Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Man: The Social Bases of Politics These studies in the sociology of politics are not intended pri marily as a collection of essays which happen to be written by the same person. Rather, I tried to select from my various articles those which best illustrate the contribution the sociologist can make to an understanding of democratic political systems. In so doing, it became clear that a book prepared solely from already existing articles would create difficulties for the reader because it would omit many problems and issues which should logically be discussed. I have attempted to remedy this deficiency by writing a number of essays especially for this volume and by extensively rewriting others. By these revisions, I have tried to create an inte grated book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: It is argued that the conception of social science emerging today is one that involves a synthesis of radical constructivism and critical realism. The crucial challenge facing social science is a question of its public role: growing reflexivity in society has implications for the social production of knowledge and is bringing into question the separation of expert systems from other forms of knowledge.

Book Selected Papers on Social and Economic Questions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Papers on Social and Economic Questions Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Chapman Browne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Papers on Social and Economic Questions Sir Benjamin Browne felt strongly that when the great under lying principles oi life had once been discerned, they could be applied to politics, industrial questions, and private conduct alike. These were the permanent Form, into which could be moulded the material of each day's events as they arose. This necessarily involved a certain amount of repetition in his writings, because, in discussing different questions before different listeners, or in approaching them from different standpoints, he came back again and again to these underlying principles, and drove them home by reiterated blows. Reading through his scattered writings is like listening to a sonata where three or four leading themes dominate the music, emerging repeatedly in varying keys, and giving coherence to the whole. The dates when the various papers were written must of course be borne in mind, as some of the statistics, accurate at the time, may have altered. The date of each paper is printed at the head of the page. From the historic point of view, they show the consistent evolution of his Opinions. Book Social Science and Community Action Classic Reprint

Download or read book Social Science and Community Action Classic Reprint written by Charles R. Adrian and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Science and Community Action These papers, except for my own, were presented originally as talks given in conjunction with a series of seminars sponsored by the Institute for Community Development and Services at Michigan State University. The seminars were devoted to the problem of finding ways, if they exist, for applying the accumulated relevant knowledge of the various fields of higher education to the public policy issues which confront American urban, society. It is the hope of members of the Institute that laymen, various kinds of professional practitioners in urban communities, and academic scholars will all find the ideas and the analytical processes discussed here to be helpful. In some instances, part of the material will already be familiar to the reader, at least if we do succeed in reaching the varied audience we think can benefit from the book, but there should be something worthwhile for each person who chooses to study the ideas of three out standing persons from the fields of political science, sociology and urban planning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Social Science and Political Economy, Especially for Use in Colleges, Schools, Clubs, Guilds, &C The favour of the public towards this little book was so great that certainly I should not have dared to expect it. In particular, our venerable seminaries opened their doors kindly to the work. That I am content, all will readily believe. But the reason why I am content, at least the principal reason, will not perhaps be believed by all. No matter I shall mention it just the same. The cordial welcome given to the book is a sure proof to me that the minds of Catholics, of young Levites, feel the need of quenching their thirst with the water of new ideas - those ideas of which the lamented Leo XIII. Was the indefatigable and authoritative advocate. To see souls rushing towards the light is always a consolation; much more, when we are convinced that that light is indispensably necessary for the age in which we live. Meanwhile, the Pope, who blessed this little work when it was first timidly presented to the public, has gone to Heaven. And I, while I prepare this new edition, turn my eyes towards the Chair of Peter, but see him there no more. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, social science has had numerous episodes of influential research that was found invalid when placed under rigorous scrutiny. The growing sense that many published results are potentially erroneous has made those conducting social science research more determined to ensure the underlying research is sound. Transparent and Reproducible Social Science Research is the first book to summarize and synthesize new approaches to combat false positives and non-reproducible findings in social science research, document the underlying problems in research practices, and teach a new generation of students and scholars how to overcome them. Understanding that social science research has real consequences for individuals when used by professionals in public policy, health, law enforcement, and other fields, the book crystallizes new insights, practices, and methods that help ensure greater research transparency, openness, and reproducibility. Readers are guided through well-known problems and are encouraged to work through new solutions and practices to improve the openness of their research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost twenty-five years ago, Shanto Iyengar and Donald R. Kinder first documented a series of sophisticated and innovative experiments that unobtrusively altered the order and emphasis of news stories in selected television broadcasts. Their resulting book News That Matters, now hailed as a classic by scholars of political science and public opinion alike, is here updated for the twenty-first century, with a new preface and epilogue by the authors. Backed by careful analysis of public opinion surveys, the authors show how, despite changing American politics, those issues that receive extended coverage in the national news become more important to viewers, while those that are ignored lose credibility. Moreover, those issues that are prominent in the news stream continue to loom more heavily as criteria for evaluating the president and for choosing between political candidates. “News That Matters does matter, because it demonstrates conclusively that television newscasts powerfully affect opinion. . . . All that follows, whether it supports, modifies, or challenges their conclusions, will have to begin here.”—The Public Interest

Book An Outline for the Study of Current Political Economic and Social Problems

Download or read book An Outline for the Study of Current Political Economic and Social Problems written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline for the Study of Current Political, Economic, and Social Problems: With Bibliographies Whether or not the women of Indiana will be granted the franchise in the near future, they are certain to exercise a potent influence upon the moral and social conditions, and even upon legislation and the administration of law in the State. The saying attributed to Henry Bergson that in the public view the American woman is either "a drudge or a toy" is evidently not applicable to the clubwomen of Indiana. There is among them an eager open-mindedness, a spirit of inquiry, a desire for information concerning the causes of unfavorable conditions in the social life and efficient methods of improving them. There is an awakened sense of responsibility, a consciousness of power, and a willing disposition to give their services freely. They understand that long-continued practices, deeply rooted prejudices, and strongly intrenched interests will not yield to merely emotional appeals. They know that reason based upon knowledge gives power, and they are eager to acquire such a knowledge of facts, practices, and principles as will give them the necessary strength and power. The Extension Division of Indiana University, recognizing this attitude of mind and appreciating its opportunity to serve, offers this Outline for the Study of Political, Economic, and Social Problems in the hope that it may stimulate thought and direct study along lines of practical value to the several communities and to the State at large. It is designed to furnish a program of reading extending over a period of several years. Any attempt to cover the whole field in a single year would lead only to superficiality and affectation of knowledge. Systematic reading is necessary to acquire and retain any knowledge of the social sciences that is really worth while. The habit of "skipping about" in one's reading affords neither discipline nor information. It is far better to understand thoroughly the causal relations within a certain field than to have even considerable information which is disconnected and incoherent. Even clubs devoted chiefly to the study and enjoyment of the fine arts may find a place in their programs for the consideration of the relation of their particular art to the life of the people. For the highest art can be developed in Indiana only when a considerable part of the people comes to have a high appreciation of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Social American Academy of Political and Social Science, January, 1896: Theory of Social Forces The present essay is an attempt to recast current social philosophy and to introduce into it elements which thus far have been overlooked. In our social speculations we are still dominated by eighteenth century philosophy. Even the theory Of evolution has had as yet but little influence on the social concepts and ideals of the race. Individualism seems as firmly established as ever and has on its side many of the highest scientific authorities.
