Book Thirty Years In Kashmir

Download or read book Thirty Years In Kashmir written by Arthur Neve and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stupendous natural surrounding amidst which they well have inspired sojourners in Kashmir and other Himalayan countries to produce some of the finest books of travel to be found. Among them will have to be included in future this book of Dr. Arthur Neve in which so effectively does the author reveal the wonders of the land of towering peaks and huge glaciers where he has made his home for the last thirty years.Going out to Kashmir in 1882 under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society, Dr. Neve took over the charge of Kashmir Mission Hospital at Srinagar from Dr. Edmund Downes, who was retiring, and has stayed there ever since. In his earlier chapters he gives some account of the Punjab and Kashmir in the eighties, and also of the work of the mission. He then gets to the principle motif of the book-the exploring tours and mountaineering expeditions to which he has devoted his spare time. Nanga Parbat, Nun Kun, and many other Himalayan giants, are within hail of Srinagar, and before he has finished with the book the reader will find he has acquired the next best thing to a first-hand knowledge of this magnificent country. Dr. Neve has also a great deal that is interested to tell about the people of various races and religions who inhabit the valleys, and from whom his medical help gained him a warm welcome at all time.

Book Kashmir in Sickness and in Health

Download or read book Kashmir in Sickness and in Health written by Gulzar Mufti and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the reader down unexplored and uncomfortable avenues of beautiful and enchanting but troubled and war-riven Kashmir Valley. It analyses the ups and downs of Kashmirs ailing political health since the beginning of Dogra rule more than 150 years ago, until the present time. The author has pulled off the task of juxtaposing the history of Kashmir, with a history of its medical and educational development, interweaving his own experiences of growing up in Srinagar the capital of Kashmir, to illuminate the readership with specific aspects of his story. The book gives an insight into various aspects of British involvement in Kashmir, describes the pioneering work of the UK missionaries in its social, educational and healthcare development, and points to the reciprocal contribution of the Kashmiris to present day British society. It describes the impact of political events in the international arena on Kashmir, particularly after the partition of British India. It traces the development of Kashmiri political thought process and examines the roles of various personalities from within and outside Kashmir who shaped the painful destiny of this land and its people.

Book The Missionary and the Maharajas

Download or read book The Missionary and the Maharajas written by Hugh Tyndale-Biscoe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cecil Tyndale-Biscoe polarised opinion in early 20th India by his unconventional methods of educating Kashmiris and, through them, changing the social order of a society steeped in old superstitions. He was a man of contradictions: a Christian and a boxer, a missionary who made very few converts, a staunch supporter of British imperialism and a friend of Kashmir's political reformers. He made enemies of the Hindu Establishment, who described him as 'exceedingly a bad man and one too much fond of cricket,' but earned the respect of two successive Hindu Maharajas, as well as the Muslim leader, who succeeded them. He was 27 when he became the Principal of the Church Missionary Society's school in Kashmir in 1890 and he left as India gained independence in 1947. His vision was of a school in action, vigorously involved in the affairs and problems of the city of Srinagar, to support the weak and to fight corruption wherever it occurred. Under his leadership the masters and boys were engaged in fighting fires in the city, saving people from drowning, taking hospital patients for outings on the lakes, helping women and removing the ban on the remarriage of young widows. His avowed purpose was to make his students into honest, fearless leaders, who would serve their beloved country of Kashmir. The book begins with the medieval condition of Kashmir in the nineteenth century; describes the development of his unusual approach to education; explores the many challenges he had to overcome, including his chronic bad health, his difficulties with the CMS and the opposition of the Hindu establishment and State Government; and contrasts this with the speedy and enthusiastic acceptance by his young Kashmiri teachers and students of what he was offering and how together they transformed their society and prepared Kashmir for independence.
