. Using bank archives and extensive interviews with ADB personnel, contractors, the economic development community, and national government officials, Mingst analyzes the changing political relationships in the ADB in three arenas: intraorganizational politics with effects on the secretariat and on policy issues, political relations with other development organizations, and hegemonic politics among politically and economically powerful state members. Particularly fascinating are her analyses of ADB techniques to influence borrowing states and her discussion of the cooperative and competitive relationship between the ADB and the World Bank. Mingst concludes by comparing the ADB with the other multilateral development banks: the Inter-American Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank. This book will interest all policymakers and scholars concerned with international organizations, economic development, and the entire future of Africa.
