Book excerpt: Merriam Press Military Monograph 82. Second Edition (January 2012). The first and only history of the Royal Canadian Air Force's little-known "Air Observation Post" squadrons: 664, 665, and 666 (AOP) Squadrons, from their creation in 1944 during World War II. Includes coverage of the Auster aircraft they flew, operational training, and their combat history. With the end of the war, these squadrons were disbanded. An AOP-trained pilot holding the rank of Major in the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery-not airforce personnel-commanded each of the three RCAF AOP squadrons. Every pilot assigned to duty in the three squadrons-664 (AOP), 665 (AOP) and 666 (AOP)-was a Canadian artillery officer (or, in a few instances, a British artillery officer) whose previous employment had been in Field, Medium, or Light Anti-Aircraft regiments, serving as a Gun Position Officer (GPO) or Forward Observation Officer (FOO), tasked with laying and firing artillery guns in support of Canadian or Allied fighting units, most often for the Infantry. The author's father a member of 665 (AOP) Squadron. Pursuing information about Canada's AOP squadrons became an obsession while hunting for the day-to-day written records and flight logs and photographs of this obscure group of wartime flyers, virtually all of the aircrew having been seconded from His Majesty's Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, and all of its riggers, fitters and instrumentation mechanics having previously serviced Lancasters, Halifaxs, Hurricanes and Spitfires while wearing the blue of the Royal Canadian Air Force. In time, a rich harvest of evidence surfaced, and is now presented in this work.Contents:Preface; Chapter 1: Wormhout Advanced Landing Ground, Dunkirk, France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-seven stories in this book serve as a graphic reminder of the selfless heroism of America's World War II Army Air Forces flyers and how necessary they were to achieve Allied victory. Wolfgang Samuel and the pilots he interviewed reveal the peril these men faced to achieve a daunting task, impossible without their bravery. And their sacrifices were stunning--American bomber crews suffered the highest casualties (KIA, MIA, POW, wounded) of all American armed services in World War II. The stories preserved in this book bear that grave danger out. A member of a heavy bomber crew in the 8th Air Force in the period from mid-1942 to spring 1944 was less likely to survive than a US Marine fighting on Iwo Jima or Okinawa. The stories in this unique book are about men who went face to face with their adversaries, who saw their buddies die, who crashed planes, and who became prisoners of war. Many later went on to become the backbone of the postwar Air Force, serving in Korea and Vietnam and during the Cold War. Young Ken Chilstrom led a flight of eight A-36 fighter bombers on a low-level foray in Italy. Only he and two others came home. Bob Hoover thought he could take on the entire German air force, but on his first mission he was shot down, nearly perished, and suffered the remainder of the war in a prisoner-of-war camp. Wolfgang Samuel's new book is all about men like Ken, Bob, and the many friends they lost, who saw World War II through to the end and gave freedom to so many others.

Book excerpt: Been inspired by his book to serve in the RAF. Here came the fighter jocks, from John Godrey to Chuck Yeager, some of whom would be as flamboyant in their writing as in their flying. Then came the bombers, massive formations of appropriately named Flying Fortresses that with their ten-man crews carried the air war into Germany. Here everyone had a story, too, from Bomb Group Commander Beirne Lay Jr. to top turret gunner John Comer. And from each crew station the story.

Often the author labored well into the night after a mission still wearing the dusty flight suit which bore witness to the events he penned.Don Harward was torn between two worlds; his loyalty to his family and to his country. Like so many other soldiers, even on leave, he can always hear the dim roar of guns, the distant thunder of war, and is always summoned towards the sound. Pacific Wings, a prestigious New Zealand-based magazine, has previously published some letters which have been praised by a growing readership, both aviator and non flyer alike, for their ability to transport the reader into the world of war. Includes superb action photographs from Dons personal collection. A twenty-five-year veteran of the US Army, he details action over Panama, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan, including Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, drawing also from his days in Army Special Ops, operating with 2-2 SAS. As a 160th SOAR pilot for a lot of his military career, his is a story that goes above and beyond the normal military lifestyle. An inspiring read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researched from original-language primary sources, this is a uniquely well-informed and multi-faceted history of the World War I air campaign of Bloody April. Researched from original German-, French-, and English-language sources, and written by an authority on both air and ground military operations, author, Dr James S Corum examines how Bloody April caused Allied forces to reassess their approach to the use of airpower. Considering well-known problems such as technology and training doctrine, but also how the artillery-aircraft combination ideally had to work in late-WW I ground offensives, Dr Corum analyses what each side got wrong and why. He describes little-known parts of the April campaigns, such as both sides' use of strategic bombing with heavy aircraft, and considers the German use of advanced high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft with oxygen and heated suits while detailing the exploits of the infamous 'Red Baron', Manfred von Richthofen. Lessons from Bloody April not only served to improve the coordination of Allied artillery and aircraft but subsequently aircraft played a much larger role in supporting ground troops in attack mode. Bloody April paved the way for the airpower revolution that, by 1918, would make the Allies masters of the sky on the Western Front.
