Book Environmental Impact Research Program Osprey Nest Platforms Section 5 1 6 US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual

Download or read book Environmental Impact Research Program Osprey Nest Platforms Section 5 1 6 US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual written by Chester O. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A management techniques report on osprey nest platforms is provided as Section 5.1.6 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The report was prepared as a guide to assist Corps biologists and resource managers in developing nesting habitat for ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) on project lands. Topcis covered for nest structures include nest site selection, management objectives, design, construction, installation, location, maintenance, personnel and costs, cautions and limitations, platforms success, and evaluation. Breeding populations of ospreys are widespread in coastal areas and some inland regions of the United States, and nesting activities at reservoirs have increased substantially in recent years. Because a lack of suitable nest sites may inhibit colonization of otherwise suitable habitat or limit population growth, properly constructed and located platforms can be a highly effective tool for osprey management. The development of artificial nest structures for ospreys is presented in this report; guidelines for construction, installation, and placement are emphasized. Detailed design specifications are provided for frame platforms, solid base platforms, ring platforms, tripod structures, and platform supports. Management goals and procedures for evaluating the success of osprey platforms are discussed.

Book Restoring the Wild Sixty Years of Rewilding Our Skies Woods and Waterways

Download or read book Restoring the Wild Sixty Years of Rewilding Our Skies Woods and Waterways written by Roy Dennis and published by William Collins. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RSPB's Book of the Season The distinctive white-tailed sea eagle was driven to extinction in Britain more than 200 years ago, but this immense predator is making a return to our skies, thanks to Roy Dennis, an ornithologist, conservationist and arguably the driving force behind the UK's reintroduction agenda. Roy was instrumental in returning the Osprey, red kite and golden eagle to the British Isles, but the road to reintroduction isn't an easy one. In what will surely be the seminal book on British reintroductions, Roy details the painstaking process of returning the Goldeneye to Scotland, one duckling at a time, the die-hard determination needed to make a dazzling success of the red kite reintroduction and the leap of faith we will all need to make to accept sharing our forests and skies with large carnivores again. He also illustrates all that we have to gain by restoring our ecosystems to balance. Filled with a lifetime's worth of stories from the front lines of conservation, Reintroduction offers an eye-opening insight into the complexities of reintroducing extinct animals to Britain. It's also an intimate portrait of these apex predators and a reminder of why we need them.

Book excerpt: A highly readable Poyser monograph on one of the most widespread raptors. The Osprey is a large, fish-eating bird of prey. Distinctively marked in deep brown and white, with a piercing yellow eye and powerful hooked bill, the Osprey snatches its prey in spectacular swoops above lakes and wetlands around the world – it is one of the most widespread of all birds. Persecuted mercilessly in Britain, it became extinct in the 1890s before returning to the famous Loch Garten in Scotland in the 1950s. The return of the bird has been slow, but reintroduction programmes elsewhere – notably at Rutland Water – have been successful, and this remarkable raptor is an increasingly common sight in our skies. This Poyser monograph is dedicated to this fine species and includes more than 150 colour photographs. The Osprey looks at the distribution, foraging ecology, migration, breeding behaviour and population dynamics of this spectacular bird, with emphasis placed on conservation efforts both in Britain and in the species' African haunts, which have been discovered only very recently thanks to advances in satellite tagging technology.
