Book Mechanisms of Biohalogenation and Dehalogenation

Download or read book Mechanisms of Biohalogenation and Dehalogenation written by Dick B. Janssen and published by Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. This book was released on 1997 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback. This book is concerned with the presence, biosynthesis and breakdown of various naturally occurring organohalogens. It is biochemically oriented and the current status and future prospects of biochemical halogenation and dehalogenation reactions are discussed. In particular the book focuses on the properties and mechanisms of the different enzymes involved and there is a detailed discussion on the structure-function relationship between the various dehalogenases. Also the potential and commercial applications of the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis and the use of micro-organisms in the detoxification of soils contaminated with organohalogens are reviewed. The book is the first concise overview on enzymic mechanisms rather than detailed descriptions of the sources and analysis of the halogenated products.

Book Stratospheric Ozone Depletion and Climate Change

Download or read book Stratospheric Ozone Depletion and Climate Change written by Rolf Müller (physicien.) and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2012 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, several new concepts have emerged in the field of stratospheric ozone depletion, creating a need for a concise in-depth publication covering the ozone-climate issue. This monograph fills that void in the literature and gives detailed treatment of recent advances in the field of stratospheric ozone depletion. It puts particular emphasis on the coupling between changes in the ozone layer and atmospheric change caused by a changing climate. The book, written by leading experts in the field, brings the reader the most recent research in this area and fills the gap between advanced textbooks and assessments.

Book Naturally Produced Organohalogens

Download or read book Naturally Produced Organohalogens written by Anders Grimvall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the production and use of chlorine and all chlorinated organic compounds be halted, in view of their adverse effects on the environment and human health? Those in favour argue that certain chlorinated compounds (PCBs, DDT, CFCs, etc.) have large negative environmental effects. The use of chlorine in disinfectants leads to the production of chloroform, while bulk products (PVC) contribute to the production of chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans when they are burned. Those against argue that chlorine and many chlorinated compounds are essential in the control of human health (the prevention of disease transmitted through drinking water that has not been disinfected), and that chlorinated compounds are indispensable intermediates in many production processes, representing a vast economic value. But such discussions often ignore the fact that Nature contributes significantly to the production of chlorinated organic compounds. More than 1000 such compounds are known, and their contribution to the biogeochemical cycling of chlorine is underestimated. Chlorine is organically bound in large quantities to humic materials, and natural production mechanisms are known for low molecular weight compounds (methyl chloride, chloroform, chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans). The role of these compounds in the environment is largely unknown. Naturally-Produced Organohalogens gives a complete overview of the present state of knowledge on the subject, giving a much needed balance to the argument sketched out above.

Book Tissue Changes in Puffers Exposed to Methoxychlor and Methyl Parathion

Download or read book Tissue Changes in Puffers Exposed to Methoxychlor and Methyl Parathion written by Ronald Eisler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adult northern puffers were exposed for periods up to 45 days to either 30 parts per billion (ppb) of the organochloride insecticide methoxychlor, 20, 200 ppb of the organophosphorous insecticide methyl parathion, or to a combination of 15 ppb of methoxychlor and 10, 100 ppb of methyl parathion. These concentrations will produce approximately 5 percent mortality in 96 hours under the conditions of the experiment. Profiles were constructed on the effects of each insecticide on blood and tissue components. The visual patterns provided by these profiles suggest a means of identifying unfavorable environmental conditions before the appearence of obvious morphological or physiological changes.
