Book excerpt: Francisco de Paula Brito is a biography of a merchant, printer, bookseller, and publisher who lived in Rio de Janeiro from his birth in 1809 until his death in 1861. That period was key to the history of Brazil, because it coincided with the relocation of the Portuguese Court from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro (1808); the dawning of Brazilian Independence (1822) and the formation of the nation-state; the development of the press and of Brazilian literature; the expansion and elimination of the trans-Atlantic slave trade; and the growth of Rio de Janeiro’s population and the coffee economy. Nevertheless, although it covers five generations of Paula Brito’s family—men and women who left slavery in the eighteenth century—this book focuses on its protagonist’s activities between the 1830s and 1850s. During that period, Francisco de Paula Brito became one of the central figures in the cultural and political scene in the Imperial capital, particularly through his work as a publisher. Paula Brito’s success was due in part to his ability to forge solid alliances with the Empire’s ruling elite—among them leading politicians responsible for the unification of the vast Brazilian territory and for the maintenance of slavery and the illegal trafficking of Africans. Consequently, through the books and newspapers he published, Francisco de Paula Brito became part of a much larger project.

Book excerpt: Sometime around 1190, King Alfonso VIII of Castile granted a royal charter to the community of Cuenca, a Castilian frontier town recently recaptured from the Muslims and resettled by Christians. The royal charter was in the form of a law code, or fuero. Fueros, which evolved from short lists of exceptions to standing royal directives into much more extensive commentaries on legal matters, were used as an incentive to Christian settlement on the frontier. Reflecting the complexities of administering a town that still had large Muslim and Jewish populations, the fuero or code of Cuenca was meant to assure the permanence of Christian conquest and settlement. James Powers provides the first translation into English of this notable historical document. The Code of Cuenca is of great importance to legal historians, particularly as a comparison to contemporary English and other European law texts. Because there is no similar urban compilation anywhere else in twelfth-century Europe that contains significant descriptions of everyday life in a medieval frontier town, the code will serve as a primary source for scholars and students of medieval Iberian and western European political, economic, and social history.

Book excerpt: European exploration and conquest expanded exponentially in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and as the horizons of imperial experience grew more distant, strategies designed to convey the act of witnessing came to be a key source of textual authority. From the relación to the captivity narrative, the Hispanic imperial project relied heavily on the first-person authority of genres whose authenticity undergirded the ideological armature of national consolidation, expansion, and conquest. At the same time, increasing pressures for religious conformity in Spain, as across Europe, required subjects to bare themselves before external authorities in intimate confessions of their faith. Emerging from this charged context, the unreliable voice of the pícaro poses a rhetorical challenge to the authority of the witness, destabilizing the possibility of trustworthy representation precisely because of his or her intimate involvement in the narrative. In Knowing Fictions, Barbara Fuchs seeks at once to rethink the category of the picaresque while firmly centering it once more in the early modern Hispanic world from which it emerged. Venturing beyond the traditional picaresque canon, Fuchs traces Mediterranean itineraries of diaspora, captivity, and imperial rivalry in a corpus of texts that employ picaresque conventions to contest narrative authority. By engaging the picaresque not just as a genre with more or less strictly defined boundaries, but as a set of literary strategies that interrogate the mechanisms of truth-telling itself, Fuchs shows how self-consciously fictional picaresque texts effectively encouraged readers to adopt a critical stance toward the truth claims implicit in the forms of authoritative discourse proliferating in Imperial Spain.

However, in Beyond Carnival, the first sweeping cultural history of male homosexuality in Brazil, James Green shatters these exotic myths and replaces them with a complex picture of the social obstacles that confront Brazilian homosexuals. Ranging from the late nineteenth century to the rise of a politicized gay and lesbian rights movement in the 1970s, Green's study focuses on male homosexual subcultures in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. He uncovers the stories of men coping with arrests and street violence, dealing with family restrictions, and resisting both a hostile medical profession and moralizing influences of the Church. Book excerpt: La tipografía y las artes gráficas en general han sido consideradas como una especie de santa hermandad a la que aparentemente solo pertenecían los elegidos. Cómo conseguían los tipógrafos esos bellos resultados en forma de textos o ilustraciones, a veces policromas, sobre un soporte, generalmente papel, es otro de los misterios que han rodeado a la tipografía tradicional, la que avanzó pasito a paso a través de los siglos hasta llegar a nosotros. También los sacerdotes del ritual, es decir, los viejos tipógrafos, los impresores y hasta los encuadernadores aparecían a la vista de muchos como personajes sagrados, mantenedores del rito, trasmisores de la cultura y del saber y realizadores de la maravilla que es todo lo impreso y todo lo encuadernado. Han pasado más de cinco siglos y medio desde la invención de la imprenta y las viejas técnicas gráficas, los sacerdotes de la diosa tipografía y toda su parafernalia han desaparecido de la noche a la mañana como por arte de ensalmo, sin darnos cuenta y sin que sepamos qué ha sido de ellos. Sin embargo, su maravilloso producto, el impreso y el libro, siguen ahí, como si nada hubiera cambiado, como si Gutenberg no hubiera muerto, como si los santones tipógrafos aún siguieran componiendo textos, imprimiéndolos y encuadernándolos, todo ello en el más absoluto de los secretos. En realidad, lo que ha sucedido es que las técnicas se han quintaesenciado, se han perfeccionado hasta extremos que hace solo cien años nadie hubiera podido imaginar. La composición dio un paso de gigante gracias a la linotipia y la monotipia, pero también estas desaparecieron empujadas por la fotocomposición, técnica que ya anunciaba la revolución que en las artes gráficas en general, y en la tipografía en particular, iba a desarrollarse con la aplicación de la informática, no solo a la composición y compaginación (la autoedición), sino a todos los campos de las artes gráficas. Este es el origen de la nueva tipografía y de los nuevos tipógrafos, esos seres informatizados que han sustituido a los viejos tipógrafos y ahora se dedican a construir el impreso y el libro a partir de bases distintas, pero con resultados idénticos. Sin embargo, hay razones para preguntarse si los nuevos tipógrafos están a la altura de sus ilustres antecesores. Con sus herramientas maravillosas, sus todopoderosos programas informáticos, sus veloces ordenadores, ¿mantienen la calidad, la belleza, la estética y hasta la ética de la vieja tipografía? Este Diccionario de edición, tipografía y artes gráficas pretende tender un puente entre la vieja y la nueva tipografía, entre los santones tipográficos y los tipógrafos de la nueva era, de la digitalización. A ello contribuyen sus 480 páginas, 224 figuras (de las cuales 54 son ejemplos de tipos de letras), 6300 entradas (aproximadamente) y 5200 correspondencias francés/inglés-español (también aproximadamente).
