Download or read book The Unconfessed Sin Arthur Dimmesdale s Guilt and Suffering written by John Kirsch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 3,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: While one might argue that Hester Prynne is the one who, due to the public shaming by the community, suffers most in Nathanial Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter, I claim that on the basis of Reformed theology, which marks the foundation of Puritan doctrine, the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale proves to be the predominantly suffering protagonist in the novel. In order to validate my thesis, I will structure the term paper as follows: In the first section, I will briefly outline the spiritual background of seventeenth-century Puritanism in America and elaborate its main doctrines concerning the sin of adultery and the doctrines of repentance and confession. This will be done by means of the number one authority of the Puritans at that time, namely the King James Bible. In this context, I am going to consult the Institutes of the Christian Religion by the French Reformer John Calvin, which function as another basis of Puritan doctrine. In the second section, I will analyze Dimmesdale’s bad conscience and how as a result, his ministry as a preacher tortures him. The third section will deal with the influence Hester Prynne’s husband, Roger Chillingworth, has on Dimmesdale’s suffering, while the fourth section will be concisely devoted to Hester Prynne’s suffering. I will conclude this paper by summarizing the arguments throughout the different sections supporting my thesis statement.

Book Psychoanalytic Readings of Hawthorne s Romances

Download or read book Psychoanalytic Readings of Hawthorne s Romances written by David B. Diamond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering innovative, psychoanalytic readings of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s mature novels, this volume expertly applies Freudian theory to present new insights into the psychology of Hawthorne’s characters and their fates. By critically examining scenes in which protagonists confront past traumas, Diamond underscores the transformative potential which Hawthorne attributes to confrontations with the unconscious. Psychoanalytic narrative technique is used to illuminate psychological crises of the protagonists in The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun, showing the transformations they undergo to be central to our understanding of the trajectory and resolution of Hawthorne’s romances. The text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in applied psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic technique, and Freud in particular. Since its conclusions challenge many currently held critical views, this volume is especially relevant to those interested in interdisciplinary literary studies, Hawthorne studies, 19th century literature and romanticism.

Book Redemption As A Literary Icon

Download or read book Redemption As A Literary Icon written by Dr. Fr. Binoj Mathew, O.SS.T. and published by Shineeks Publishers. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concept of Redemption in the Selected Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Graham Greene: A Comparative Perspective in the Light of the Catholic Theme of Redemption as Elucidated by John deMatha and the ‘Trinitarians’ is an English Literature book that analyzes the selected works of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Graham Greene. The intended objective is to demonstrate how the Catholic theme of redemption influence these authors, the primary source for which is the Holy Bible. A critical and interpretative framework for the thematic analysis of literary texts focused on the idea of redemption has been created based on the above findings. Applying the framework on these authors suggests that life is a journey from egoism to glorification, which is also a journey to self-emptying. It is a gradual transformation of the ‘human self’ to the ‘divine self’. The book’s conclusion consolidates the findings of the analysis and makes a comparative evaluation of the contrasting readings of the novels of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Graham Greene. It also gives new levels of fiction readings with the theme of redemption. The framework structure created in chapter IV to analyze the various nuances of redemption in English Literature will serve as a tool to explore further works.
